I find I save money doing Atkins.  I do not enjoy fish/seafood.  I eat
cheap cuts of steak marinated, ground beef, pork chop or chicken all
which i get for under two dollars a pound.  With the veggies if it is
over  a dollar fifty a pound I go without.  Eggs under 2 bucks for 18.
Igo with out the bacon and use the ground beef or a fattier cut of
pork for omlettes.  It is great to use lo salt no nitrates. You make
due with the resources you have i find it very easy to stay on a
budget and eat quality food gl luck all....

I agree, if you learn how to shop, watch for sales, and buy in bulk, it can
be economical. Oh, by the way, a lot of grocery stores mark down meat at
the end of the day if it's gonna be thrown out, you can get even _good_
steaks cheaper then.  But I think how good a steak tastes has more to do
with how it's prepared than what cut it is, anyway.

I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

That is so good to hear. I am in the process of making the first
grocery list. Going shopping for me and my sons this coming Friday.
Letting them eat all the junk up in the house in the meantime. Then
been cleaning the fridge and the cabinets out. Also taking stock of
what I need.

Everyone's experiences are different - I am sure it depends upon what folks
were eating before - but I suspect I am also spending less on food.  We are
taking more trips to the supermarket and buying a lot more, but the converse
is that we are not eating out or eating take-out up to four nights a weeks.
Also, we are eating less (this is not so much a magic effect of low-carb as
a conscious effort to limit portion sizes), so where we used to buy 3/4 lb.
of meat (say) and get one dinner out of it for the two of us, we now buy 1
lb. of meat and get two dinners out of it.  And when we do get take out -
such as shish kebab and salad from the wonderful Lebanese place around the
corner - the meals stretch further too, a dinner and a lunch or even two
dinners out of what used to just be one dinner.

Unfortunately, while my job was pretty quiet in December, I've gotten busy
again which means I won't be home to cook as much.  I'll be able to scrounge
a low-carb dinner from the office cafeteria, but my husband will probably
start eating more takeout again.  :-(

Low Carb is much more expensive.  How can you compare the price of steak to
a 25 pound sack of rice for $5 and say LC is inexpensive?

But most people don't eat just rice and pasta. They ALSO eat steak and
chicken and fish ... and Big Macs and Mallomars and Chee-Tohs and
Chunky Monkey.

Don't just look at a price comparison of steak to rice. Look at the
overall expenditure on food once you eliminate bagels and cookies and
boxed breakfast cereals and mocha/muffin breaks and fast food lunches.
I agree with the other poster -- I spend LESS on food now than I did
before, and I eat quite well.

The way I look at it is that if I were willing (or at least desperate enough) to
pay for some monitored weight loss program where I would have to buy miniscule
portions of food from them at an exhorbitant price and/or pay for each visit to
their establishment or, worse, bariatric surgery, any extra costs associated with
doing the MUCH less stressful and much MORE satisfying Atkins on my own is MORE
than worth the price.

Because I don't compare the price of a bag of rice with the price of a
steak. Compare it to ground beef. Or frozen ground turkey which you
can buy for $1.50 a tube.

Not everyone who is on a LC lifestyle is chewing down prime rib and
sirloin tips every day for breakfast lunch and dinner. We're still
eating chicken, and ground beef, and canned tuna.

Where I really saved money is in not buying the bread, crackers,
cookies, and packaged snacks that we used to eat so much of. I used to
buy a lot of vegetables. Now I buy more. The cost hasn't gone up much
at all. I know, because neither has my husband's paycheck and we've
been doing this for over a year now.

<nodnodnod>  I find it much cheaper to low-carb than to eat all the crap I
was eating.  I eat at home more often (in fact, almost always) and that
saves big bucks.  I don't buy a 7-ounce bag of chips for nearly 4 bucks.
For 4 bucks, I *can* buy a good steak.

I have found the same thing for myself, however I still have to buy
certain things for the boys.

If I add up the cost of the "snacks and other foods not eaten" because
my appetite is now under control LC ends up much cheaper (for me, at
least)
