Betty Lou Locke - 28 Jan 2004 23:46 GMT Hi out there , so far the last week of induction is going great , I have a question " love to go to the shows"Can I have popcorn I know the butters ok , but love popcorn . Happy girl.
Cheri - 29 Jan 2004 00:28 GMT You can have anything you want, but popcorn is definitely not on the low carb food list. Personally, I would skip it if I was you and take along some jerky, a small baggie of pork rinds, or something like that. Good luck.

Happy girl. depends on which diet you're following. SouthBeach allows popcorn in small amounts (get the kiddie size!), because it's a good source of fiber and has a moderate glycemic index (i believe it's around 50 for two cups)

Although I follow the Atkins plan fairly rigorously, movie popcorn is my exception. I don't go to the movies very often, because I'm so picky about the movies I see. But when I do, I still get that large popcorn covered with that artificial trans-fatty hot liquid that passed for butter. ;-)
The occassional popcorn has never stalled my weight loss. Just very recently, I think I figured out why: popcorn has a relatively low glycemic index (55). It's not as devastating as, say, candy, potato chips, etc. It doesn't cause a huge insulin spike; that's probably how I get away with it. Go for it, IMO.

I didn't know popcorn was low GI, maybe that's why I have no problem eating it occasionally at work. It also may be that I only eat one or two cups when I _do_ eat it, and a cup of oil-popped popcorn only has 55 calories.

Happy girl. curt - 29 Jan 2004 04:45 GMT I smuggle in a bag of peanuts from the grocery bulk section. Usually costs me .50 cents as opposed to the popcorn's 3.50 and you get to throw the shells on the floor, which if fun.

Teeb - 29 Jan 2004 04:48 GMT I would say just try it and see what happens.. I have popcorn on occasion and it doesn't cause cravings or stall me at all.. It is, as most things, one of those things you will just have to experiment with. However, watch the salt.. if that causes you to bloat up, you may wrongly blame it on the popcorn itself. Maybe try a bag of no salt or low salt microwave popcorn and check it out that way...

(Occassional popcorn doesn't stall my weight loss, YMMV).

Bearitos brand makes a no-salt, no-oil microwave popcorn. It's not too bad, especially if you like to season it yourself with something other than salt. (They also make a salted, no-oil popcorn.) I used to get this at Whole Foods (haven't had any since I started LC), so if there's one of those near you, you might start there.

You can make your own by putting regular popcorn kernels in a heavy bowl (Pyrex, Corningware, etc.), spray it with cooking spray, cover and pop as you would microwave popcorn (3 - 4 minutes depending on your oven.

Garypa - 29 Jan 2004 05:32 GMT Popcorn is one of those lower-glycemic things I can sometimes sneak in too, with no problems. Went to see the Diane Keaton-Jack Nicholson movie the other night and though I had smuggled in a small bag of sunflower kernels and a few wedges of cheddar, the will caved and I ended up sharing a medium bucket with extra "butter." Didn't stir up cravings and no weight gain, happy to say.
Luna - 29 Jan 2004 05:32 GMT > Hi out there , so far the last week of induction is going great , I have a > question " love to go to the shows"Can I have popcorn I know the butters ok > , but love popcorn . Happy girl. Popcorn is pretty high-carb, and unless they use real butter, then the "butter" is not good either, because it's full of trans-fats. You should bring some low-carb snacks of your own, or eat a meal before you go. If you really _must_ have popcorn, I bet it wouldn't hurt too much to ask them to give you a courtesy cup of popcorn. You know, the free cups for water. They're usually tiny. I work at a movie theater and I still cheat occasionally with a courtesy cup of popcorn, and I'm still losing.

Dave Dumanis - 29 Jan 2004 16:58 GMT I love popcorn. You can have it if you're on maintenance. A cup or so at a time, not huge bowls. And like Luna says, no hydrogenated crap on top. Just butter or Smart Balance. I personally have some butter-flavored sunflower oil which I love and it's full of Omega-3s. Got it at Target.
Now someone's gonna go publicize "Hey, you can have popcorn on Atkins!" and people will wonder why their induction's failing.
I've said it before and I"ll say it again... read the book, folks.

Luna - 29 Jan 2004 17:43 GMT Well, I'm not on Atkins, but I've been losing weight while eating small amounts of popcorn once a week or so. Small. Like two handfulls. It's not allowed on Atkins, but obviously for some people it can be allowed on a general low-carb diet. That's why I don't like to tie myself down to the "Atkins" label, I like to experiment more while generally following the Atkins guidelines, because I believe that weight loss is all about eating fewer calories, and low-carb is just the method I prefer for lowering my caloric intake. So, even with my popcorn, I am still lower carb than I used to be, and much lower calorie than I used to be, (I have a couple of handfuls of popcorn once a week, as opposed to two bags of chips every week). So, to the OP, if you're doing Atkins, you are cheating if you have popcorn before the maintenance phase. If you are doing generic low-carb, you have to make up your own rules and decide whether you're cheating or not.

I started out originally in April 2001 "doing Atkins" to a tee. But afteby now I've just learn what I can and can't eat, and it's evolved into my own generic low-carb plan. I guess I still base my premise on Atkins, but I haven't used the book as a guide for a couple of years.
As you pointed out, we don't cheat on "Atkins" or whatever other diet guru we follow, we really cheat on ourselves. We each have to decide what works/doesn't work for us as individuals.

Cheri - 29 Jan 2004 19:52 GMT I agree, but the original poster did say she is on the second week of induction, so I assumed she was doing Atkins. I personally don't do Atkins anymore. I watch my carbs from a diabetic standpoint, and watch my calories as well. Whatever fits into that works for me, but I have to be careful with LC treats that are bigger than one serving, because I tend to overeat them. -- Cheri Type 2, no meds for now.

AFAIK, the OP *is* following (or trying to follow) Atkins' plan.

If someone can eat a small amount of popcorn without going back for more, it's allowed on Atkins, within your personal carb limit. One cup is about 5g carb, though, and is a pretty small amount of popcorn. Even a quart is smaller than a small popcorn at most theatres, and microwave popcorn is about 10 to 12 cups.
That said, I just wanted to mention that several brands of microwave kettle corn list Splenda, not sugar, in the ingredients, although sugarfree isn't mentioned on the label. (I suspect real sugar would've gunked it up and made it stick together and burn while popping).

Doug Freyburger - 29 Jan 2004 22:42 GMT > so far the last week of induction is going great ... > Can I have popcorn ... Induction: If it's not on the list, it does not pass your lips. Popcorn is not on the list, nor is any other type of grain.
> but love popcorn ... Unfortunately, the very first bad thing folks reach for is likely to be a binger trigger, food intolerance, addiction source for them. Corn allergies are *very* common and you just exhibited one of the first hints that you need to expect problems with corn.
OWL and the carb ladder are different from Induction. As long as you understand the two interwining reasons items appear in the order they do, you can eat from later rungs ahead of schedule because it's a guideline not a rule.
Jo-Anne - 31 Jan 2004 03:33 GMT She states she is on induction phase of Atkins so "No" no popcorn is allowed.. You must follow the induction phase closely...
