Burger Giant Joins Low-Carb March
Salads, Web Information Part Of Trend

POSTED: 12:35 p.m. EST January 13, 2004 UPDATED: 1:29 p.m. EST January 13,
2004 DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hoping that low carb may translate to high
profit, Burger King is offering Whopper hamburgers minus the bread. And
the fast-food chain plans to introduce salads featuring steak, chicken and
shrimp.

Consumers watching their calories and carbohydrates will also be able to
order Whopper meals that allow substitutions of french fries with salads
and bottled water for soft drinks.

The nation's No. 2 burger chain is suggesting franchises charge the same
for burgers whether including buns. Introduction of low-carb fare follows
a wave of similar moves by other restaurants. CKE Restaurants' Hardee's
and Carl's Jr. chains feature burgers wrapped in lettuce.

McDonald's restaurants in New York City have posters and brochures
advising customers how they can lower their carb intake by modifying what
they order. Wendy's has similar nutritional information on the web.

Burger King also is debuting a website, www.have-it-your-way.com, with
information on carbohydrates, calories and fat content in its offerings.

Burger King is owned by a group of investor firms, including Texas Pacific
Group, Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners.

so how come they're charging the same even without the bun.  that's a
little un-cool.  it just doesn't seem right, i mean why not 20 cents
less or something.

it's amazing how restaurants aren't responding to this.  when servers
give me trouble i just don't go back.  at work, i help decide where
the lunch 'herd' goes, this is anywhere between 3 and 6 people.  and a
server can't work with me and give me steamed vegetables instead of
fries, i'm not ever going back.

eventually they'll figure it out i guess.  i'll stop ranting now.

when we order our burger without the bun people will get extra tomatoes, onions
lettuce pickles etc.
So I guess thats why????

It's simple...

With the bun, it costs BK actually LESS because the bun and wrapper cost
them about 10 cents (maybe)....

With the plastic container and fork & knife, it will cost them MORE - about
15-20 cents....

Thats the easy reason why!

Exactly!
The paper cost is probably higher.  Remember when you would ask a fast food
joint for water and they would charge 5 cents for the cup?

I was thinking this is the case.  The plastic case IS reusable (I
think it is the one they use for the baked potato), and you do get a
plastic fork and knife.  But, considering they don't put catsup and
mayo on (need to request packets yourself), it may be easier for them
to make, so it ends up a wash.

I did try one of these, by the way (the whopper), and it was pretty
good.  Not a first request, but still ok.  I put one packet of catsup
and mayo on.  They also do similar for the chicken whopper.
