My husband got the go ahead from his doc yesterday to start the Atkins diet.
He asked the doc if I (a T2 diabetic in good control, low (123) cholestrol,
blood panel all within normal range) could go on this diet. The doc said
with my numbers he could recommend it and thought it would be beneficial and
suggested that I stop one of my oral meds and try the diet for two weeks. I
have yet to speak to my own doc.
Any feedback would be welcome.
TIA

LC will help you if you're a T2. However, I would not just stop your meds
on your own. I suggest you talk to your doc, get your blood work done, read
the book, and get your HbA1c done, before starting. Oh, monitor your BG
regularly.
With LC & exercise (losing 120 lbs), I'm off meds completely for my T2. My
last HbA1c was 4.8.
Even though you could very well do this on your own (I did), I don't
recommend it. It is much better to have your healthcare team working with
you.

Yes, I just passed the first anniversary of my diagnosis, and I've been
low-carbing for a year. My A1c is 5.2, and I rarely stray above 130
post-prandially. I've dropped over 30 lbs (I don't have an exact figure
because I don't own a scale), and I feel great.
As for stopping oral meds, despite the fact that I maintain close to
normal numbers with low-carbing, I deliberately sought out metformin,
because insulin resistance can be doing a number on my heart even when I
keep my BG in good control. I'm just barely up to therapeutic dose on the
metformin (long story about why so long), and I haven't noticed a lot of
help with BG from it (I do "test" myself with yummy carbs from time to
time), but I think it's just started making the weight loss pick up in
speed.
There are a lot of type 2s here. Welcome!

Thanks, Priscilla.
I'm on Metformin and Glipizide -- the doc recommended I drop the G'zide for
the two week trial period. My numbers are good 90-100 daily, wish my A1c
was as good as yours....6.5 end of Dec.

Yes, that makes perfect sense.

Don't worry -- you'll get there!

Hello Mrs. H I am also a type 2 diabetic and the low carb WOE has been
very benificial to me and my diabets. Before I started I was on 2 type
meds 2 times a day and still had problems keeping below 200.
Now, into this WOE several months my BG stays within 85-110 with no meds
at all.

I'm type II diabetic and that's what brought me here. I've
been lowcarbing which allows me to control my blood glucose
through diet and exercise alone -- no meds! I hope it works
as well for you.

There are lots of people with diabetes doing a lower carb diet on
alt.support.diabetes too, though there are always other people flaming them
for it. But you can get good technical advice on that group about how to
use low carb to control diabetes and address the various issues that come
up.

I'm a T2, diagnosed just over 2 years ago now. LC is a GREAT way to
eat for diabetics.
I'd recommend you seriously consider getting hold of a copy of Dr
Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. He is himself a T1 Diabetic, Physician
and PhD (in Engineering) who follows a LC diet and guides his patients
in managing their diabetes using a LC approach.
His website is http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/ where he has
(among other things) some sample chapters from his book.

LC 5 1/2 years and plan to be there for LIFE.
