I've read the Atkins book and had been on 8 days of a cheat free
induction. I have a quick question which some may think is stupid/anal
retentive, but I want to try to go as "by the book" as possible. I
have about 20lbs total to lose. I have lost around 4/5 already. I want
to go into OWL right after the 2 weeks of induction because I have no
problem loosing the rest slowly and growing into this WOE. Here is my
dilemma. Yesteday I picked up some diet rite after reading it was ok
for induction. My mother poured some for me and made a drink for her
self (Royal Crown and Coke). Well, like a dummy I grabbed the wrong
glass and took a big swig of her drink. I could not believe it. I've
been done with sugar cravings and everything. Here is my question.
Technically, am I supposed to start induction back at day 1 because of
this? Or should I add an extra day to the 14? I'm confused. Any advise
would be appreciated.

well this is not a stupid question
but i think you should repost with a different subject title and you should get a better response
i would like to know the answer too :)

Personally, I'd call it an "oops" and just get back with the program.
Accidents happen - don't let it throw you. You're off to a great start!

Don't be such a literalist! And I mean that kindly.
I'm assuming that you didn't chug the rest of the drink, so the carb
count of your swig is minimal and undoubtedly still well within your
20 grams for the day. Forget it. Pretend it never happened and just
keep going like you were.

I would just continue on as if this had never happened. If you want,
there would be no harm in adding an extra day of induction. I don't
think there is any hard and fast rule about this. Also, a single swig
of a sugar-containing pop won't have much of an effect.

If you feel better adding an extra day to induction then by allk means
do so but I think you are fine. Just drink an extra glass of water
today to flush out the sugar and pray you get no carb cravings from
the little mix up.
Good luck to you.

you should relax. you took ONE DRINK of something you shouldn't
have...big deal. as long as the rest of your intake for the day was
according to plan, you have nothing to worry about.

Technically you should reset the clock to day one. On the one hand
there are a lot worse thnigs in the world than spending an extra week
on Induction to get it right. On the other hand exactly how technical
you want to get depends on your own judgement. Lots take a few running
starts, but does an honest mistake when you actually knew better call
for it?

Because Induction's rules are that if it is not on the lips it does
not pass your lips. Because Induction is deliberately strict. Because
Induction is about a lot more than carbs counts. Induction is about
breaking old habits and old addictions, like addictions to sugar and
alcohol. And because the word "technically" is in the request and in
my response, and the word "technically" carries its own caveats.
Atkins starts off deliberately strict and restrictive and then after
Induction is becomes progressively less so until you reach a custom
level based on the reactions of your own body. But during Induction
it remains strict.
But amount of sucess on Atkins is correlated with how well folks follow
the process. If you want to be technically lock-step on every detail,
it is part unhealthy obsession and part drive for the best and fastest
possible results. Doing a clean Induction sets an excellent foundation
and since Induction is 14 days, a clean Induction happens by resetting
the clock. It's a hard-core "technical" approach that works great. A
very few people really *need* to be hard-core technical. The vast
majority don't need to be hard-core to anywhere near that extent. But
being hard-core technical at the start never hurts anyone.
The reason it's "technically" and the reason folks judged that it is
not a big deal is it was a small breach of the strict rules and more
importantly it wasn't deliberate (baring the spooky invasion of the
evil addicted subconscious like some SF movie). It being a discussion
of what should "technically" be done doesn't mean I'm pounding my fists
that it's the only thing to do this time, nor that Ryan or I expect to
do that exact lock-step technical thing this time given the context.
But being hard-core technical at the start sure isn't going to hurt Ryan
if he feels like doing it.
And besides, what's the big deal about taking longer to get through
Induction? There's debate about folks wanting to stay on Induction
longer than 6 months! Folks have to be pushed to get OFF Induction.
Induction is easy, Induction is safe for 6 months, extending Induction
just to check off a box that you acheived the technical well in excess
of what was practically needed is fine if Ryan wants to be an
overacheiver.
Remember Ryan wasn't lamenting <oh my, I'm doomed, all is wasted, I'll
never succeed, I smelled a peanut>. He doesn't need strokes of that
sort. He wanted to know both the least-impact practical answer, which
he got from several posters, and also the hard-core overacheiver
"technical" answer which I gave. He's doing fine where he is in the
plan. He can pick practical versus technical on his own.

This happened to me over a year ago. It was with Hansen's soda... I bought
the regular instead of the sugar-free. Anyhow, I just gave it to my better
half, kept going and forgot about the goof. Accidents happen and it won't
hurt you. I did feel pretty dumb afterward, though. :)

It sounds like you only drank a swallow or two. I don't have any
non-diet pop available, but I would guess that a swallow is maybe one
or two grams of carbs, which if yu are steadily losing is no great
shakes.
Best whooshes,
