Just a quick note with my current weight loss status:
I was at 203 when I got up this morning, I was at 204 on Friday...not sure
where that pound went but I'm not going to go look for it.
I've noticed something I find odd as I have progressed with weight loss.
When I first started this WOE I would start the day with weighing myself in
the morning (every morning, 5:30am) and, when I weighed myself at the end of
the day, I would often be 3-5 pounds heavier in the evening than when I woke
up that morning. Fairly easy to understand, or so I thought, given the food
and water consumed through the day. The next morning that 3-5 pounds would
normally be gone plus, ever so slowly, a bit more. Now, after being down
70+ pounds I am finding that I'm not fluctuating nearly so much between my
morning and evening weight...often no more than 1 pound. And now, the
evening to morning weight also often varies less than a pound. I can, of
course, easily skew this by drinking more water or weighing myself at
different times in the evening but, being a creature of habit, most of the
time this pattern seems to be holding true. I find this rather odd as I
have not changed by any appreciable measure the amount of food I am eating
or the amount of water I am drinking. This isn't a problem at all, just not
what I expected. I don't fully understand it yet.
I finally tried on a pair of 32 pants this morning. I was pleasantly
surprised that they fit. Around the waist anyway. I still have a bit more
to lose in the backend before I can wear them comfortably.
I am now too skinny for my "skinny" business suits. Over the years I've
accumulated suits in three different sizes, what I called skinny, fat and
really fat. I wore the latter category for much too long and, until very
recently, hadn't worn the former since about 1985. I'm hoping that I can
get a tailor to adjust these smallest suits, these darn things are
expensive. This is actually quicker than I expected this to happen and I
have nothing budgeted for replacing these. I know, what a problem to
have...
My wife is doing great with this too, she is now down 48 pounds since
starting this with me, and is looking great. I took her shopping yesterday
and helped her pick out her new wardrobe for the spring and summer. She was
pleased to see that, while not yet where she wants to be, she is within one
dress size of being where she was when we were married. I think she is
happy and getting happier. Funny how, when she is happy, I'm happy.
One of my goals was to be at 195 by our anniversary (which is February 27th,
21 years for those who care.) I am within spitting distance of that weight
by that time, I hope I make it. But, I'm not going to complain if I don't,
this WOE is working for me and I feel great.
Thanks for listening, and thank you for your continued support.

What a fantastic story, JJ! That's wonderful that you and your wife are
successful losers and can enjoy the benefits together.
Thanks for sharing. :)

My theory is that lean body mass just doesn't hold water the way fat does.
You're losing fat, and maybe building lean mass, so it's natural that
you'll vary less than before.
I have zero (count 'em, zero) cites to back up this theory. It just seems
logical to me from what I know of biochemistry.

Thanks. I've certainly conjectured that water retention (in whatever form)
is playing a role here, but I'm not sure I understand it completely yet.
As I said, this is not a problem, just a bit odd to me. Unfortunately, my
experiences with this particular pattern don't contribute anything more than
anecdotal information. Lots of variables here and no controls around it,
just an observation over time.
On a separate note: You sound like you are doing very well yourself with the
low-carb thing. When are we going to get to see your pictures?

The very minute I get a digital camera. Which is in the top ten on my list

Ah, this I understand.
My oldest is in her second year at a university here in GA...she manages to
keep both of us broke.

JJ,
I've noticed something similar too. In fact, I posted a message here a
while back asking why I lost 2 lbs every night. Now that I'm at goal, I no
longer do.
I also find that if I carb up for a while (as I did around Christmas) and
then go back onto a strict low carb regimen I lose almost no weight now
during the first week. I lost almost 8 lbs restarting my low carb regimen
back when I weighed 30 pounds more.
I'm not sure what the explanation is, but I suspect it is one of the reasons
that people who reach goal and then crash off the diet for a week or two may
have such a tough time getting back on. You no longer get the huge early
reinforcement of losing a bunch of pounds when you go back on the diet,
which makes it easy to feel it isn't working and panic.

It's got to be either level of foods/water versus waste or water
rentention in fat cels. Maybe adipose tissues retain water/something.
Maybe you are more regular now, where you weren't before, or you were
simply retaining/digesting food slower in the intestines-- your
intestinal tract may have become a bit healthier, the way lungs
recover from a smoker that quits. I haven't read much on the effects
on the colon from these changes. Atkins believed the colon is a
critical component in everyday health and one ignored too often by
current medical practices.

Great stuff. Congrats.
32 pants... I think I wore those when I was in junior high.
