Jenny?
Do the nutritional labels in the US use total carbs when figuring out total
calories?  I think the answer is yes, yes?  I've notice in Fitday however,
only the net carbs are used to figure calories.  Hmmm.  What should we do to
figure our daily kcal requirements?  Include the fiber 'calories' or not?

I'm so confused.  I guess it doesn't (or shouldn't) make that big of
difference.

Amy,

American labels include fiber in the total carb count.  But they don't
figure into the calories.

That's because, being fiber, they don't digest. That was the whole rationale
behind the original "net carb" idea where you simply deducted fiber from
total carbs.

Sugar alcohols do figure into the calorie count--from less than one calorie
per gram (Erythritol)  to 3 calories per gram (the same as table sugar) for
some varieties of Maltitol. They're counted because they are metabolised and
turn into energy, unlike fiber.

Fiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate.  It aids in digestion but does not
get consumed or used by the body.  Sugar-alcohols (malitol, lacticol, etc)
may or may not be used by the body, people are always fighting about that
here.

I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

In relation to what you see on nutritional labels..Net Carbs = Total Carbs -
(Fiber + Sugar Alcohols).

As noted in this thread, sugar alcohols being subtracted from total carbs is
highly debatable. Some people do see an insulin response from sugar alcohols
and should avoid them. Others, like myself can ingest sugar alcohols ( I do
so in moderation) with  little to no effect on insulin. You have to gauge
your own tolerance to them before deciding not to count those carbs.
