Hello,

I am getting leg muscle aches in particular at night while sleeping. I
take one Potassium tablet per day and drink tons of water. Any thoughts on
how I might resolve this problem absent aspirin/tylenol?

Also, does the Potassium tablet make one retain water?

-Cheers

I have been taking only one daily--I think I will increase these and see
what happens.

One potassium tablet provides a microscopic portion of the
potassium that you need.  Better to get it from food.  Avocado is
a particularly good source of potassium, with 1 c pureed providing
1166 mg.  (One cup provided 877 mg.)  That according to

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/list_nut.pl

Or go to

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR16/wtrank/wt_rank.html

and click to see potassium.

BTW, can someone tell me why, given the fact that the first shows
potassium in avocados as stated above, the chart does not show
avocado in that range?

FWIW, I made this same complaint to my pro-LC doctor, and he told me
to add Calcium-Magnesium supplements.  They are 1000mg of CA and 500mg
of MG in one tablet.  He also said I was getting plenty of Potassium
from Morton's Lite Salt, which I use everyday.  I asked if there were
any other things I was missing on LC, and he said these three are
really it.
This has completely cured my nighttime leg cramps.

Interesting.  I have been careful about my calcium for years.  I'm
not sure of my magnesium consumption though.  My leg cramps went
away when I started paying more attention to my potassium
consumption.

Yep, the magic 3 for muscle cramps: Calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

I get serious muscle cramps if  I am not getting enough Calcium.  I always
take calcium supplements to help.

More often than not, leg cramps are fixed with calcium, arm cramps are
fixed with potassium.  While "more often than not" is crappy statistics,
it's worth trying the most common fix first.

So go get some cal/mag or cal/mag/zinc tablets.  Many are 333 mg each,
take 3 per day.  I take 1 in the evening and 2 in the morning to spread
them out for better absorbtion.

Pitiful potassium tablets have 99 mg.  It takes a dozen of them to count.
use lite salt.  A teaspoon gives a gram, and you can sprinkle it on 3
meals to get up to that levels.  Caveat, potassium interacts with certain
diuretic BP pills and that's why tablets are so tiny.

> Also, does the Potassium tablet make one retain water?

Does it really matter?  Water isn't fat.  So no matter how much effort
you put into fighting water, it will never contribute to losing a gram
of stored fat.  You may be able to fight water for a couple of weeks,
but over a few months fighting water is one of the ultimate self
inflicted frustrations out there.
