Jean B. - 20 Jan 2004 16:35 GMT Maybe I should ask this, but how many of you actually measure things like salad greens? I kept measurements in mind, but I sure didn't measure them. Are most people here that precise?

Cheryl - 20 Jan 2004 16:37 GMT The first couple times i ate something I measured to get an idea.. but now I just eye ball it.

LEARN the carb count of the things you eat regularly, so eventually you can stop all that counting!

Sure, I was quite aware of carb counts and paid a lot of attention to them in the beginning. But I never did actually measure my lettuce, for example. OTOH, I ate a reasonably sized amount--not a wheelbarrow full!

Are most people here that precise? I measure most things but I just "eyeball" salad. I mean, if it's 2 cups or 2.5 cups, the difference is pretty small in terms of calories or carbs.

I guess, in a way, I feel a bit guilty about not measuring such things, but really, is an extra 1/2 cup or even a cup of lettuce going to matter? Not vary carby to say the least, and very few cals too.

DJ Delorie - 20 Jan 2004 16:59 GMT After the first week, I never measured salad greens. I figured, fibrous veggies are good for you and you need to eat a couple of *pounds* of them to be "too much", so it was something I really didn't need to worry about.
However, after a while I did buy a scale that I can just put my plate on and weigh everything as I add it. Very convenient, yet still accurate, especially for the dressing, which has lots of calories in a small amount.

DJ Delorie - 21 Jan 2004 00:01 GMT > That's a great idea! Lots less fuss doing it that way! For reference, I got an Escali Belecco[1], goes up to 6 lbs. I got mine from an eBay store. In retrospect, it's smaller than I expected so you have to peek under the plate to see the numbers sometimes.
The key feature is that it has a "tare" function, which rezeros the reading. Add food, note weight, hit "tare", add next food, note weight, hit "tare", etc. Of course, you tare out the plate itself first.
It's also gram-accurate.

I'll have to get it down from the top of the fridge and do some experiments.

Diane Mancino - 21 Jan 2004 13:11 GMT my handful is about 1 cup- but for higher carb items, I measure or weigh.

And we have to keep track of the nuts especially. Noooooooo, I'm not going to think of the few tamari-roasted almonds I have downstairs....

Are most people here that precise? I measured for about 2 weeks when I was tracking everything on Fitday. But I've never tried to limit them at all, I apparently can lose weight eating as much salad as I want.

I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

I can't eat much fruit (oh what a treat when I do), and I don't eat starchy veggies, but I do want my salad.

Are most people here that precise? When doing the evening's salad I've found that I absolutely have to limit the amount of lettuce to < 100 grams. Best is 70-80 grams. On top of that I may add a mushroom or two, some cucumber, some red onion, and maybe some other greens etc that are in season. The total for me shouldn't top 200 grams. If it does, I can't finish it.
At some point or other, calories DO start to count...

From what? 100 g of lettuce, acc. to the USDA site, ranges from 10 to 17 calories (average of the five types in their database). Now if one adds cheese, bacon, and copious amount of dressing (with the amount of dressing dictated by the amount of lettuce), etc., that's another thing. And stomach capacity is an entirely different issue!

Are most people here that precise? I do. I usually WEIGH them, though. I buy the various ingredients, wash, then measure, then dole out into 5-7 mason jars which I then seal with a Foodsaver. When I'm done, I have the grand total for all the veggies and divide by 5-7. That way, I have enough salad for a week and I always know how many carbs/cals are in them so I can factor them into the day's totals.

Are most people here that precise? I'm trying to train myself to learn food portions better, so I weigh everything. I've been doing that for about 10 weeks now, and I'm getting pretty good at it.

I've had a similar experience, both this time around and when I did Weight Watchers a few years back. I weigh and measure pretty carefully at home, but at the office I don't bring a scale or a set of measuring cups to the salad bar, so I have to eyeball. I try to think very carefully about what amounts look like - make a mental picture at home where I have my scale and cups and spoons, and bring that mental picture to work with me. When in doubt, I overestimate.

I also do that thing where a cup is about the size of your fist, a teaspoon is the size of your thumbtip, etc. Helps enormously.
