I had my cholesterol tested (fasting) on Feb 21, 2003. I started the Atkins
diet in June of 2003. My latest test is from Jan 14, 2004.
Total Cholesterol went up from 163 to 168
HDL cholesterol went up from 71 to 82
LDL cholesterol went down from 77 to 75
Triglycerides went from 73 to 56.
Some things did go up, though:
ALT went from 16 to 21 but still within range. BUN went from 21 to 23.
BUN/Creatinine Ratio went from 23 to 33. That's the only one that is "out
of range" with the range being from 8-27.
Several things went down: serum Creatinine from 0.9 to 0.7, serum sodium
from 140 to 129, total serum protein from 7.0 to 6.8 (I thought this was a
high protein diet!), serum chloride from 106 to 105, and serum alkaline
phosphates from 75 to 64.
Still, the ole Atkins diet can't be THAT bad for a person. My ratio of HDL
to total Cholesterol went from 2.29 down to 2.04. All in all, I am pretty
pleased. Now, I have to find out about that BUN/Creatinine Ratio....
My belief is that this way of eating is not as extreme or odd as some people
would have you think. I heard a commercial for some weight loss product
talking about the "severe side effects of the Atkins diet" but I haven't
heard anyone here mention anything like that. Just eating less sugar seems
to have helped quite a bit, but I don't know if that accounts for the HDL
going up.

Severe side effects of the Atkins diet:
weight loss
more energy
better cholesterol labs
never being hungry shortly after eating
Anyone else?

Permanently normal blood pressure, even when screwing up maintenance.
Goodbye a cluster of symptoms of food alergy: snoring, chronic cough,
indigestion, constant gas.

No more dry skin.
No more heartburn/acid reflux.
Regularity of the bowel kind. :-)

You know, I hadn't even noticed that my occasional heartburn no longer
occurs.

When something bad *goes away* it can be quite hard to notice unless
someone else points it out. All my life I'd had a smokers cough but
had not touched tobacco. Friends even knew when I was coming to their
door from my cough. It went away around the end of Induction yet it
was a while before someone pointed out that I wasn't coughing any more.
When something bad *comes back* it's somewhat easier to notice. The
first time I tried wheat several months in, I immediately noticed the
cough and indigestion come back but others had had to point them out
to me when they'd gone away.
Outside perspective helps a lot. Half of Atkins is identifying food
intolerance symptoms and causes but *how* is not discussed in the books
because the symptoms are too varied and individual. Description was
beyond Dr A's writing skills. I suspect folks who got to see him in
person came away with a pretty good understanding of how to figure out
a food intolerance.

That cough was probably related to your indigestion. It's a common symptom
of acid reflux disease.

Almost immediate repair of my previously damaged kidneys, and blood
tests showing that the improvement has continued after more than 5 1/2
years of low-carbing. So much for the 'kills your kidneys'
nay-sayers!
