I went to Blimpie for lunch today. For those of you not familiar,
Blimpie is a submarine sandwich seller in the US. Nowhere near the
market penetration of Subway, but I have always preferred Blimpie over
Subway.
Blimpie had advertised low carb before Subway, but given that there
are only 3 in Columbus, and none particularly close, I hadn't made it
there until lunch today.
Their answer to LC is a high-fiber whole grain LC bread. The bread
isn't bad, but it is very coarse. They also toast the bread, which
was a nice touch.
You can order any of the sandwiches they offer on the LC bread. I
ordered a Blimpie Best with double the meat (ham, prosciutto,
something else, lettuce, tomato, cheese, mustard, and pickle for me).
I would definitely recommend the sandwich. Tasty.
Blimpie also offers a several "recipe" sandwiches, all of which are
posted with Net Effective Carb Counts (NECC). In addition, they also
offer the following:
Brownie: 0g NECC
Chips: 5g NECC
Sobe Lean Cranberry Orange Beverage: 1 NECC
The sandwiches and salads range from 5g - 10g NECC.
I did not try the brownie. I didn't know if they used Malitol, and
fears of spending the afternoon in the crapper made me avoid it. The
store manager mentioned that they had to return their carb-counter
chips, as a "manufacturing problem" (that did not affect the "safety"
of the "chips") made the chips taste bad. This store also did not yet
have the Sobe drink fountain installed.
The counter personnel and manager knew nothing about the low carb
lifestyle. He repeatedly asked if I wanted to make it into a meal
with the regular chips. Sigh.

Um, you know that the peopletaking orders behind the counter at your
favorite fast-food restaurants don't give a crap about what lifestyle
you participate in, it's their job to ask "do you want
fries/chips/lard soaked onions wiht a bacon chaser" with your meal
REGARDLESS of what you order.
Cheers,
Nina
