I recently discovered Polaner Sugar-Free preserves at Wal-Mart.
They cost about a third as much as the low-carb preserves at GNC.
They are tasty.

The label shows 5 carbs per tablespoon which seems high,
but they don't have a breakdown on how much of that is fiber.

I e-mailed the Polaner folks and got the following response:

----------------------------

"Low carb" claims are not
officially defined by the
Food and Drug Administration
yet -- they are working on
definitions and regulations.
However, the general industry
guideline for carbs is:

Total carbohydrates (which
includes sugars) minus
carbohydrates which have
minimal impact on blood sugar
levels, i.e. low glycemic
impact, such as dietary fiber,
sugar alcohols (e.g. sorbitol),
and glycerin equals net carbs.
Since the polydextrose
ingredient in our sugar free
preserves is mostly fiber and
would be subtracted from total
carbs (presently 5) to give net
carbs, net carbs would come
down as low as approximately
2.4 to 2.5 grams.
-----------------------------

Yay!!  We have another source of goodies that is reasonably low
in carbs.

I can use the 1 carb/slice wheatbread from GNC, Wal-Mart peanut
butter (3 carbs per 2 tbsp) and Polaner preserves for an honest-
to-god PB&J for lunch.  Plus, I can have it with a glass
of Carb Countdown milk.  Atkins-legal, cheap, and yummy.

Things are lookin' up.

Smuckers also makes sugar free jams which are quite good.. think the carb
count is the same but I don't have a jar handy at the moment.. grape,
strawberry.. raspberry and also think there is a peach or apricot and
blackberry. my kids love them so that is all I buy anymore.

The Smuckers taste better but they have Nutra Sweet and lots of people don't
like that.  Polaner has just natural fruit juice as a sweetner.  The Polaner
tastes really good if you warm it - discovered this by accident -

Just as a reminder, "natural fruit juice" is a form of sugar. That said,
there are some "lite" jams that are less sweet than others, and have a
correspondingly lower carb count per serving.

In Canada, Smuckers and at least one other brand have no-sugar added
jams sweetened with Splenda.

Diet Smuckers here uses aspartame.  I used to buy Estee diabetic jam,
which used fructose, and was 4 or 5g per Tbsp, but they stopped making
it.  I haven't seen a SF jam without aspartame around here in a long time.

So, I took to nuking a few frozen strawberries or blueberries until soft,
mashing with a fork and mixing in Splenda.

I'm hoarding the stuff I brought back from Canada. I would have brought
more, but when I saw that the Smuckers had Splenda, I thought I'd be
able to get it here as well. Hah!

I had my hopes dashed with Smuckers too.  All their stuff tastes
great, but aspartame (nutra-sweet) is a no-no for most Atkins
aficionados (or any other low-carb folks, as well).  Aspartame has the
same effect as sugar.

Maybe Smuckers will get on the low-carb bandwagon and produce
something that suits us.  Most of their competitors will, or are
already.

Why is it that companies like Smuckers are using Splenda elsewhere
and not here?

Thanks for posting this!  I had rejected these as being too high
in carbs.  Hmmm.  It is almost tempting to run out and get some
for a PB&J on LC bread.

Thanks for posting about the PB& J sandwich. Right now I'm using Polaner Sugar
free (not as good to me as the Keto raspberry, but a lot cheaper, so  it'll
do!) and Trader Joe's natural peanut butter on Rudi's bread (4 net carbs.) The
GNCs in our area don't have freezers so I've never seen one-carb bread there.
Can you find the bread anywhere else? I've also heard that one-carb Low Carb
Emporium bread is available in SE PA, but haven't found that either. Thanks in
advance for any info on this.
