i'm on a medication that causes me to crave sweets, constantly.  it sucks
because i had kicked my carb cravings with southbeach, until i started this
med.  has anyone else had this problem?  are there any tricks to get around
it?

If it's an AD, there are many newer ones out that don't cause
cravings. Talk to your doctor, no matter what the med is. Hopefully,
there's something you can switch to that doesn't have that side
effect.

it's an AD, nortryptaline, but i'm not taking it for depression, i'm taking
it for chronic pain and sleeping problems.  the newer ADs don't work as well
for these symptoms, unfortunately.  it sucks, because this med works really
well, but i keep having to try new drugs because of the sugar cravings.  i
keep coming back because nothing works as well as this.  so i take it i'm
stuck with the cravings?   *sigh*

That sucks. I'm taking 25 of amitriptyline for fibro. I started with
10. Those small doses don't cause me to crave. Nortriptyline and
amitriptyline are similar, you might want to switch over or even try
another tricyclic and see if it stops the craves and helps with the
pain. I know it sucks. I'd keep trying them until I found one to live
with. Get samples. :-)

How long have you been on it for any one stretch?  It may be that your body
just needs to adjust to it.

When I started an AD (for depression) all my food cravings disappeared
(yay!) but after a while (4-6 months, I think) they did come back.

I know a 4-6 month stretch of sugar cravings is not appealing, though.
Wish I had something better to offer.

Is there any chance you can switch to one that doesn't?

There are priorities in life.  A lot of time the reason you take a
medication is more important than weight loss.

In a later post you mentioned fibro.  I've read some folks who
claim their fibro got better on Atkins.  Most likely the chances
of that happening are similar on SBD.  I have no idea what the
chances are though.

i've tried a couple, but neither was as effective for me.  at this point i'm
hopeing that maybe the sweets craving will pass at some point.

SBD has helped with the IBS symptoms of fibro.  it has also helped keep my
energy levels up.  it really has helped a lot, and i recommend it to people
in my fibro group all the time.

unfortunately, it doesn't do much for sleep or pain.  :-(

A lot of LCers report that L-glutamine helps reduce cravings.

No, that's L-glutamine.

I haven't tried L-Carnitine, but L-Glutamine stops them for me, cold.
Even on REALLY stressful days like my mother's funeral, taking a
couple of grams of L-Glutamine helped me get past the cravings for
sweet 'comfort foods'.
