Anyone else who drinks bottled water try drinking from the tap again.
Wow I didn't realize how bad tap water tastes.  I'm going to have to
start bringing some bottled water to work because This Water Sucks!

Water filters can help quite a bit.  I reuse water bottles with the sports
tops, and fill them up at home.  Saves money.  But you have to wash the
bottle every day! Seriously! I mean it.

I have my dog and cat spoiled and they won't drink tap water anymore either!
When ever they here the water cooler go "glug-glug" they come runnin'.
Personally, I can't remember the last time I drank tap water - too many
chemicals!

We have a reverse osmosis filter on our fridge, for all our drinking,
cooking, and ice needs.  Compared to that, bottled water sucks.

I save bottled water money by filling tap water into gallon jugs and
refrigerating them.  I have 5 gallons that I rotate.  At any given day I am
drinking water that had been in the refrigerator for about a week.  I find
that the taste is good, even though water straight from the tap tastes icky.

Why?  I'm not sure, but I suspect that gasses, like chlorine, leave the
water during the week in the refrigerator.

I save many dollars....

I find just the opposite.  I have never liked bottled water.  It seems
to have some kind of extra unpleasant taste to it.  I will actively seek
out tap water, rather than drink bottled water.  It seems kind of
ridiculous to me to pay for something that comes freely out of my tap.
To each his/her own, though, I guess.

More accurately, something that comes freely out of someone else's
tap.  Bottled water is just someone else's tap water - it's not
processed or anything.

Try buying a bottle of distilled water (look in the pharmacy section)
and compare your water to that.  Distilled water should have no taste
whatsoever.
Dull Pecle - 14 Jan 2004 03:09 GMT
Distilled water tastes terrible. It tastes like rain water. The reason
distilled water and rain water taste bad is because neither have any
minerals in it.  I get the gallons of spring water at Wal-Mart. It is
really good like water from a good well.

Lack of minerals won't make it taste bad.  Minerals add taste, which
you get used to.  The lack of taste makes the water seem "empty" or
devoid of taste, which most people interpret as "tastes bad".  But
chemically, pure water should trigger no taste buds or olfactory
senses at all.  Doesn't mean people will like it though ;-)

Oh, and rain often has lots of interesting things in it.  After all,
it's filtering the dust out of the atmosphere.
Dull Pecle - 14 Jan 2004 04:11 GMT
It may not have any taste but it still tastes terrible.

YMMV
I like distilled best.  It tastes sweet to me.

I like distilled, too.  Spring water tastes bland to me.  I don't DO tap water.

heh.  i'm spoiled.  i work for a company that manufactures water
purification equipment.  i have great water to drink all day long while
i'm at work!
PJx - 14 Jan 2004 11:07 GMT
I bought a couple of whole house water filters and put under my sink
and then ran a line from that to my fridge which has another expensive
filter.  So I got triple filtered water that tastes fine.

Tap water has fluoride which you need.

This is totally false.  You do not need fluoride.  In fact, it is a poison.
It is good for teeth if you have a problem.  I don't drink that crap and
have not had a cavity for over 20 years.

We have great tap water here in Hamilton Ontario in the winter. Clear
and icy cold right from the tap with absolutely no taste or smell.

Tapwater here in the warmer weather is *another* story.  I have been
actually put off from drinking it by the smell alone.  It is a mixture
of chlorine and algae.  Absolutely gross so I swittch to bottled water
then for the most part. unless it smells okay.

In the summer I am always doing the sniff test.

Depends on where you live.  Here in Detroit we have wonderful tap water.

Really!  It must have really improved since the late 50s and 60s
when I visited my grandparents.  It was just awful!

Well, I didn't move here until 1979.   I'm not sure when they built the
present system.

I wonder if it is/was the same throughout the city?  (My
grandparents loved on Ashton Rd.)  Anyway, we had to bring Fizzies
(ugh) and other things to try to cover up the taste.  Ugh.  You
know it must have been pretty bad if I am remembering it from
decades ago!!!!

Well, now the Detroit system supplies water to most of the suburbs as well
as the city so maybe it was a later development.  Here's a summary of the
history:
http://www.dwsd.org/history/water_brief.htm

Here's a few paragraphs from the end.

The last major technological change came in 1961, when the coal-powered,
steam-fed, highlift pumps at Water Works Park were electrified.

The Southwest Water Treatment Plant became operational in 1964. It increased
Detroit's total system capacity to more than one billion gallons per day.
Construction was controlled by the Wayne County Road Commission, after which
the plant was transferred to the Department in April through a
lease-purchase agreement.

In 1966, the BOWC acted on its long-held ambition of establishing a new
water intake in Lake Huron. The Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant began
pumping water in 1974, increasing system capacity to more than 1.5 billion
gallons per day. To deal with the increasing demands of a growing
population, the plant was designed with expansion in mind.

Currently, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department pumps an average of 675
million gallons per day to more than four million people in 126 communities
within its service area.

Due to DWSD's pioneering efforts and progressive thinking, citizens of
southeastern Michigan will continue to enjoy an economical, abundant supply
of the highest quality drinking water in the nation.

Well, I'll certainly have to check that out if I ever get there
again--and there is genealogical work I could do there.  Thanks!

My tap water tastes better than any bottled water I've ever had. Of
course, my tap comes directly from my well, which comes directly from
the aquifer some 700 ft. below the surface. Love our water at home -
like drinking out of a mountain stream (without the giardia and other
nasty micro organism risk). In fact, just down the street from us is a
spring that someone has installed a pipe. People park there and fill
up their gallon containers with MY WATER!!! The nerve! :).
