So there I was pottering around at work, looking busy, you know the
routeine.

I was sorting through a load of boxes, she looked at me sideways and said
"You've really lost some weight".  Nice one.

It's really encouraging when someone notices without prompting.  Happy
Tuesday to me.

It is nice! I'm glad she made your day. Wear the smile. :-)

I think women tend to comment way before men do. Its like a secret sister
bond. But when the men try to find a polite way to say you look good and
have lost weight without offending you - you know you are making a
difference!

Now that I think of it, only the women at work have said anything to
me about it.  The only men who have mentioned it are close friends,
and they knew from the beginning anyway.  One friend (a man) keeps
calling me a flat-bellied home-wrecker.  lol

Coming in way late here....

Well in terms of hearing such things from men to us "girls", I
think we've beaten that sort of behavior out of them, in the
work environment anyway.  I just asked a male colleague about
it and he said, "I'd be afraid someone'd accuse me of sexual
harrassment if I complimented them on their appearance".
The other guys in his unit agreed.

Sad.

You are exactly right. There has to be a strong relationship, lots of trust,
and carefully chosen words. Then, they are still shy about saying anything
even though they want to compliment you on your hard work and success. God
love them for being brave and trying to compliment us.

I agree.  I would never say anything like that to a woman at work.
Well, if they asked, I would say something nice, but I would never
volunteer a comment like that.

I totally agree.  I never comment on a woman's appearance, for fear of
sexual harrasment or other charges.

That's funny/sad. I work at a university (which tends to have a higher
sensitivity to harassment issues generally) with a mixture of lawyers
and economists and my experience has been that most people seem willing to
make positive comments about changes in appearance.

But, of course there was also the week when I showed up with orange hair
(I was aiming for strawberry blond), so people may figure that I'm not
overly sensitive to others noticing changes in my appearance.

Begin where you are - but don't end there.

I'm really pleased to hear that Kaye. Imagine this, last week at work
a colleague said that after my weight loss I looked "effervescent".
Admittedly, I had to look it up but when I did I was walking on air
for the rest of the day.

Best wishes, Karl.
