I was wondering if people could think of something that keeps them going and
not falling into their old ways?
Mine is this...if I have a bad day.... you know, at a party and ate like an
idiot, that doesn't mean the diet is over. It just means I had an off day.
I try to get my mind in a much longer term way of thinking. Now, I do
things that I know will not be good for my diet. For example, I signed up
for a beer and cheese class at a local bar. I have been doing these for
years and I really enjoy them. I have not missed one yet and don't plan on
it. There was a time that I would have gone to a beer school and then that
would be the beginning of the end of my low carb diet. Now, I just say so
what, I am in this for the long haul and one day means nothing to me. I
took a couple of weeks off over the holidays and I am fine. It wasn't the
end, it just was a little hiccup looking at the big picture. Not looking at
this as a crash diet has been a really big help to me.
What are some of your ways of looking at things that would help you keep
going?

Curt, can I ask how old you are? In some ways you impress me as relatively
young, but you're gift of looking at the larger picture is impressive. When
I was in my 20's I couldn't see past next week. Just wondering.

I am 38, so a long way from my 20's. I probably sound young and foolish
though. I do live a very young lifestyle if there is such a thing. I mean,
I have been single all my life and just live kind of like by the seat of my
paints.

Someone on my forum claimed to have gained 30 lbs in 3 months eating
800-1000 calories/day.
In the FFID universe, 800 cal can magically cause weight gain.

I agree. When I look in the mirror, I see myself as thinner than I look to other
people. I know there are others who look in the mirror and see themselves
HEAVIER than they really are. A photograph tells the proper story, at least to
ME.

Yup nothing like a photograph to put thing in perspective.
I'll see one and think wow I can not possibly look like this in "real
life" so I show it and expect the person to be astonished at how many
pounds the camera added.....I wait, and what do I get? "wow thats a
good picture of you." ahhhhhhrrrggghhhh :)

That's easy. My husband losing twice as fast as I am. THAT keeps me from
falling off the wagon. I do NOT want to weigh more than him! LOL

My new clothes. I throw out my old ones that are too big, and I never ever
want to have to go shopping to buy bigger clothes again. I hate spending
money. I don't hate it as much if it's for _smaller_ clothes, but the
thought of having to go out and buy a bigger wardrobe all over again would
really piss me off.

Yup, yup - that's one of my biggest motivations as well, and was my primary
one at the beginning too. I haven't given up all my 'fat' clothes yet, but
I plan to (I just haven't gotten around to getting them in the truck to take
to Goodwill - they are at least all boxed up though. I feel the same - I
don't mind buying smaller clothes at all, but darned if I'm going to buy
bigger ones again.
Another motivation I use - I printed out a 'before' pic of myself (from
Christmas a couple of years ago), and pinned it to the bulletin board at my
desk. Any temptation that comes along during the day, all I have to do is
look over at that pic to remind myself that _nothing_ anyone can offer me to
eat is worth going back to looking like that. It's also good positive
reinforcement when people (who didn't know me before) see it and say,
"wow...that was you?".

am amazed how positive I feel about being a lc eater and rapted to
find this forum.
I too will lose the plot every now and then and then will relish the
thought of eating sensibly again andknowing I can do it!!!!
Think this will be my outlook now! Good luck and have a beer and some
great cheese for me!! I live in wine country, so will enjoy a glass

I didn't see this until now, but thanks! I'm really pleased with my

I have done alot of inner healing. I am now working on outer. During
meditation, I imagine what it is I want to become.

The weight loss is now just a bonus for me. I lost my acne (3
decades), insomnia (all my life) and heartburn. If I were to eat high
carbs, I'm afraid of the insomnia. In my pre-lc days, I used to go to
bed tired and lie awake trying to fall asleep. Then once or twice a
week I'd wake up at 3 or 4 a.m. and lie around till I'd fall asleep at
7 a.m. or go to work looking like Keith Richards.
If I cheat I may or may not gain weight and certainly not immediately,
but these other health problems would hit me right away. Instant
feedback! So that keeps me going.
I went low carb to lose the weight but found my health got better and
now I'm hooked.
