But now I may have Gestational Diabetes!  That sucks!

Sure goes to show you how eating too many carbs can really screw with you.

I failed the 1 Hour Glucose Test (156) and am scheduled to have the 3 Hour
Test on Wednesday.

Surely is upsetting...........EVIL CARBS!!!

You and your baby will be fine. Trust.

Carol Ann,

156 mg/dl is not good, but it is also not terribly bad.  It merely suggests
that the reason you have had such a tough time with your weight in the past
is that you have had abnormal blood sugar.  FWIW, if you'd gotten 156 mg/dl
on a one hour test when you weren't pregnant, most family doctors would tell
you, you were "normal" and wait ten years until you already had heart
disease etc before telling you that you had diabetes.

So in a wierd way, this is GOOD.  Because now when you deliver that baby,
you're going to get your  act together, monitor your blood sugar for the
rest of your life, keep your carbs to where your blood sugar is normal and
avoid slipping into complacency. As a result you will NEVER get diabetic
complications.
Also, you can ask your doctor for helpful drugs like metformin or Precose
that can help you lose weight once you have your babies now that you know
you have documented blood sugar abnormalities.  The difficulty you have had
with your diet in the past is probably due to the blood sugar swings you
were having back then.

As far as your baby goes, she will be just fine. Every child of a
gestational pregnancy I've known has been. At worst she'll be a bit bigger
at birth, but that doesn't mean she'll be fat when she's older.  Both my
gestational diabetes babies weighed in at around 9 lbs at birth. One was 18
inches long and the other 21.5 inches long. The tall one grew up willowy and
thin and currently earns a good income modeling. The short one is the
muscular and huge football player who does have to work to keep his body fat
under control.  In short, the kids' genes seem to be more important than my
diabetes in how they turned out.

Hang in there!!!!!

I'll take the 3 Hour Glucose Test and just wait and see what happens.  I
can't wait to get my cravings back under control.  I've let myself go
terribly.

So far, at 31 weeks I'm 25lbs heavier.  I have 9 - 10 more weeks to go!

Wahoo!!

Carol Ann,

Thanks for restoring the links!

Twenty five pounds is a decent sized weight gain for a diabetic pregnancy.
You are doing great. I gained 50 lbs with each of mine, most of it in the
first 6 months.  It all came off during the next year. Do try to nurse if
you can. Visit with the LaLeche league ladies now, before you have your
baby, to get some very good support and to meet some other ladies whose
babies will be the same age as yours.

It is quite possible to work full time and nurse. I did and it really helps
get that weight off, especially if you pump and store extra. The LaLeche
league ladies can help you get past any difficulties. I can't say enough for
the ones I met in both Texas (1st baby) and Connecticut (2nd).

Bring a book. That test is horrible!

I still can't see why pregnant women are told they can't cut carbs. I've tried
and tried to come up with what a potato or bread contributes to a developing
fetus (besides gestational diabetes), and can't figure it out! FWIW, I had a
highish 1-hour too, but my 4 hour (I had to do 4, not 3!) came out fine.

Hello,

That stinks, but keep in mind that it's possible to eat a high carb
diet and never come up against diabetes.  You needed to pick your
parents better and/or have lived a healthier lifestyle.  I made the
same mistakes you did.  :-(  The carbs aren't to blame.
And yes, I know you can't pick your parents.  That's the main reason
diabetes sucks.  By the time many Type IIs know they're more sensitive
to carbs than other people it's usually too late to do anything but
try to stop the disease's progression.
Sending good thoughts for the three of you.

Take care,
Carmen

Thank you, Carmen.  I am to blame for "overdoing the carbs" the past year.
I just simply lost control.

I am sending you and your husband healthy vibes!!!

Kicking yourself won't do any good - especially in light of the big
role genetics plays.  Exercise and propereating for your situation
during the pregnancy is something you can control so try and focus all
your energy on that.

> I am sending you and your husband healthy vibes!!!

Thank you.  Physically he seems quite healthy still, and mentally
he's holding up pretty well.  He gets his stitches out today and the
hand looks good.  :-)  Hope he gets to keep it.

Take care,
Carmen

So, how did this go?  Have you received the results yet?

> Surely is upsetting...........EVIL CARBS!!!

Yes, it is.  Fortunately your doctor was on the ball and
caught it, so its impact can be lessened.  Yay!  :)

In the meantime: good energy coming your way.

April.
