Getting a bit discouraged

Hey all,

I've been lurking and poking my head in here and there.  Hopefully you all
won't find this too whiney:

I've been heeding all advice and read and re-read Atkin's book and am trying
to follow as closely as possible.  I've been using fitday to count carbs and
calories.  I've been excercising and weight training since the beginning of
the year.  (5-6 days/wk aerobics and 3-4 days/wk weights).  My calorie
intake is between 1800 and 2000 and my carbs are between 20-40.

The discouraging part is that I seem to be adding a little weight.  2 pounds
in two weeks.  I know that when one builds muscle and loses fat the net
effect at the scale can be zero, but let's face it, I've got alot of fat!!
I was hoping to see the pounds start dropping off.

Oh yeah, the tape measure isn't encouraging either.  I've lost maybe 1/2 in,
everywhere (waist, bust, hips).  I never did have the initial whoosh or the
drastic weight loss in the first few weeks that many do.

whaddya think??

P.S. JC>>>> I have been excercising more and eating less!!

Unfortunately, you may have to drop your calories further still. Try 1600 -
1800 for a few weeks and see what happens. It looks like you're doing
everything else right, so start thinking of calories in terms of progressive
recalibration.

Two weeks is not long enough to establish a trend but seems as though
at under 2000 calories a day you would be losing a little faster.

Sometimes hidden calories will add up quickly.  Milk in coffee,
ketchup, oil in salad dressing, portion size estimates etc. etc. can
add another 500 calories a day easily without being noticed.

You could reduce your calorie intake a little further to see what
happens.  If you start feeling the winter chills a little more than
usual and exercise doesn't bring your metabolism back up you may need
to add some calories back again.

How old are you?  Females tend to put on water weight at certain
times of the month.

I am 35.  And honestly, I forgot about Aunt Flo coming to town.  She's due
in about a week.  You may be on to something . . . .  (I hope so)

Don't be discouraged!  We are all losing at different paces.
Faster is not always better--although it is rather encouraging!

BINGO!!!!!!!!

There are a LOT of women here who don't lose from ovulation to
menstruation.  I always tend to gain between 5 and 10 kg (11 to 22 lb)
every month during that 2 weeks - and if I stick to my Plan it all
comes off again.  For most women (I'm long-term stalled so don't base
your expectations on me) they will also drop a few pounds lower than
they were the previous month.

This kind of monthly cycling is why a lot of women here don't even
consider weighing in the second half of the cycle.

Be patient, and in about 10 days time I'll bet you're calling a
'whoosh' - a spontaneous drop of more pounds than you'd expected.

I was thinking the same thing as Jean!  I bet that's it.  Track your weight
along with your cycle, and see if there's any trend there.

I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

It may just be a cyclical thing.  Rather than comparing today's weight to
yesterday's, or this week's weight to last week's, try comparing any given
day's weight to your weight four weeks before that date.  Even if it
bounces up and down within a given month, the total month-to-month trend
may be downward.

Yup. I second this.  I weigh myself every time I go to the gym, because I'm
incurably curious and I can't help myself, but only the official monthly
weigh-ins "count."

I weigh myself much too frequently too.  I have at least learned
not to put much weight <g> on the day-to-day variations in it.  At
first, that drove me crazy.  I'd think I was stalling or gaining,
but now I think it was all just normal.

Yeah, for me (I go 3 days a week to Curves) my unofficial weigh-ins are
just a way to keep myself motivated to go the gym, because my scale at home
is the cheapest one from Wal-mart and it's virtually useless.  I don't
write down my weight on those days, or attach any emotional significance to
it at all.  Now, IF I went in there and it said I'd gained 5 or more pounds
since the last time, which would be in a period of 2 or 3 days, which has
never happened, I still wouldn't freak out but you can bet I'd start eating
lighter.  The most it's ever gone up from the last time was one pound, and
then the next time that pound was gone again.  I have not yet had a stall,
I must have been really nice to someone in a previous life.

Right or wrong, I still weigh myself virtually every day. It helps me
to track my cycles, and dang, I just love those boosts when the scale
goes down :) I am also learning patience and perseverence when the
thing just won't move! Generally, for accountability, I use
Wednesday's weight, once a week. I guess I was an evil child because
stalls are just a part of my life:)

Not at all. Especially in the first phase of trying to change
something, it can be incredibly frustrating if nothing you do seems to
help any.

Wow, way to go with the exercise!

In addition to the other suggestions in the thread, it might help to
look for things that might stall you. Some people get stalled by diet
sodas or coffee, some by other food  using sugar replacements. Maybe
it would help if you posted what you eat on a regular day
Good luck.

Water and fat are not the same thing.  So you swung 2 pounds of water.
My water swing is 6 pounds and I'm male.

Simple solution.  Get off the beeping scale so often.  You're driving
youreself nuts for the sole purpose of causing yourself pain.

So you're completely successfull, then.  And looking for a way to
snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.  Sorry, I won't help.

Post a detailed menu with amounts of everything that goes in your mouth.
Maybe you're eating something that's a common blocker like the bars.
