Liquid Splenda--more bad news

Jean B. - 30 Jan 2004 22:22 GMT Someone on one of my LC lists recently reported that lowcarber said Splenda has pulled their contracts. They are trying to import more from Japan or China. So now neither lowcarber nor naturesflavors has the products that were as close to liquid Splenda as we get in the United States.

Well, I just procrastinated about getting any, so I don't have a stockpile. :-( I gather others have written to ask about liquid Splenda in the US and have been pretty much blown off.

I received an email from Trish at www.locarber.com (the only place I knew of to get liquid Splenda here in the states). I'd asked her if my order would be placed because I only read about its unavailability after I placed my order. She told me that Splenda refused to sell any more to her, but that they couldn't keep her from selling what she already has. So, my order will go through. She also stated that she has a different web site so she can sell her overstock. If you'll email her at trishz@locarber.com, you may still be able to get your liquid Splenda. She told me that she has found an international supplier, and hopes to have that product in a month to a month and a half, depending on some fda issues. She recommends signing up for the mailing list to stay informed of availability and new items. So, all may not be lost if you act promptly. I'm looking forward to receiving mine...I've never used it, but I don't like the additional carbs I ingest simply because of the filler Splenda has to use as a bulking agent.

Thanks, Tee. I just wrote her. I use the syrup base for coffee and many other things. Unlike other types of syrups, these are free of any kind of MSG, so I prefer these (in addition to them being carb free!).

I drink a lot of tea. I mean, a LOT of tea, iced or hot. I always have, and luckily, the caffeine hasn't affected my LC WOE. I prefer the taste of sugar, but Splenda is the next best thing. I've had to cut back on my hot tea lately because I simply didn't want to consume those added carbs in the powdered Splenda (I've always used Sweet&Low in iced tea). Hopefully you'll still be able to get your liquid Splenda; if not now, perhaps when Ms. Trish is back in the Splenda business. I'd like to know why Splenda refuses to sell their liquid here in the states...quite the puzzler (please ignore that if it's been answered before...I'm relatively new here).

but since you use 3-4 Tbsps per cup of sugar being replaced, and a 4-oz squeeze bottle sells for $10 (not including shipping), it doesn't seem that great to me.

The FiberFit *sounds* okay, but even with their single serving size of 1 tsp at 1 carb gram, the grams would add up about as quickly for me as powdered Splenda. Granted, I don't use sweetener in anything except my tea (and baking, which I won't do often...too much temptation, even baking LC) . I want to avoid carbs wherever possible, which is why I'm more attracted to the zero carb solution. I'm tempted to email Trish and ask her to double my order...this stuff is nearly a black market item! I guess I'd better *try* it first, though, eh? ;)

Debbie Cusick - 31 Jan 2004 03:06 GMT I've written asking about it at least a couple times, and always get back a canned response that says "there is not market for it".
A bummer, but I buy liquid cyclamates from Canada and am happy with them. I used to get the liquid splenda back when it was imported from Brazil though, and it was good stuff.

Debbie Cusick - 31 Jan 2004 17:07 GMT I get it from www.globaldrugs.com - just search on 'sugartwin'. The product is referred to as: SUGARTWIN LIQ 200ML - and it's $3.63 US for one bottle - though since it is concentrated sweetener one bottle goes a fairly long way - though not as far as the Brazilian splenda liquid. The shipping costs are on the high side, but I usually buy a bunch of bottles which brings the cost down, as the initial cost is high for one item, but much lower for each additional. Then when I go to Canada in the summertime I always buy a bunch of bottles at the Sobey's supermarket in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and most other large Canadian supermarkets should have it too.

It is from Abbott Laboratories in Quebec:
http://abbott.com/corporate/namerica.html http://www.abbott.ca/ http://www.abbott.ca/eng/cons/alpha_con.shtml
You can't order directly from them, but I can buy it in my local Eastalta Coop. It is about $6.00 (CAD) for a 200 ml bottle. I bought it in June & I've hardly made a dent in it.
I prefer the taste of Sucaryl to SugarTwin liquid.

Debbie Cusick - 01 Feb 2004 22:24 GMT www.globaldrugs.com sells sucaryl too. I wonder what the difference between the two would be since they are both just liquid cyclamates, and I assumed the liquid is only water.

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > difference between the two would be since they are both just > liquid cyclamates, and I assumed the liquid is only water. Hmmm. Let's see here:
Sucaryl Ingredients: sodium cyclamate 100mg/ml benzoic acid methylparaben
Sugar Twin Ingredients: water sodium cyclamate 10% benzoic acid methylparaben
They are both 200 ml bottles. I bought "one of everything" when I started LCing so that I could obsess about them. :)
I just tried them "straight" from their bottles and the sugar twin has a funny front taste, and the sucaryl has a funny back taste, but I've found that when I add them to something hot, that sucaryl has the best flavour for me.
Well. That helped a lot, I'm sure. :)

Chakolate - 02 Feb 2004 17:52 GMT > Sucaryl Ingredients: > sodium cyclamate 100mg/ml [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > benzoic acid > methylparaben I may just be a worrywart, but methylparaben has recently been found to be implicated in breast cancer.
A study (sorry, I'm too lazy to go look up the cite) examined twenty breast cancer tumors and found methylparaben in every one of them. This does *not* imply a cause-and-effect relationship, and the study was small, but it does give one pause.

Recently, pit stop has also been implicated in breast cancer:
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994587 oooo...they talk about "para-hydroxybenzoic acids or parabens"
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994555 "Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen"
Oh well. Sooner or later, some moron with access to too many nukes for his own good is going to decide to teach somebody a darned good lesson, and it will all be moot, eh?
Scary, though, isn't it.

My guess is that they shut down locarber.com and Nature's Flavors to kill any competition for their liquid product. OTOH, I guess it could just be that the powdered version is more profitable for them and they just don't want any competition, period.
I must say that I am kind of skeptical of what product locarber.com would be getting from another country to replace what they have been using. Doesn't McNeil (or Merck or Johnson & Johnson) hold worldwide patents on sucralose?
Debbie Cusick - 31 Jan 2004 17:27 GMT What liquid product? They don't have any liquid product they sell to consumers, and have been shutting down people who do sell it for years now. And if you write them and ask about availability of a liquid product they reply with a canned letter saying they have no plans to produce a liquid product because "there is no market for it".

Which has made me wonder if in fact the "liquid" Splenda sold by locarber.com and others was not just some kind of concoction produced by adding water to the powder form of Spenda. Where would they get it if Spenda is not producing it???? Has anyone else considered this possibility? Kalish
Cubit - 01 Feb 2004 01:36 GMT Pure Splenda is available to food manufacturers to be used as an additive. I met a man with a business making low carb cheesecake. He said he paid $2000 for one container of Splenda. I'm not sure how much that is.

I don't know if there is such a thing as a worldwide patent. McNeil has the exclusive US distribution rights, and I think it might be Tate & Lyle in the UK.
I suspect they shut down those liquid products for being too close to plain sweetener rather than a food product made with Splenda, infringing their US rights. A previous webstore used to sell Brazilian liquid Splenda, and they shut that down.
They don't plan to make Splenda liquid in the US, because liquid sweeteners have never sold well here. In the long run, bulk/packet Splenda is suitable for most dieters and diabetics, and the liquid only serves short term dieting within near Induction limits.

Cubit - 31 Jan 2004 17:08 GMT I bought 3 bottles at the end of December. I use it liberally every few hours. In a month I have used a third of a $17.99 bottle. In the same month I could easily have used up 3 boxes of the powdered stuff at about $4.95 each.
Liquid Splenda Syrup at locarber has proved to be a great bargain! I was worried when I first bought it. $17.99 per bottle seemed like a lot.
