cooked too much--a lesson learned

Jean B. - 11 Jan 2004 18:40 GMT This week has been miserably cold. That plus some online conversations led me to try a few baking experiments. I baked pumpkin bread pudding, "cornbread", and peanut butter cookies. Oh yes, almost forgot the spice cookies that were like sawdust when you chewed them. Anyway, it occurred to me that it was rather stupid to make all this stuff at once, that eating the results would pose a problem. Even though it was relatively low carb, the carbs and the calories would add up--and it was too much like my old unhealthy WOE. Yep, sure enough, after a day in which I consumed all these things, even the PB cookies, which somehow managed not to taste like PB, even though that's almost all that was in them, I found myself just mindlessly throwing food down my gullet last night. Yes, that was low carb too, but it was still food that I needn't have eaten. I threw the cookies in the trash and am going to put the "cornbread" in the freezer. I'll try eating the pumpkin bread pudding for breakfast and see what effect that has. I now resolve to make only one thing at a time and not to have such stuff around constantly. Ack!!!!

I think it's just a subconscious effort to feel better because of the bitter cold - comfort food for body and soul while entombed in the deep freeze!
I did something similar last night - I bought some of those "Sans Sucre" mousse mixes, never had them before. The urge came on and I made a packet of the creamcheese flavor. I let it get cold and figured I'd have a taste...ok, two tastes...um...ok, maybe I'll have one portion which is 1/2 a cup...needless to say, the whole bowl of 2 cups went down the pie hole as they say elsewhere. I made it with the Hoods "dairy beverage" but there are 8 carbs per serving in the mix, so there goes 32 carbs. But only 200 calories, woohoo! Well, not the worst thing in the world, but I have to watch that.
I made some more this afternoon (the key lime pie flavor) and this time I put some ground almonds in the bottom of cupcake papers and then spooned the mixture on top. I got 8 servings that way. By the way, these "Sans Sucre" things are very tasty! I can handle it better in the individual servings. I guess the thing for you to do would be to slice, dice and apportion everything and then put it in the freezer out of temptation's way when the urge to be Betty Crocker for a night comes on again. 8 ) Kalish

It is just too dangerous having the stuff out, tempting me. I though I was beyond that, but I obviously am not.
I do wonder about the relationship between the season and weather and eating. I know people tend to put on weight over the winter, but is that because they eat more or get less exercise or both? I dunno.
I THINK I have seen those Sans Sucre mixes at Shaw's. I'll have to look the next time I am there.

My mother gave me some sugar-free candies from Shaws before I started low- carbing. I think there were about 10-15 chocolates in the bag and I ate them all. Later, I was sitting in an office chair, bent over to pick something up off the floor - and CRAPPED MY PANTS!!! OMG!!! Color ME surprised (not to mention horrified and disgusted)! At the time I assumed this was the infamous "anal leakage" attributed to eating products containing Olestra. Having been on low- carb for a while and after reading this newsgroup for 7 months, I've since become convinced it was the sugar alcohols in the chocolates that did it -- they might not even have CONTAINED Olestra. In any case, I have NO plans to eat any sugar- free candies that I don't make MYSELF (other than Smints)! (Fortunately, I was sitting in an office chair at HOME at the time)

I got really painful cramps one night and then realized I had sampled a couple of little cookies containing maltitol. At the time, I thought there was something really wrong with me, so that was scary. I gather you can build up your tolerance for such things. The only incentive to do so would be that I gather the use of maltitol in baked goods and candies yields a much better product. But then I shouldn't be chowing down on that stuff anyway.

That's extremely scary!!!!! I had read some accounts like that but always thought they were exaggerated. I guess not. Maybe I don't want to try that SF honey made of maltitol.

The Sans Sucre mousse is sweetened with aspartame, if that's an issue. It's not for me, I try to stick to Splenda, but here and there I've used products that use something other than Splenda, like the sugar-free Tang. Kalish

I'll have to compare the price. I've only seen them at the dingy Shaw's in Woburn (on the Winchester line, near Toys R Us). There's a little diabetic/LC section in front of one of the pillars that juts out into the aisle. Otherwise that store was not very promising, but I have not looked there for a while.

Much of my life revolved around it. Now my obsession is different.... I don't think I will ever have a totally utilitarian view of food though. That sounds pretty boring.

Jenny - 11 Jan 2004 20:46 GMT Jean,
Just go outside for an hour in a light jacket. You'll burn off all those extra calories real fast. And then tomorrow you can shovel snow. <g>

And then tomorrow you can shovel snow. <g> I actually was looking forward to having more snow to shovel this winter. Preferably a few small snows per week--not constant huge snows, but I'm sure I can dictate that!
