I started doing the atkins diet last monday, and I had a couple of
questions about it. Their web site nor the book was not very informative
about the answers.
1) I love my diet coke. What adverse effects would I have to drinking diet
coke on the diet? I normally drink 1-2 cans per day.
2) When it says 1-2 cups of greens, I actually own a really good food
scale, and as far as I know 1 cup = 8 oz. 8 oz of lettace is enough to
fill an entire plate! When the book says a cup, do they mean 8 oz!???
3) I love chicken.. how safe are grocery store rotisarry chicken? They call
it "Whole BBQ Chicken" As far as I know they do not put anything on the
skin, is it safe to assume so??
Thanks!

Some folks have an insulin reaction to sweeteners, others don't. If you don't
do well on your diet, cut them out to see if it helps.

Dry measure, not liquid measure. A cup of lettuce is a very small amount,
actually, especially if it's not shredded.

No. You have to read the wrapper or ask the store. Some are basted internally
with stuff it may be better not to eat.

Rots your bones.

Eat all the green leafy veggies you want. No need to measure at all.
Regardless of what Atkins has to say on the subject, not all carbs are
the same, and it's doubtful that you can eat enough green leafy
veggies to impact your weight loss anyway. I generally eat two ample
salads a day, mostly to avoid constipation.

If it's got sauce on it, it's probably sugared. If it's just grilled
without sauce, it's probably ok. My experience with BBQ sauce is that
it definitely has enough sugar to adversely affect me.

YMMV, but most of us just tried to limit the consumption of diet
cokes while on Atkins.

The best way to measure it is to shred it up in small pieces and
stuff it in a cup. I think that is what Atkins means when he says a
cup of lettuce. That's why they say you can have 3 cups of salad. I
know, it is stupid when you have a good scale, but not many people
have a good scale. Spinach is another matter. You know that if you
shred a cup of spinach and boil it, then it makes about a half cup.
Atkins says count it as a cup.
After induction, you can start using the 20+ gram thing.

You can usually find out what it has on/in it by asking/reading.
Most of the chickens, turkeys and hams have about 25% water added
which is usually a broth of some sort. ASK.

The UK version of the book says (as far as I recall) that you can eat
something like 200-300g (7-10oz) of salad vegetables - though I have
an idea it's an odder figure than that, something like 280-340g (8-12
oz). As the website says 2-3 cups, I've assumed that it's
approximately 100g (4 oz) to a cup of green vegetables. So when I
make salad I always start with 100g of green leaves and move on from
there adding things like cucumber, tomatoes and pine nuts (I'm out of
induction) until it looks like a tasty salad then top off with a low
carb dressing. I count all the carbs as I'm adding them - by weight -
because I'm sad that way. (Obviously all imperial to metric
conversions are approximate!)
I do know we had a discussion on this group about cups vs.
grams/ounces not too long ago and we came to the conclusion (if this
group can be said to come to any conclusion) that there isn't anything
which will tell you definitively how much of something by weight will
equal a cup. This is because a cup is a measure of volume, and a
gram/ounce is a measure of weight - they are quite different things.
A cup of oats (for example) will weigh much less than a cup of rice,
and I think the 1 cup = about 8 oz applies to flour, which obviously
will weigh differently for its volume than green veg.

The best thing to do is weigh the serving that you want to eat and then
enter it into Fit Day. You will then be able to tell how many carbs are in
the lettuce. Using "a cup" for things like lettuce is too arbitrary!

While Atkins was very negative on Nutrasweet(from a health
perspective-not dieting-wise), I think it depends upon if it affects
your weight loss. You might want to wait until you see how much weight
you are steadily losing each week then introduce the sodas. If the
weight loss is affected or the soda triggers cravings/binges--you know
it is something to stay away from.

You are confusing volume with weight. A cup is volume. Ounce can be
weight OR volume, but are different things. 8 fluid ounces(1 cup) DOES
NOT equal 8 weight ounces(1/2 pound).

If it is BBQ they must put something on the skin. Otherwise it would
simply be rotisserie or roasted.

Mr Kiriliuk, how you been? Still with Big Blue?? Still into the
"hobby"
I find the rotisserie chickens from Costco really good. Give them a
try.
