At the risk of appearing stupid, I have only seen the word blog in the past
few weeks, and would like to know exactly what it stands for.  I assume it
is some kind of log.

That's the etymology of it, but a blog is kind of an on-line diary with
interactive features; people can comment on your entries, and you can
then follow-up on their comments.

It's *frequently* the case that the owner of a web log has space for
others to comment, but not always. There are famous examples of both
those with and without comment sections.

A couple other conventions: pages appear in reverse chronological
order (newest stuff at the top) and each specific post usually has a
specific link, so you can share the address (http://wwwand so on) with
a friend. Sometimes you get that specific address by clicking the word
'link,' or 'permalink,' or sometimes it's the time of the post.

Also www.livejournal.com, deadjournal.com, and so on.

Blogging covers everything from LOL U R teh r0x0r! teenspeak to heavy
drama to diet logs to diaries and the like.  A lot of people use them
to stay in touch with friends, plan events, and the like.

I use mine as an extension of my website.

Cheers,

generally post the stuff I can't post to usenet because it would be too
dull.

I use mine because I'm under the pathetic delusion that my day-to-day
life is so fascinating that it must be recorded for posterity:

But then, my ego is HUGE. :-)

Nina,
Your website is great! Any news on the sitcom you alluded to recently?

There's never any news.  Things move slow as molasses until they want
them yesterday.  It used to drive me batty, now i just enjoy my
unemployment, do some freelance  and figure the TV Gods will call when
they're ready. :)

And thanks!

Abbreviation of weblog.

Its a digital diary. Remember when you wrote your daily diary entries? Now
people want the world to read it.

An excellent metaphor for the narcissism of the age.

Thanks for the information.  I wonder why no one else happened to mention
that it was an abbreviation for weblog.

A public posting of one's daily life that some people seem to think is of
major interest to everyone in the world. One of the more ridiculous facets
of the internet.. in my opinion...

that's one way they get used, but there are a lot of smart, interesting
people who have smart, interesting weblogs.  you shouldn't denigrate the
entire genre just because you haven't bothered to seek out anything
other than crappy examples of it.

web + log= weblog shortened to "blog"
