Lyle McDonald's CKD vs Atkins diet

Fred - 24 Jan 2004 21:47 GMT I've been doing a McDonald-style cyclical ketogenic diet, and working out for 40 minutes a day. On about the sixth day, I get really weak on the treadmill, so replenishing muscle glycogen on the seventh day restores my available energy. At the beginning of the following week, it only takes me about 24 hours to get back into ketosis.
I've been reading about the Atkins' diet. How come he doesn't mention CKD? Which is better, L.McDonald's CKD or the Atkins program, (for folks who work out for 40 minutes a day, that is)? And why? Should I change to the Atkins program where carbs are gradually increased, rather than continuing with CKD and very low carb intake?
Thank you
Fred
JC Der Koenig - 24 Jan 2004 22:42 GMT Atkins is a mass-marketing program to get money from idiot fat f.cks who don't know any better. Note the success of Atkins fakefoods.
The CKD, TKD, and Anabolic Diet were created for a niche market of highly motivated athletes.
Pick the one that suits you.

I lost 75 lbs on atkins... craming as much food down my throat as I could handle with the help of ZERO exercize (none, nil) setting on the couch watching seinfeld... losing weight. HAHAHAHAHAHA, people like you amuse me mr. keonig. get a real life.
JC Der Koenig - 25 Jan 2004 00:04 GMT So you're still flabby and weak, but smaller.
Am I supposed to be impressed?
Sitting on the couch, watching Seinfeld is a real life?
I believe I'll disregard that suggestion. Thanks anyway.

JC Der Koenig - 25 Jan 2004 11:29 GMT Do you know the meaning of "reality disconnect"?
You have the worst case I've seen in a while.

The only punkers I noticed were the Sex Pistols. Because they were funny.

If you have ever hit the gym HARD while doing a LC WOE, then you would understand why he is asking what he is asking... Because to run for thirty minutes at 9 mph or to lift with high intensity and do so without carbs is difficult, and people who can do it get credit from me - big time.
I can relate to what he is asking, and I can actually sort of agree with jc, because Atkins makes you think you need to purchase their foods to succeed. Not the late Dr. Atkins, but the mega company the Atkins Nutritional center... They are the ones who want to sell you the Atkins advantage products.
It makes people think they need to use this crap to lose weight... When in reality it will stall them in most cases.

Recently I spotted some messages from that were very similiar to those of JC that upseted you so much two months ago...
What a progress :)

Yes - you got the point. When I (and I guess most people) work out hard after being on a very low carb diet (like 30g of carb a day), soon you become very tired and weak in the gym - due to lack of muscle glycogen, I presume.
I'm now looking at either:
a) continuing doing a CKD b) switching to a TKD c) doing the Atkins approach of increasing carbs gradually after induction, untill weoght loss stops, then reducing the carbs a bit. d) staying on 'induction' diet and *forcing* myself to work out hard, despite the extreme difficulty and unpleasant symptoms it induces.
But I think I won't do (d) because I've tried it in the past and became a real wreck of a person, unable to function effectively in general. That's why I'm particularly interested in (a) and (b) and (c), but am still not clear which one is best for me - a person primarily trying to burn fat, doing 40 mins of cardio+weights each day.
Any helpful comments appreciated.

Honestly, you don't need to do a CKD ( you can if you want to do so obviously) -- that is really for big time lifters -- and you're mainly doing cardio (why are you weighting everyday?). If you continue doing LC --- you'll adapt and you'll mostly likely find a CKD to be completely unnecessary.
Since you workout regularly, you can certainly increase your carb level...well beyond induction levels. It is very likely that that will be fine.
Honestly, unless you're doing really hard HIIT -- and you'er not since you're doing it every day w/ weight training, you don't need extra carbs for it.
One can make all of these work, but be careful with weekly CKDs. A lot of people find them hard to manage -- they are not just free ticket to eat whatever you want
Also, think that you're burning calories. If your body uses more than you eat, you'll lose (hopefully) fat.

A light weekly carb up will help with tough workouts until that glycogen store is used up. Some workouts like riding a bike 50 miles at a moderate pace can be done comfortably on low carb and there is certainly some training effect from doing those kinds of exercises. It is only the extreme workouts where you are working out near 100% of your strength that require the extra carbs.
