Bought a 4-pack of the Slim Fast new low carb shakes. Nutritional info
looks good, regarding carbs, calcium, fiber, protein, etc. I was
drinking one today and glanced at the ingredients. After water and
milk solids, the 3rd ingredient is canola oil!!! I really think that's
nasty. After I read that, all I could think of with each swallow was
that I was drinking chocolate flavored vegetable oil. I'll try to
drink the last two, but I don't think I'll be buying them again. Too
much fat....and oil. Yuck.

Good move.  I couldn't see very many ingredients in that product
which resembled food in the least.

The 3rd ingredient in the Atkins shakes is soybean oil, if I'm not mistaken.
How else can they get 9 grams of fat into those shakes? LOL!

Oops...soybean. My bad. I thought it was canola. It's oil, though.

It might be canola in the Slim Fast shakes. I was just comparing them to the
Atkins shakes. The Advantage shakes have half the fat, so they probably have
oil further down the ingredients rung. Personally, I have 1-2 Atkins shakes a
week (when I've GOT to eat, and have no time- and I won't do bars, they have
sugar alcohols) and like that they have the extra fat in them. Fat is GOOD! Eat
more fat, burn more fat, yum!

Oops! Sorry to piggyback posts, but I didn't mean Atkins Advantage. I was
talking about the ones that come in the paper containers instead of a can.
Can't think of the name right now...

Lee,

Just curious ... did you taste it before you read the ingredients?  Or was
it only because you read the ingredients that your were grossed out?  How do
they taste?

Canola is a "healthy" oil, high in monounsaturated fats; helps lower HDL
cholesterol.  Why is this gross?  (I'm not being  facetious, I'm serious.).
Is it just the thought that  you are drinking something with an oil in it
that bothers you?  We eat oils all the time in various foos.

I had one of the shakes a few weeks ago, and didn't glance at the
ingredients. It tasted okay - nothing great. Then, I had my second one
yesterday, which is when I looked at the ingredients. After reading
that oil was ingredient #3, all I could taste (and feel in my mouth)
was oil.

I know canola oil isn't a "bad" oil. But, that doesn't mean I want to
drink it. Fat is fat. As ingredients are listed in order of weight,
seems to me that there's too much oil in this "beverage", pushing it
over the "healthy" limit.

I probably won't try it now either.  I wouldn't be able to get rid of the
image that's popped into my head of sipping from a can of 10W30 motor oil.

I think the drink your meal diets are insane. It just violates common
sense for me. When my father was dying of throat cancer he stopped
being able to swallow solids. He had to drink Ensure because he simply
couldn't eat nutritiously. I can't look at the meal-drinks without
thinking that that is the same idea as for people who are so sick that
they drink or I.V. their meals. It isn't natural and teaching yourself
to simply not eat solid food is wrong. Regardless of what they put in
the stuff.

Let's see. I bought this 4-pack about two weeks ago, and just had my
second one yesterday. I'm not sure this discussion was about
"drinking" vs. "chewing" your meals, but, at least for me, these
shakes were purchased and cosnumed as a convenience "food" when I
didn't have time or ingredients to make a meal of solid food. I hardly
think that two meal replacement shakes in a two-week span of time is
"insane".

So, you personally, have problems with meal replacement shakes becuase
of past trauma. Sorry about the loss of your dad. But, keep in mind
that our experiences are different - what works for some may not work
for others. That's no reason to call someone else's way "insane".

My past "trauma" just makes it more obvious that meal-replacement is,
in fact, "fasting" under a new clever marketing term. Practicing
"fasting" meals as a way to maintain weight doesn't seem practical or
wise. Might as well try Slim-Fast and teach your body to eat only one
meal a day.

I make my own shake using 1/3 cup cottage cheese, cold hazelnut coffee,
ground flax seed and splenda or sweet & low to taste, plenty of ice.  It's
not that bad.  If you can afford the carbs you could use frozen strawberries
& coconut flavoring.

Eww. Maybe the oil sippers will like it. ;-)

So you don't use any oil when you cook?  What's the difference between
ingesting oil with solid food than with liquid food?   Kalish

I sure don't use that much oil when I cook.  Maybe if I had a
calorie deficit, I'd think of trying there, but they sound ugsome
(that's a real word!) to me.

You don't see any difference between drinking oil and adding a bit of
oil to your pan to sauté dinner? Of course I ingest oil, and use it
for cooking. Just never thought of it as a beverage.

There's food in those shakes?  <grin/duck>  Oil and milk solids were
the only remotely recognizable ingredients in the posted list of
ingredients.

I actually don't mind taking a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
straight sometimes.  Suppresses the appetite and coats the stomach
and digests slowly.  All for the price of 120 little calories.

Where did the oil sippers go?

After David Letterman had his heart bypass, he had a cooking segment
on his show and while the guest was preparing the meal, Letterman took
several swigs of olive oil straight from the bottle.

I'm pretty sure that his highly paid heart team told him that he
needed to add olive oil or other healthy oils to his diet.

So sometimes I do that.

OTOH, if I was told to consume it, I would cook with it and not
chug it.

I don't heat extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil.  It's liquid gold
in its pure form.  I put it atop salads in the form of dressing.
Yum!

Sure.  When I say cook, I don't necessarily mean with heat.  I
guess I think of making salads and salad dressing as "cooking".
Interesting evolution of the word I guess.

There you are. There used to be several sippers here, one was a
neighbor of mine. I've nothing against it, just prefer to find some
other way to get it into my diet.

I guess I'm in the minority here because I really like them! BUT I don't
drink them I freeze the cans & eat it like ice cream. Two carbs for 11.5 oz.
of "ice cream" is a nice nightly treat. I couldn't drink them as 2 meal
replacements like they suggest. I love my meat too much!
