Interesting.  I didn't know that South Beach was "high-protein" (which can
aggravate gout).   I know that on Atkins, we don't eat any more meat than on
a normal diet ; it's high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb.

Sorry to hear that you're planning  on "eating whatever the hell you want"
and "dying from a heart attack at 50."  Of course it's your option; no one
can put food in your mouth but you.  Good luck an enjoy those last few
years.

You can do something about the gout and still continue with your diet
plan.

Not if you don't want to be.

Take along some info, from the referenced posts on the subject.  There
is some good advice from gout sufferers who also lowcarb.

Randy, Last Sunday on NBC they had a dieter challenge where the guy who did
Atkins developed gout- It didn't say what he corrected (maybe processed
meat) but the atkins team corrected his diet and he went on to lose over 100
lbs.  Don't give up- we need you around, figure out what  triggered it and
keep going.  www.atkins.com there is a link to email a professional there.

Excessive amounts of pork triggers gout in many individuals, usually is
a genetic trait as well.

Pork is not one of the main triggers.  More common triggers are:

1) nuts
2) shellfish
3) alcoholic beverages
4) aspirin

I have seen warnings from the so-called 'medical' profession that a
high-fat, high-protein diet will cause gout.  I have not found that to
be the case.

If you have ever had a gout attack, then you become much more likely
to have another, and the trigger can be almost *any* change in diet,
exercise, or sleep habits.

Most common treatment for gout is allopurinol.  Allopurinol is usually
well-tolerated, and has the advantage of being very inexpensive (using
my IAB membership, I get mine for $17.50/year).  I have been able to
stop the onset of a gout attack by drinking massive quantities of
water, temporarily increasing my allopurinol dosage (with the approval
of my doctor) and switching to a more basic diet (mostly eggs, fresh
meats, fruits & veggies).  Emphasis on MASSIVE quantities of water, in
excess of a gallon/day.

I agree.

I would rather die of a heart attack early than live long with a bunch of

Not a lot of people expire from carbon dioxide poisoning.  Maybe CO would be
a painless way to go though.  ...

Well, that isn't a very good attitude to take.
If you have a strong mind, the body will follow you know.

AFAIK, and a south beach person will need to confirm this for me - that diet
is controlled protein, not necessarily high protein. You may require less
protein than other people your build, but that is no reason to just throw up
your hands and yell I QUIT!

usually, a regularly active type person does not want to go over 20-30%
total calories from protein, but on these LC diets, it can be difficult.

I would suggest you try the zone diet, it is specially formulated to keep
your levels of fat, protein, and carbs to a set level, perhaps you can have
more luck with that.

Of course, you can always lose your health, develop other problems like
osteoporosis, diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, low energy,
possibly sleep apnea, and general irritation from your diet.
This is your call my friend.

I trust you will make the choice you feel is right for you, I hope it is the
correct choice.

southbeach isn't a high protein diet. it's more balanced.  it emphasizes
"good" fats (monounsaturated), lean proteins, high fiber and whole grain
carbs, and avoids refined carbs, "bad" fats, and anything that has a high
glycemic index.   besides, as i understand it, to completely control gout by
diet alone, you'd have to eat so little protein that it would be unhealthy,
so diet is no longer the recommended way to treat it.  you should be fine as
long as you avoid organ meats and shellfish.

>whole grain
>carbs

There is no essential difference between carbs from so-called 'whole'
grains and carbs from sugar.  Not to mention that the so-called
'whole' grain crap available at the grocery store is not really
'whole' anything; it's just the same old crap with a little husk
added.

There is this difference:
Whole grains are more complex, and are lower on the glycemic index. You will
"feel" refined white grains (like white flour) faster than you will "feel"
whole grains.
As a result, some diets (because remember, Atkins is not the only diet out
there) have you eat whole grains, because some diets are all about balancing
your blood glucose levels, which takes away your cravings for junk food.

Gout is one of those things that can be triggered by 1) a loss of
weight, 2) a gain of weight, 3) an increase in physical activity, 4) a
decrease in physical activity, 5) taking aspirin, 6) eating
nuts/shellfish/etc, or 7) damned near any change in diet, exercise, or
sleeping habits.  I seriously doubt that the "South Beach Diet" is the
specific cause, even though the SBD is not a particularly good diet.

If you can tolerate allopurinol, that is usually the best
preventative.  Then check out a more reasonable diet, such as
Cordain's Paleo Diet, Audette's NeanderThin, or Eades Protein Power.
You can get the Eades book, carb-counter pamphlet, and wall chart all
for under $10 (including shipping) at http://www.SuzyQShop.com
