Weight Gain

I went to Curves today. I did 40 minutes of training (went around 4 times).
So when I am done I think to myself, I'll just check my weight while I am
here. I am a pound heavier then I was two days ago. I am thinking, how can
that be? I am following Atkins, punching my numbers into fitday, eating the
right amount of calories. What's going on?

Angel (she works there) says "did you just weigh yourself?"

"yea" I says

"Well do you know you weigh more just after exercising hard than you do
normally"

I learn something new everyday.

For the first time and possibly the last time, I agree with Mu.  I'd like to
see that too.

I don't know "why" either, but it seems to be true. Saw it all the time when
working there, and "offical" weigh/measures were only done before. Muscle
expansion or some such thing. Who knows?

Yep. I find that after a hard workout, I weight about .5 lbs more.
I drink alot of water when I work out, so that likely factors into it.

It has something to do with the muscles swelling.  I'm sorry that's all I
can tell you if it's worth anything.

Swelling does not increase weight, it is expansion. Think about what
you're saying here. If you trip and sprain your ankles and it swells
up you've gained weight...where did the weight come from? Physics
teaches us that there is no create/destroy merely transformations. If
some transforms and has less mass (wood burning), the difference is
expelled in flying ash, smoke and fire/heat. Add them up and you get
the original mass. Our bodies don't break the law of physics. If we
increase weight is must be because we are taking something in (food,
water) You will certainly retain some of that weight as your muscles
repair theselves over the next 48 hours--which is when you build
muscle tissue-after exercise.

Unless food is being sucked from the air through osmosis, you can't be
gaining weight. Most people are probably thinking the water they drank
during exercise is insignificant. They're wrong.

One cup, 8 fluid ounces of water weighs..... tada... 8 weight ounces
or 1/2 pound. So a typical tall water bottle is a pound or more of
water. Assuming you drank nothing else but that one bottle.

I find that extremely hard to believe--at least exercise isn't causing
it! (which seems to have been inferred) The body is a relatively
closed system, we all know there are a limited ways of things to go in
and out of the body.

IN:  Eating, drinking, injecting(needles), breathing...
OUT: body heat, body chemistry, water & solid waste, sweating,
puking...

It's not like by exercising you are going to absorb stuff from the air
around you. And anything metabolized in the body would have to come
from what is in the body and would produce byprodcuts and heat.

If people weigh heavier after a workout I would assume it were due to
the water that they drink while exercising exceeding how much was
sweated. I've been weighing myself at different times and found
whether you weigh yourself before or after going to the bathroom can
vary your weight by 3 pound. Clothes can vary it by 3 pounds as well.
Food that you eat can vary it by 1-3 pounds, shoes more.

Weighing myself each morning immediately after first trip to the
bathroom I've had very steady weight loss patterns, typically around
1/2 pound or less a day (although I had two big days, 1.5-2.0-probably
water whoosh).

I weigh the same after exercising, but sometimes my measurements are
larger.  I have heard that weightlifting can temporarily "pump up" muscles.

That makes sense. I tend to drink as much water as I can before a workout
and drink during as well. so it is probably water.

I guess I was having a blond moment for even entertaining the idea. Of
course now that I have thought about it, I couldn't have gain just from
exercising alone

If you want to feel better think about the exercise person that told
you it in the first place. They still believe it!

I do know that we weigh heavier because our muscles swell, how or why I'm
not sure.  It's been explained to me before, but that's all I can tell you
for now.

The only possibility I can think of for weighing more after working out is
if you drink more water than you sweat off while exercising.  The logic for
weighing and measuring you before working out at Curves is that your
muscles can temporarily expand, and they like to weigh and measure you at
the same time so they don't have to get your records out, then measure you,
then put them back, then get them out again later to weigh you.

*A* pound?  The subject line is weight gain.  That doesn't even count
as water swing.  My water swing is 6 pounds for comparison.  You're
getting on the scale far too often and driving yourself nuts for no
good reason.  Get off the scale if you're going to do this garbage
toyourself.

Starting a new exercise plan will cause your muscle to hoard carbs
for a while, dissolved in water.  It is standard.  But you teeny tiny
one pound is too small get get on the radar screen of water retention
caused by exercise.

I don't even own a scale just because of that reason. I was just at the gym
and was like Why not? Seeing the scale up one pound was just a "Huh?"
moment. I thought it kinda humorous, not a serious thing. I know this WOE
works. It worked two years ago when i did it, it will work again. Especially
now that I am exerciseing. I didn't exersice the first time and it still
worked real well.

I didn't know that.  Thanks.  Makes my work on the torture
machine easier.
