heartburn--MY update

Something Jenny said, combined with the fact that I just learned
that my HMO is raising the price on my Prevacid and the fact that
I have felt really good, led to my skipping my Prevacid yesterday
morning.  That was a BIG mistake!  Ack!  VERY bad heartburn last
night, and I wanted to wait to take my Prevacid, because I usually
take it first thing in the morning, and it is a 24-hour drug.
Maybe I would have fared better if I had not eaten chili and a
small amount of chocolate.  And possibly I forgot to take the
Prevacid the previous day.  I had skipped one dose before with no
ill effects and found that encouraging.  Oh well.

Jean,

No. The problem you ran into is that some of the heartburn drugs cause
"rebound" heartburn when you stop taking them. If you can wait it out a
couple days, you may be fine.

Yet another sneaky way that the drug companies keep you buying their
expensive drugs.

I've not experienced that before, thank goodness.  We shall see I
guess.

If you stomach empties in two hours (with heartburn it seems like much
longer) why couldn't you take the Prevacid then?    I don't know how
Prevacid works, that's why I'm asking.

Chili and chocolate :)

I don't quite know how to answer this, but I think my problem is
more the overproduction of acid than full stomach--although the
latter is a problem with my hiatal hernia.  I don't remember
whether I researched the best time to take the drug or I just
decided to take it when I take my supplements.  I'll have to check
on that.

Thanks.  I guess I can see some rationale for that.

I see ppl saying LC cured their heartburn.
I never had it before LC (with the exception of
pregnancy) what am I doing wrong? NOT drinking enough?

LC cured my heartburn. I use to wake up in the middle of the night thinking I
was going to DIE! I don't know how many times I fell back asleep sitting up
because I couldn't lay down.

just an aside here ... being a life long heartburn victim ... 1 tsp of
baking soda in a small glass of water will eliminate heartburn in 2 minutes
and one burp! The reason? Baking soda is a mild alkaline which counter-acts
the acid in the stomach ... balancing the pH levels and alleviating
heartburn.

That's a good reminder that sometimes the old fashioned tried and
trued remedies are the best.

However, for many of us with gerd and middle of the night acid reflux,
you know, the kind where the acid boils up and asparates into your
lungs, waking you choking and gasping for breath, baking soda (alka
seltzer) works fine for immediate relief, but once it clears the
stomach the acid production and the cycle starts over again.

I recently had a hernia repair surgery: the nurse gave me a shot-glass
sized drink of a very bitter lemony liquid that was supposed to
instantly neutralize stomach acid and last the length of the surgery.
It'd be very cool to have that stuff available on the drugstore shelf.

I'm afraid it would make me barf.  (I guess that would purge me of
my stomach contents though.)

Scary, isn't it?  I always wonder what would happen if I didn't
wake up.  (My dad died of aspiration pneumonia.)

I wonder what it was?

My husband tried to get me to take it. I could never get it down. It was
grosser than the heartburn! I would be fine standing up though, it only hit me
when I was laying down. So I spent more than one night sleeping an a
not-very-reclined recliner.

I probably should have resorted to that the other night.  That
would have been a first.

I've never understood how other people coul drink that and feel better.  I've
done it exactly twice in my life.  Once when I was much younger.  I got
INCREDIBLY painful and dramatic diarrhea.  FF about 10 years.  I have stomach
trouble and my boyfriend tries to convince me to take backing soda in water.  I
explain my terrible reaction.  He INSISTS that I do it and that it was just a
fluke.  I finally give in and have diarrhea so bad that I have to lay on the
floor to keep from passing out.  He complains about the smell and steps over me
(but he and his devious campaign to emotionally wound me is another story (and I
sincerely hope he's rotting in prison somewhere -- ahem)).  I will NEVER
willingly take baking soda and water again -- EVER!
