Carol Ann - 28 Feb 2004 13:37 GMT February is almost over! Where did the time go?????
For March, I will continue to try and update weekly.
Remember, it is no longer a 5lb Monthly Challenge. It's a Monthly Challenge where *YOU* determine what your goal will be.
So, be sure to look at what is realistically attainable and set your goal. Go to www.lowcarblosers.com to see which stats I need.
I would like to thank you all for your patience with me in doing the updates, too!! I'm not sure if you all know, I'm at 37 weeks pregnant, so my time spent on the computer is not what it used to be.
Rest assured I am updating! Just keep posting!! Discuss how you are doing. Ask for help here! Whatever you do, do NOT quit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, what are your finals for February and your goals for March??????????

Good morning Carol Ann. Quite a few of us, I suspect, know that you are well on your way into your pregnancy. I was starting to worry about you as I had not seen you post in a while.
I will finish out the month at 193 pounds, down from 201 at the start, for a total of 8 pounds lost for the month. My goal was 6 pounds.
I had a personal goal of reaching 195 by my 21st wedding anniversary--which was yesterday but we are celebrating with friends tonight at a seafood restaurant--which I was able to achieve and find gratifying. My wife also continues to do well, at 50+ pounds lost herself with about 15-20 more to go.
I will sign up for another 6 pounds in March, target 187 by the end of the month.

TayaFaire - 01 Mar 2004 02:37 GMT Carol Ann, Hope all is going well with you and the baby, bet you are getting more excited about the baby every day! I haven't been online much, well, not online reading the newsgroups, etc. Planning a wedding is all time consuming, so it seems. I'm happy to see so many losers for February! Way to go gang!
It's that TOM for me. No loss, no gain to show for February. But I should be down at least a few pounds in a few days. So that will give me a jump on March's challenge. Kinda nice how that worked out. LOL

Phil S. - 28 Feb 2004 17:29 GMT Hi Carol Ann,
Well February wound up being a pretty lousy month for me, and not just because I didn't even come close to making my goal. My grandma was in the hospital most of the month, and passed away yesterday morning. Needless to say with all the time spent at the hospital, there wasn't much time for working out and staying on plan there was next to impossible. But I want to try and get back on it next month. The good news, if anything, is that at least I didn't gain much, it was almost like being in maintenance for a month really.

I have been trying for over 2 weeks to get back to where I was at 173, ever since I drank some barium to have a look at my esophagus (nothing was wrong), but my weight went up 5 pounds and it is sure hard to lose! But after over 2 and a half years I know that it will all come off eventually. I'll be happy to get back to 173 in March.

This is due to dehydration - I always do this when I'm ill, and it always comes back. Yes, I am drinking my water, but I am also single-nosedly supporting the stock price of facial tissues. And ... we won't discuss the sweating.

> > So, what are your finals for February and your goals for March?????????? I missed goal this month. I seem to be stalled at 206.5. As most of you know my mom passed away 2 weeks ago. I haven't been able to exercise and although not carbing out, certainly not as strict as I used to be. Please put me in on the March challenge for 5 lbs and I will see if I can't get this back on track for me.
Thanks again Carol Ann and all of you for your wishes of sympathy!

Ugh. I've spent the last week at 212, with nary a flicker of the scale. So I didn't quite make my five pound goal for the month. However, I have not yet accepted that my loss is going to be slower than 5 pounds a month. I lost more like 6-7 a month on weight watchers a few years ago. For that reason I am setting another five pound goal for March. I won't accept that I can only lose 4 pounds a month! I will work harder.
here are the numbers: started 12/1/03 237/212/March goal 207/final goal unknown
Thanks again for running the challenge!

DigitalVinyl - 01 Mar 2004 13:29 GMT Final February weight= 325, past goal. 13 lbs total
350/325/200
This month I'm upping carbs to find CCLL so my weight may slow. I also plan to celebrate towards the end of the month by tasting an actual piece of cake at a birthday party.
March goal, 10 lbs, 315. That's what I weighed 20 years ago at the age of 18.

Even though it's the opposite of what is obvious. T3 thyroid throttling from staying too low stops happeneing at CCLL yet it's still low enough to stay in ketosis.

That's what I'm hoping to prove out , but part of finding CCLL is reaching a point(a week) where you don't lose anymore. Assuming I hit that week during the month I will likely show a lower rate for the month. Otherwise I'd be shooting for 13 lbs for the month. It sounds like that on the surface because of Dr A's poor writing skills and his late sell-out to profit from bars. The entire point of CCLL is it is the *ideal* level for loss. As in it gives the best loss rate. That's the single most important concept in all of Atkins that each individual has a level that gives their best loss and less isn't more.
Below the level that kicks you out of ketosis, at CCLL, in ketosis, at the best loss rate and fewest stalls. Above the level that kicks you out of ketosis, above CCLL, out of ketosis, at a level that may completely shut off loss or may case much slower loss. The word "Critical" in critical carbohydrate level of loss is the key here. Critical points are where a very small change in one thing (carb intake) cause a very large change in something else (loss rate) while farther from the critical point there is far less change going out in either direction. This is the key meaning of the word "critical" and why it was selected back in the 1970s to describe the Atkins process. It's an engineering useage and I've always been surprised that Dr A chose to use an engineering term back in the 1970s. It's the same use of critical as the critical frequency of winds that knocked down the first Galloping Girdy, the first Tacoma Narrows bridge.
CCLL is not the point of least loss, it is the point of best loss. CCLL is also the point where lose drops *very* kickly as you go above it.
> Assuming I hit > that week during the month I will likely show a lower rate for the > month. Otherwise I'd be shooting for 13 lbs for the month. Anything over 2 per week 8-9 per months is ultra-fast. Many folks with over 100 to lose often lose at such extreme rates. Go under 100 to lose and the rate will very likely drop off towards the ideal rate of 4 per month. More to lose, faster to lose it, less to lose, slower to lose it. It's the leptin feedback loop at the level above the insulin/glucagon feedback loop.
DigitalVinyl - 03 Mar 2004 20:28 GMT >> > > This month I'm upping carbs to find CCLL so my weight may slow. >> [quoted text clipped - 32 lines] >CCLL is also the point where lose drops *very* kickly as you go >above it. It is not that important, but I don't believe Atkin's meant it that way. His descriptions in DANDR(1999) are very specific and clear. I doubt he used Critical for the reasoning you cite. CCLL (someone should have told him that acronym/term just sucked!) should have more directly been called a Maximum Carb for OWL. Your definition, is a number Atkin's doesn't seem to I.D., BUT I AM FAR MORE INTERESTED IN KNOWING! (Which, btw, I would consider an Optimal-CLL, and below your CCLL).
Atkin's says CCLL is a maximum # of carbs while still losing(not maximum or best lost). Your definition also confuses how CCLL acts as a lower range for Maintenance. If it I Lose best at CCLL my maintenace should NOT start with this number but some number an unknown count of carbs above this. Atkins says maintenance is defined by CCLL(as low) to CCLM (as high). WIth CCLM being a point where above you gain, CCLL-below you lose--they act as borders not optimal peaks. This makes more sense (and is simpler) for long term understanding of weight maintenance. But, again, the number you are pointing to--the maximum # of carbs with optimal weight loss is what we all should want to find during OWL for the best results. Unfortunately, Atkins didn't discuss that(at least not in the 1999 DANDR). He simply says to drop below your CCLL to resume weight lose after finding CCLL. He leaves the "drop to what" question up to the user, depending how how fast you want to lose weight.

I'm still 125 over so that is where I am. I won't know where the loss slows for me until after it happens for me. The formula I'm using to estimate rate says I drop below 100(over) first week of May.

[quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > It is not that important, but I don't believe Atkin's meant it that > way. His descriptions in DANDR(1999) are very specific and clear. It's clear in the 1972 edition and hasn't been since in my opinion. I don't think he switched from ketosis to loss between 1972 and 1993. I think he switched his description not the process. The reason for my stance is all of those people who stall at 20 but lose fine higher. If it was loss not ketosis, Atkins would fail for everyone in that situation and there are many. Hardly a day goes by on this newsgroup without someone posting they are 6+ weeks into Induction and they haven't lost since day 14. There's also the problem that the time scale for loss is month to month while the time scale for ketosis is week to week.
> I doubt he used Critical for the reasoning you cite. CCLL (someone > should have told him that acronym/term just sucked!) should have more > directly been called a Maximum Carb for OWL. Actually in his book Doctor Atkins Age Defying Diet he experimented with the word "ideal" for the same number. And he used yet another acronym for it in Atkins for Life. So he was aware it needed work.
> Your definition, is a > number Atkin's doesn't seem to I.D., BUT I AM FAR MORE INTERESTED IN > KNOWING! (Which, btw, I would consider an Optimal-CLL, and below your > CCLL). See the 1972 book for a discussion that uses ketosis exclusively as I still do.
> Atkin's says CCLL is a maximum # of carbs while still losing(not > maximum or best lost). Your definition also confuses how CCLL acts as > a lower range for Maintenance. If it I Lose best at CCLL my maintenace > should NOT start with this number but some number an unknown count of > carbs above this. Atkins says maintenance is defined by CCLL(as low) > to CCLM (as high). Good point but you're pretty deep into the details. If you get kicked out of ketosis at 50, is 45 your CCLL or is 50? Chances are 45 gives your best loss, but that 50 becomes your maintenance minimum.
Similarly CCLM is a "critical" range in that below CCLM folks don't gain anywhere between CCLL (or CCLL+5 as you mention) and CCLM, but then hit CCLM and boom gain turns on. Small change in one thing, big change in another.
> WIth CCLM being a point where above you gain, > CCLL-below you lose--they act as borders not optimal peaks. Yes and no.
Above CCLM and start to gain so it is a border. But many folks stay on the plan better if they are higher in carb intake. Its optimal not in loss because maintenance isn't about loss but in endurance since maintenance is about endurance.
Below CCLL most of the difference in rates isn't week to week, it's stalls. Staying lower generates more stalls. Near CCLL there are fewer stalls. It's that metabolic loophole. Enough carbs to keep T3 thyroid high to keep BMR high. Low enough carbs to keep insulin low to keep ketosis turned on.
> This makes > more sense (and is simpler) for long term understanding of weight > maintenance. Right, but it is far from obvious on the surface that more carbs should be better, so there is very much resistance to the idea on the street. Yet more carbs being better is the core of the 4-phase process. Atkins is NOT obvious.
> But, again, the number you are pointing to--the maximum # > of carbs with optimal weight loss is what we all should want to find > during OWL for the best results. Unfortunately, Atkins didn't discuss > that(at least not in the 1999 DANDR). He did in 1972.
> >Anything over 2 per week 8-9 per months is ultra-fast. Many folks > >with over 100 to lose often lose at such extreme rates. > > I'm still 125 over so that is where I am. So you're officially qualified to stay low if you choose. The thing is many with less to lose stall by staying low, but few with a lot to lose stall by staying low. It's the leptin feedback loop at work.
> I won't know where the loss > slows for me until after it happens for me. Atkins is a process not a menu!

Where did the time go????? > [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] > Low Carb shopping: > http://www.lowcarblosers.com/#stores February was a humbling month. I had begun to feel that I was the one in charge of my body and this month my body said otherwise. All month I have been bouncing between 255-251. Just today I finally dipped below this. Up til now, I did what I was supposed to do and I lost weight, often and easily. This month did everything right and nothing helped. On the plus side, I learned that that setback did not break my spirit or determinism (like so many diets in the past). On the minus side, I've learned that I don't tend to ask for help when things aren't going well.
Anyway I ended up at 250.5 For March put me down for a humble 4 lbs.

My weight is holding at 169. Actually, it bounced up and down for the last 2 weeks, but today it IS back to 169, so I met my goal plus 1 lb!
I've decided not to join the March challenge, though. I find that putting myself on a timetable is a little stressful, knowing that I have to account for it. I'm more likely to not eat ENOUGH food or otherwise change my behavior just to make the goal, and I don't want to do that. It happens as it happens and it's enough for me to put it in my sig. Thank you for doing such a GREAT job, though!
