How atkins failed for me.. HELP!

DRINKS:
-------
- I drank about 10-12 glasses of water per day. A total of ~4 liters (a
gallon!)
- In the first week I drank diet coke, and I even dropped that. No
coffee, no tea. JUST WATER.

During the last 30 days, the following occured:

- my birthday - I didn't eat the cake nor anything beyond what's listed
above.
- company events - drank only water while everyone around be endulged in
free food galore!

At no time in 30 days did I cheat... NOT ONCE!

BODY CHANGES:
-------------
- I go to the washroom (#2) about twice per week. Grose.. but it's a sign
it's working. right?
- I'm never tired anymore after food.
- I'm never hungry after a few hours of eating.
- I don't snack anymore.
- 1.5 weeks ago, I decided to increase my fat intake.. and now eat bacon
for breakfest, and
added it to the snack list. I also changed from hardboiled eggs to fried
eggs. In butter.
- I've tried using ketonstix, and it shows me that when I wake up, I'm
low. Most of the day
at trace. When I started eating more fatty foods, it went up to the
middle line.

RESULTS:
--------

In 30 days, I haven't lost a single lb. I weight myself every friday to
the same results.
I also didn't gain a lb. I have no medical conditions that I'm aware of,
and have lost weight
before on other diets (scarsdale medical diet.. which is an atkins like
diet.. except with highly
restricted calorie count).

All my friends that lost 20+ lbs in less than 6 months are shocked.  They
even called me
an extreamest for not cheating and counting every last gram. In many
cases, I've been sticking
to less than 10g.

As you can imagine, I'm at the boiling point. I'm getting married to a
wonderful person in July,
and I'm tired of being fat.

Today I had my first diet coke (hated it! water tastes so much better!!)
and went with my coworkers
out for chinease food (didn't touch the rice.. not used to carbs..)  So
technically speaking,
today's the first time in a month that I probably went over the 20g.

PLEASE HELP. WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME!?!???

1. How much are you eating. Eating less helps!

2. Are you eating any low carb labeled junk food bars, etc.

3. How much are you exercising?

please list specific menus of what & how much
you ate  --- that would be very helpful -

you dont say how much you have to lose  --

are you taking any medications? -

hard to believe but just one major mishap   of including
a food that you think is allowed ( but may not be )
could  prevent weight loss

I know - I had salsa the other day and
gained 3 lbs!  - found out later the restaurant  thickens her
salsa with CORNSTARCH!

Twice a WEEK?

There's your problem. You're carrying around about 15 pounds of poop.

Actually, speaking for a 350 lb person here... no it isn't. I've been
weighing myself very specifically. Being a "regular" guy, I was able
to weigh myself upon waking, two minutes later after relieving myself
and about 20 minutes later after a bowel movement. The water weight
was usually twice as heavy. My morning trips to the bathroom consisted
of 1.4 to 2.4 lbs of water waste and a max of 1.0 pound of solid. And
I've eaten as much as 3000 calories a day on Atkins. I also thought
solid waste was heavier than water, but it isn't true. And... well...
mine don't float so it isn't that mine are less dense than average. In
the last 5 days I have had only one day of bowel movements and it
didn't amount to much more than a 1lb despite being 3 days worth. I
have a lot less solid waste on this diet.

thats my usual, about every three days, and man is it everything.  i have
never done the weigh thing but if it was less than 3lbs id be surprised.

For bowel help, get some Acidolphus tablets -- something about helping
out the beneficial bacteria in your guts.  It's what Atkins said in
his Vita-Nutrients book -- and it certainly helped me.

Have you tried tracking the amount of calories that you are consuming?

You didn't say your weight (start/current/goal). Find it surprising
that you haven't lost/varied weight in 30 days. My weight changes
every day, up or down. Are your calorie counts very high for your
weight? Is there no change in your clothes, face, something?

If you are over 300 lbs a common problem is home scales can't measure
your weight. I recall a post here where someone said they couldn't
lose weight, but then realized that they had maxed out the scale. They
actually were more than the scale could measure and were actually
losing, despite the scale's dial being pegged. At 350 lbs most
300/330/350 lb scales were useless for me.

Atkins does talk about people with very resistance metabolisms who
don't respond at 20g. He has a chapter of how to deal with this.

Maybe you aren't eating enough carbs, 20 is usually better than 10 unless
you are very insulin-resistant.  Have your measurements changed?

You may have answered these questions before but:

how much weight do you want to lose?
what are you eating (sample daily menu would be useful)

Try cutting back on the bacon... There are loads of sodium in that stuff...
You can still end up eating too much on the Atkins program..

Actually... eating -less- than 20g carb isn't better... for me, it is worse!
(i went by the less is more thing for a bit there)

you *need* the vital nutrients your 2 cups of vegies per day provide you...
otherwise you body can't do anything... it certainly can't move those nasty
fat deposits.

..and <10g carb definately shouldn't be a prolonged thing... even atkins
induction is only meant to go for 2 weeks for a reason - your body cant keep
up with the induction regime forever.

at the end of all this... if your metabolism *really* doesn't want to play
the game after trying to up your carbs to the advised amount there is always
the Fat Fast.
(go to www.atkins.com and look for the how-to for induction. There is a link
there to go to if the weight just isn't moving no matter what)

You **definately** cant over-extend the fat fast diet past the days
suggested... and if you *dont* need to do it, then DONT - it can actually
seriously damage your metabolism if you already have one that is working
well enough to lose!

If you do need to do it, it can give your body the fat-burning kick start it
needs to catch up to some of those elusive losses you hear everyone else
having. :)

Good luck,
It is a hard road!

I feel your pain - especially when I read that someone else has lost
32 pounds in 5 weeks!

My experience with Atkins wasn't quite as bad (weight loss wise(.  I
lost 3 pounds during 2 weeks of induction, barely showed ketones and
stuck to the plan like glue, despite feeling like *#&!  Atkins totally
killed my appetite - eating became a real chore and sometimes I'd gag
while fixing dinner and end up skipping it altogether for fear of
vomiting. I think it was the fat, even though I ate less of it than
the book said I could.

I switched to SBD, still keeping my daily carbs under 30-50, but
eating less fat.  Not only do I feel better, but the weight is coming
off slightly faster (6 pounds in 3 weeks).  My dear hubby, who only
had about 15 pounds to lose, has had a similar experience. The only
downside to the change is that I do crave sweets more on the SBD and
my appetite is back - but so far I've been able to keep things under
control and haven't even ventured into the low carb "treats".  I do
have significant health problems and take meds that make weight loss
and exercise difficult.  As many people have pointed out, everyone's
body is different.  Maybe a few alterations will make a big difference
for you.
