Okay, a coworker of mine was talking about how he used to do Atkins.
I asked him how long he was on it, and he said 6 weeks. (doesn't seem like
very long at all to me)
Anyhow, he said that his doctor told him that he needed to stop with the
Atkins immediately. The doctor had done a test and claimed that he had
caused severe liver damage and that it was because of the Atkins.
This doesn't even sound right to me. Mostly the part that sounds
unbelievable is the idea that somebody can damage their liver in 6 weeks.
Isn't alcohol one of the most liver-damaging substances that humans consume?
And doesn't the liver put up with years of alcohol abuse before showing
signs of damage?
If anybody has more information on this, please let me know.

An overdose of tylenol can do it pretty fast.

Usually, but livers are funny things. In any case, I seriously doubt that
it was the diet.
> If anybody has more information on this, please let me know.
Suggest to him that his doctor should document this for the literature.

INformation sounds vague ("severe liver damage") and doesn't really
explian what is wrong. Doctors are ordinary people, not the superhuman
geniuses that people make them out to be. As such they mistakenly
allow prejudices and personal opinions affect the way they treat
patients.
My brother's doctor wanted to put him on cholesterol medication the
moment he heard he was doing atkins (actual test results were unseen).
Another friends mother went to the doctor with a series of symptoms.
The doctor said it was all in her head caused by stress. Her husband
started showing the same exact symptoms, the wife told him the
doctor's diagnosis. The husband went in to the same doctor and the
doctor ordered an assortment of tests including a CAT scan and found
out what was wrong. The doctor (a guy) disregarded the patient's own
concern because she was a woman. Same symptoms on a guy gets thousands
of dollars in tests. The mother changed doctors immediately and choose
a woman doctor to treat her instead.
Point is doctors will ignore facts and go with their own opinions.

Well, not all doctors do that. But a lot of them do the
same thing with heart disease and women.

No, nobody does everything the same way, but every doctor is a person
who will let their personal opinions and hang-ups affect therit
professional judgement. Unfortunately with doctors it affects other
people's health. Male-female biases are abundant. Even guys who seems
one way in front of a woman act differently when no women are around.
I seem to recall a post here where a woman said her doctor said to her
"your fat because you eat like a pig, you look like a pig cause your
are a pig" No doctor would EVER dare say that to a man out of fear of
his head being put through a plate glass window. But obviously
treating a female patient like a piece of sh.t who deserved no respect
was okey-dokey.
In general I think women are better served by female doctors.

There's no way a low carb diet could damage a healthy liver. There have
been quite a few rigorous medical studies done this year which have laid to
rest the suspicions that the diet was harmful. They were only guesses and
are not borne out by any research.

I think he has his organs mixed up. If one stays on induction long enough,
way over 6 weeks, you could damage your kidneys. But I think you have to be
on induction for over a year for it to happen or something like that.

I've heard this one and it made no sense. Years ago someone said that
the higher protein would damage the kidneys. I had to laugh at this-it
was a women which makes more sense why she belieeved this. The average
guy spends the ages of 14 through 25 eating protein, fat and carbs.
The typical guy isn't eating salad and veggies. My own brothers won't
eat but 1 or 2 vegetables and eat salad less than 3 times a year. They
don't like fish or pork, so they basically eat red meat, chicken &
turkey & carbs ... for the last 40 years. The idea that they should
all have failing kidneys cause they were on it for a few months is
ridiculous.

If high protein / low carb diets easily caused kidney damage then every
Gold's gym would have a dialysis center right next door. Serious weight
lifters have long since proven that the kidney yarn is B.S.

Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution,
explains in great, technical detail just exactly why low carbing will
improve your kidney's health rather than damage it assuming you aren't in
late stage kidney disease and how it is carbohydrates that cause diabetic
kidney damage (by attaching glucose to the proteins so that they become big,
sticky "glycated proteins") , not the dietary protein itself.
The explanation is well worth reading by anyone who worries about this.

I so argee. All i was pointing out was that something taken to an extreme
can be dangerous. Induction for a prolonged peroid (over a year, compared to
two weeks that atkin's recommeneds) can be danderous to the kidneys as well
as the over all body health. Not the diet itself. I think following atkins
is a very safe diet, just don't be an extremist about it. I personally think
everything in moderation is a good approach to life.

Killing your liver with a diet? Maybe if you had a couple of Tylenol with a
glass of wine every night for dessert....
