Shopping in the US

Now I've been in Davis California over a week, and I've been hunting for
natural food. I quickly became aware that despite there being so many
choices of everything on the shelves, most of them are artificial or
"modified" crap (and teh shelves are stressing to look at, because
everything is lines up and extremely colourful and messy on the
packaging). It was difficult to find heavy cream which only has one
ingredient: Cream!. I finally found it in the Co-Op (Brand is Clover),
which became my new favourite store. They also have the type of milk I
use at home: Organic, Pasteurized (not ultra), but not homogenized.
The nearest grocery is Ray's Food Place. They have some good butter,
called Challenge. I was surprised to see their peanutbutter section -
they have some even cleaner stuff than I get in DK - the only
ingredients are organic peanuts and salt. In DK they add sugar and palm
oil. They also have almond butter, which I cant get in DK, but it was
like 13$ so I just went for the peanut butter, which was 2,4$.
Also the bread is really weird, it must be easy to stay away from bread
in this country. I had been warned by Danes staying in otehr parts of
the US that the bread and coffee sucks. I found that you can get good
coffee here, but the bread is like a sponge! Except at the co-op they
have some real bread. I haven't seen a decent bakery yet, so staying
away from cake should also be easy.
Another thing (the first being unsweetened peanut butter) I love about
it here is that meat and romaine lettuce is half price of DK! Hehe, and
Ray's have "Danish Squash" - I've never seen them in my life!
Ooh, and Californian wine is also half price!

<Laughing>  It's fun to see something so familiar through eyes
unaccustomed to it.  I never really thought about it, but American
packaging is very visually active.  Advertising here is practically a
science, designed to grab hold of the eyes and empty the wallet.
I hope you find more things to enjoy.

Take care,
Carmen
PS If the packaging is stressing the television must be enough to
induce a panic attack!

THIRTEEN dollars for almond butter?

that's completely insane.

if you can find a trader joe's, check them out.  their prices are much
better than what you'll find at almost any 'health food' store.

hmmmm ..... I take salted peanuts out of the can and run them through my
food processor with the chopping blade .... makes perfect peanut butter ...
if you want it even more smooth .... add a small amout of safflower oil ...
can't get any more natural then that .... and low carb

I found ih the Co-op that they have one that is only 0.39$ per oz
instead of the otehr one that was 0.84$ per oz. The cheap one is "Kettle
- Handcrafted Crunchy Almond Butter"- contains only almonds and a little
salt. The expensive one was Maranatha Organic almond butter.

You're close to the heart of the American artisan bread movement. Berkeley,
CA. There is plenty of good bread here. It's not called Wonder or Rainbo or
anything like that though. And it's very hard to stay away from. Especially
here in the Bay Area. Some of the worlds best bread. Oh well. Bread may be
in my distant future but not any time soon. Unless it's LC of course. Good
luck. I assume your in Davis at UC? Oh, Trader Joes has good european
butter. Plugra for one.

Today I went shopping in The Co-Op and found something called Organic
WAlnut Bread from Bay-Bread. That is really good! And they had a sale on
Artesa Syrah 2000 which is really good. Straus organic whole milk (not
homogenized), Clover 100% natural cream, organic brown rice, and Straus
icecream (no Sea Weed or Gum). Ready for a real naughty carb-fest.

I'm a Visiting Exchange Scholar at UC Davis BAESIL department.

How long are you going to be at Davis?  Just happens to be my
employer!  I'm a native to the region, and you may know me from
rfc (heard of a tradition there called WWT?  I'm the "T"!)

If I can be of help to you locating things, send me an email.

No Trader Joes in Davis (yet).  Nearest is in Sacramento.
But you're spot-on about Berkeley and this presumably
J-1 Scholar can just hop himself a train at the Davis
station and be in Berkeley in pretty short order.  And
while there, go to the Cheese Board (YUM!) and also
The Spanish Table, one of my very favorite foodie places.
Olive oil sooooooooooo good, and manchego cheese, and that
delicious Spanish ham (name escapes me), and smoked paprika.
Oh my, I feel faint ;-)
