Update: Soy Problems

Folks,

Over the past two months I'd started eating a daily serving of a low carb
breakfast cereal high in soy proteins.  Well, during the past couple weeks I
started hotflashing like crazy, even though I was taking my usual (very low)
dose of estrogen.

Reading some postings here and following up on a study they pointed to, it
struck me that perhaps the soy in the cereal was somehow blocking my
estrogen receptors.  I cut out the cereal this week  while not changing my
estrogen dosing regimen and lo and behold, by last night the hotflashing had
stopped.  My blood sugar is looking a lot better too--when my estrogen drops
my blood sugar rises.

Why should you care?  Because a lot of the new "low carb" products are jam
packed full of soy which may be having subtle effects on your own hormone
receptors.  Both men and women's bodies use estrogen for many functions, not
all of them having to do with female stuff.

So too much soy upsetting natural hormone balances might be another thing
that could, perhaps, contribute to stalls and/or subtle emotional changes.

It's worth a thought, anyway!

Sigh.  You always have such relevant information, Jenny.  I have
started hot-flashing like mad after a respite from same.  I wonder
if it is because of the Soy Slender and the little bit of other
soy-based foods I am eating now.  Worth an experiment, esp. now
that I can use Carb-Counting dairy beverage instead of the Soy
Slender.

Jean,

I'll be interested in whether cutting the soy helps. It took about a week
for me to see a difference. I'm still not sure that the soy was the
issue--in fact I hope it isn't because I love the cereal for breakfast. I'll
challenge test it in another couple weeks to check it out.

I'll do an experiment this week if my Carb-Counting "milk" is
still good.  Otherwise, either I will have to use all half & half
or wait another week.  (Obviously, I will also cut out all the
other sources of soy.  I have been trying not to consume that
much, but I still do consume some.)  I had been thinking that my
hot flashes were over, and then I started having really bad ones.

FWIW, I've kept using the Hood's Carb Counting for much longer than
the 10 days it recommends on the carton - maybe even 3 weeks...but I
don't drink it straight (eeeww...), I use it in tea and whatever else
calls for a milk-like liquid.          Kalish

That's timely advice.  I was just about to throw out the rest of
mine.  Think I'll use it instead.
