Low Carb Joint Pain

I've lost almost 20 pounds over the last 3 months by going
nearly zero carb on workdays (M-F) and eating more balanced
meals on weekends. I lift weights & run on a regular basis
and I've noticed that after 2 or 3 days of nearly no carbs,
my knees and shoulders hurt after workouts. This continues
through Friday, but immediately clears up on Saturday when
I eat bread for breakfast.

Any body else notice joint pain from going low carb?

What did you do to help the situation?  It's having a
negative effect on my exercise routine.

>Any body else notice joint pain from going low carb?

I noticed exactly the opposite.  My mysterious "arthritis" simply
vanished about day 4 or so, and hasn't been back in 4 years.

I have found that there is no prize for eating less than 20 carbs per
day.  Eat 20 carbs a day as the book says and you will feel a lot
better all the way around.

You answered your own question when you mentioned the bread on
Saturday.

My joint pain disappeared when I started eating low carb.  For me, it
is a sensitivity to corn products.  I have noticed when I give into an
ear of corn or two in the summer, the next day I am so stiff I have
trouble in the morning going up and down stairs.

i am not surprised,, no way can you be doing LCL.
not even close to it,, if i have your statement
"eating more balanced meals on weekends"
as communicating 'balance',, in the direction your average
nutritionists would espouse.
the 20 pound loss could simply be attributed to the lower
(than usual 4u) consumption of bread products.

>Any body else notice joint pain from going low carb?

yes,, when gaining while on maintenance,, even 1kg makes a
difference.
[currently 6' and ~152kg +  damaged joints etc ,,from hard
yakka and sport]

lost weight.

i would venture to offer,, so is your 'plan',,if it is one,

A lot of people seem to find that losing weight, by whatever method,
will help joint pain.

That's not true for me.  At 300lbs I was pretty much pain free (I know
it's hard to believe, but I was) but as my weight goes down I find my
knees, hips and back hurt. My osteopath says this is because as my
weight falls I stand and move differently, I'm favouring different
joints and I'm also pushing myself to move faster than they are
perhaps happy doing.

>What did you do to help the situation?

I went to an osteopath.  I do the stretching and balance exercises the
osteopath has prescribed, and the situation is much improved.

Hey there

I didn't really have joint pain, but I did have a minor problem with my back
Where I had thrown it out a few times, sometimes it would ache for no
apparent reason.  That hasn't bothered me hardly at all since I lost weight.

Less weight to carry, less strain on those bones!

Smoking joints should not be painful.  I can't imagine Low carb has anything
to do with this.  All I can suggest is that you be careful not to put the
lit end in your mouth.  This may take care of the problem.

to prevent this while LC'ing?    thanks for any info!   bj

I see some humor in your talking toe.  However, I made enough fun here.

I have seen anecdotes attributing leg pains to a lack of potassium.

If you are serious, you might want to start a new thread or do some Google
research.

Cherry juice won't help gout (maybe you're thinking cranberry juice
for urinary tract?). Uric acid initially rises on LC then goes back
down. Drink plenty of water and avoid foods with purines (organ meats,
especially). I'm sure you can find a list of foods to avoid with
Google. Take an NSAID like Aleve for pain. If the problem persists,
see your doc (I wouldn't mention LC, tho). There are stronger meds
that will help. The problem should resolve by itself in a week or so.

Bear,

Hop over to http://www.thedutchkettle.com and order their black cherry
juice concentrate.  Read the directions and use sparingly.  Watch your
other caloric intake and carbohydrates while drinking the juice and
you should be able to help the gout while continuing to lose.   I use
this when my big toes begin talking to me and it shuts them up.  YMMV
but the juice helps to reduce my uric acid levels and works on my gout
attacks.

I don't know if this is gout or not. Only 1 big toe joint hurts. hurts more
with more activity. I wonder why cherry juice helps

Your doctor can do a blood test to see what your uric acid levels are.
But, the definitive test is to have them test a sample of the fluid in
the joint (major owie).  However, if you ever get a full blown gout
attack in that toe there won't be much doubt about what it is.  It
will feel so bad that the thought of cutting it off to relieve the
pain will not seem unreasonable at the time.

I thought so- I think I just have an "itis" of some sort.  I think the test
would hurt more than the ailment.

if the pain in your toe continues, have you doctor check your URIC
ACID!

i went by my local health food store, where all the people there are very
knowledgeable about things these days. i told them of my impending bout of
gout, and that i wanted to head it off before it got any worse. the woman there
suggested "cherry fruit extract" in a capsule form.  so i took a few of those,
and now a few every day, and it seems to be fading away. taking the capsules
and giving some time for the LC'ing to stablize seems to have helped.

If you get all of your nutritional advice from a healthfood store
clerk, you will die early and broke.

If you want good advice about gout, ask a podiatrist (not a GP).

I know that you can get a pill from your doctor that will clear it
right up.

Keep in mind that the absense of carbs can result in a suppressed immune
system.  Further, very low levels of carbs will also hinder nutrients into
cells.

My guess is that for you, being nearly zero carb combined with your
workouts, you're recovery is being hindered.  I would suggest that your
solution is to raise your carb level through the week and maintain that
level on the weekend.

There is no need for you to keep the carb levels at nearly zero.  Why not
move them up to 40 g per day or so and see how that works?

BTW, I weight train 3X per week and I only notice what I call "joint
discomfort" after heavy workouts.  I'm back to normal before the next
workout.

You might also try something other than running for your cardio. It's pretty
high impact.

Yes,  my knees have been giving me trouble as soon as I started LC.  I first
attributed it to lack of Potassium and began taking supplements.  Knees
improved.

Then I started weight training, i.e, squats, lunges, plie squats, etc. . . .
and the knee pain returned.  I then started taking glucosamine and MSM
(methylsulfonlymethane), knees improved again.

Now whenever I forget to take my supplements my knees ache again for a day
or two.  As they are now, hopefully they will clear up.

I've been taking MSM since I started Atkins last June and I think it's made a
difference in joint pain.

I didn't feel pain, but my hip joints felt strange for a few weeks at
the beginning.  They felt sort of loose.  Now that I think about it,
other joints felt that way too.  Now everything feels normal.

OMG!  I read this and realized that my hip joints haven't hurt after getting up
from sitting for a while in, well, QUITE a while!  Thank GOD!  I was beginning to
think hip replacement would be in my relatively near (like 10-15 years) future!

I too have noticed as soon as I cut out everything but natural food (meat
and fresh veggies) my joint pain magically disappeared. I also started on a
full vitamin as well. Maybe that could play a role
