hi
i'm on day 13 of the south beach diet and i have only lost 2 lbs. i
haven't cheated at all and i'm very disapointed that i havent lost
more. i have been eating between 1200-1400 calories a day. im a
vegetarian, so it's lots of eggs, some low-fat cheese, tofu, salads,
celery, soy protein products. i tried cutting back on the cheese after
day 5 as i've read that can slow down weight loss for some. i weigh
142 now, started at 144, i'm 5'8, female, 35 yro. i would think just
by cutting out bagels and wine i would have lost 5 lbs!!
i have also been doing 25 mins of cardio and light work-outs like yoga
and pilates classes 4 + days a week....

i have a friend who is on atkins who suggetsed i get the ketostix. i
did, and i'm in ketosis. isn't it highly unusual that i am not
dropping more quickly??

meanwhile my husband did 5 days of slightly watching his carbs, but
still ate bread etc, and he lost 8 lbs!!!!

on the plus side, my energy levels are better, and my mood was better
the first week, but now i'm getting upset because the weight isn't
coming off! i would be happy if i could lose 10 additonal lbs total.

any suggestions as to what i might be doing wrong or why the weight
won't come off would be much appreciated. could it be the soy
products? i.e. veggie bacon, sausage, boca burgers? i think it would
be impossible for me to cut out vegetables - but could that be it?

I think it's because your weight is already in a healthy range for your
height.  How much do you want to lose anyway?  People who are close to
their body's healthy weight will NOT lose as quickly as very heavy people,
no matter what diet they are on.  You've lost 1 pound per week, which is a
good, healthy, normal rate of loss for someone who's already very close to
goal.  In fact, it's faster than most who are as small as you.

i would like to lose 10 additonal pounds. i'm not hugely overweight,
but i would look and feel a lot better at 132. most of my excess
weight is in my belly.
so the sbd claims of 8-13 lbs in the first two weeks doesn't apply to
everyone? i think most healthy diets allow for a loss of 2-3 lbs a
week, and the reason i chose south beach is because it promised a much
more dramatic loss. i really expected to lose at least 5. i'm gonna
keep on plugging though...

If your diet was not high-carb or particularly bad before, starting SBD is
not so much of a change.

In our case (my SO and me), we both had followed relatively good diets but
were both moderately overweight, due to a gradual increase over time of
bread, pasta, and beer. After the initial two weeks of South Beach, we both
lost within the expected range (just under 10 lbs. in my case). We are not
vegetarian, but prefer fish and chicken to other meats. We did not follow
the recipes in the book, but did completely cut out bread, rice, potatoes,
carrots, other starchy foods, fruits, sweets, and alcohol. Now we are
gradually introducing foods like brown rice (once a day), fruits, wine, etc.

Hope this helps,

I don't think 8-13 pounds in two weeks can apply to anyone who has only 10
pounds to lose.  Many folks here who are close to or at goal will tell you
that the last 10 pounds are the hardest and can take a long time of
conscientious calorie counting and exercise to shed.  Not only that, but
those 10 pounds will leap back on as soon as the vigilance is relaxed.

I have always heard that you can't really do the low carb thing as a
vegetarian.  It would be awfully hard to do induction on it.  Too much
cheese can keep some people from losing.  Soy protein is higher in carbs
than you can really have on the first phase of the SB diet.  You CAN do it,
but I'm sure it's going to be harder for you to get into ketosis and take
you longer to lose.

ok, so i understand that maybe my loss isn't dramatic because i dont
have that much to lose.
but i AM in ketosis. doesn't that mean i should be losing more, and
faster?

also, since i haven't lost much during phase 1, can i move to phase 2?
or should i remain in phase 1 until i've seen a significant decrease?

I think so, yes. You are already at a very healthy weight (going by
BMI). Indeed, if you'd go some pounds lower than your goal of 132
pounds, you'd be underweight (unless you have a very slight build).
As others said, the fact that the diet is not that dramatic a change
from your usual diet also factors in.

Another thing may be that it may be going on your TOM (time of month),
and some of that weight your are not losing may just be retained
water.

>but i AM in ketosis. doesn't that mean i should be losing more, and
>faster?

But your body doesn't *have* that much to lose, and my not like it.
People who have 60 or more pounds to lose will have a loss rate that
high.
You didn't write if you have just started with the exercise you do
(wow, way to go, by the way), or if you have been doing it for a
while. Maybe you would achieve a better body image if you did some
weight lifting, or waited a bit until the exercise can have a bigger
effect on your body? If you have only started to exercise now, it
maybe that you are losing fat but building muscle, and since muscles
weigh more than fat, you are not losing much weight (but inches).

>also, since i haven't lost much during phase 1, can i move to phase 2?
>or should i remain in phase 1 until i've seen a significant decrease?

I think I would stay on phase 1 a bit longer, if you like what you
eat, and give the exercise a bit more time to form your body.

Good luck!

hey, thanks for your advice
i stared exercising, just cardio, a week before i started the south beach diet.
i'm going to do yoga, pilates and light weights as much as possible.
yeah, i think maybe the diet isn't that different from what i nomally eat - but
i used to eat at least one white flour bagel everyday, sometimes more! and lots
of popcorn, tortilla chips. i was never a big rice or pasta eater, and sugar
was never my thing. so maybe my body just needs to adjust, and then the weight
will come off (i hope). i'll give it 2 more weeks.
i came back from my honeymoon last month, after eating tons for 2 weeks
straight and i'm at about the same weight i am now on the sbd. if i not gonna
LOSE weight, i may as well eat what i wish!

You may achieve the body you want with just the exercise.  Especially
weight training.  Since your scale weight is healthy for your height, you
may build muscle and lose fat without the number on the scale changing,
while losing _inches_.  Weight training for women does _not_ make them
bulky, it will make you more compact, sleeker, and firmer.  Muscle is
denser than fat, so the more muscle you have the smaller you will be, even
at the same weight, and bodies with more muscle burn more calories even at
rest, so you can maintain your weight at a higher caloric level.

I'm on day 10 of SBD and have only lost 2.5 pounds.  I'm 5'4" and started at
130 now at 127.5 as of today.  I've only begun to lose those pounds in the
last couple of days.  The less you have to lose, the harder it is.  I have
been in Ketosis everyday from light pink to almost purple as of yesterday.
From what I've read, just because the strip shows pink and therefore "In
Ketosis" it could still mean that you are only burning the fat that you
comsumed that day and not the fat on your butt!   I'm going to stick it out
and keep trying but I do believe that these low-carb diets and "RAPID"
weight loss are more for heavier people. I think it will still work, it will
just take us longer.  My husband is on it as well and wanted to lose 15
pounds.  He's lost 6 and has stalled a bit.  Let's keep trying lak and see
what happens.
