I'm sure this question has been posted before, but I seem not to be able to
find any answers to it. I'm using Outlook Express to read these news
postings, and it only shows so many. I googled this list to find more
answers, but with little success. So, I'm going to outright ask. I beg
your forgiveness if it's been discussed before.
Anyway, I've been low-carbing since 9/23/03. I've lost 30 pounds (I'd have
lost more by now, but the holidays were not fair to me...). However, I've
also been keeping tabs on my measurements. Alas, they do not appear to be
changing. I'm measuring my waist, chest, forearm, and thigh. I'm making
sure that my measurements are taken from as close to the same location in
those areas as I can get. But I'm still showing very small amounts of loss
in this area. 30 pounds, and no inches lost? What's the deal, here?
I try not to add any extra salt to my diet. I know that can cause extra
water retention, and I'm not exactly careful about what I eat that might
already have added salts. Could this be the problem?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Give it more time. If you keep losing weight, you will have to lose inches
after a while.

That's what I keep telling myself. I am exercising and staying pretty good
with the low-carb (I have a free meal every once in a great while). I'm not
discouraged by this, just curious. I'm thinking I need to do some serious
stomach crunches...

I lose fat around my waist last. That's how it is for most guys.
If you like doing stomach crunches, that's fine, but it probably won't make
you lose inches around your waist any faster.

You mentioned water retention: that can be a problem. But you also
can't control where the fat comes off: your belly might be the last
thing touched, while your face and butt are actually losing fat, for
example.
I comfort myself with whichever measurement is showing an encouraging
change, and stick with it. The parts that *I* wish were skinnier,
eventually will be.

Personal observations indicate that an inch around the navel is about
six pounds, for me. YMMV, and almost certainly will. But I can lose
weight for a while without the stomach being affected--the fat has
lots of places to hide.

Len.

I appreciate the encouragement. I know that my results so far are nothing
to sneeze at. I figure I have about another 85 pounds to go, though. I'm
just wondering why I'm not seeing the results save for on my scale.
My pants to fit more loose, though, I'll say that. SOMEthing's happening...

try exercising.

Actually, I do. I walk 30 minutes every other day (except Sundays) and do
weight training on the other days. I've been wanting to move up to running
or riding my bike, but I have a problem knee that keeps me from moving any
faster than a brisk walk (I'm not sure if it will affect riding a bike,
though. Haven't tested it yet). My doctor says it may be arthritis, which
would suck. But hopefully I'll find out soon enough.
