I am having an ongoing problem that I have to believe is related to my
low carb way of life. I'm experiencing numbness in my hands, feet, and
face. My right eye even feels lazy. My doctor and optometrist have
checked me (as appropriate for their specialties) from head to foot. I
have had TWO complete blood tests. Their opinion? I'm as healthy as any
patient they have. My doctor is actually stunned by my blood tests.
You may recall from my previous posts that he is also a friend who
convinced me to go on LC in the first place. I went on LC January 2003
and lost 30 pounds over the next six months and have not only stalled
but have gained about 4 pounds back. If I try to eat more than 20 grams
of carbs a day, I gain weight. So, I have been on 20 grams a day for
over a year. I am increasingly becoming convinced that my health issues
are related to LC.
Therefore, my question is, has anyone had any success getting input from
the Atkins Center on such matters? If I find out that these problems are
related, I am going to become a major critic of this WOL. While in one
respect I hope they are not related (it's the only "diet" that has ever
worked for me -- I am 12 pounds below the lowest weight I thought I
would EVER see again), these health things are horrible. None of the
suggestions here has lead to any solutions, so apparently no one else
here is having the problem (or else the diabetics are seeing similar
problems with neuropathy and attributing them to the diabetes.) Let me
repeat, my blood tests confirm that I do not have diabetes. I'm 50.
Any input?

Are you exercising? The reason I ask is it gets the blood flowing and
should help with numbness, IMHO. Exercise generally helps most everything.
How about water intake? Are you drinking enough water? That is all I can
say. You could do a search on goggle to see if there is anything out there.
Maybe see another doctor for a second opinion. Congratulations on your
weight loss. I can't imagine you are not healthier now than before the
weight loss.

Your next doctor visit should be to a neurologist. I am surprised your other
doctors did not suggest that. You will probably need a referral from your
primary doctor.

I would be heading to see a neurologist and/or and opthalmologist. I
can't think of any reason that lc eating would cause symptoms unless
it is a reaction to some food or additive. I can think of several
causes for the numbness, though, and recommend that you see someone
else.

The Atkins Center is not a source of medical information nor is it staffed
by doctors.
The only diet related issue I can think of is B vitamin deficiency. Are you
supplementing with B6, B12 and folic acid? These are important for nerve
conduction and come mostly from grain.
If you are supplementing with these important vitamins, you really do need
to see a neurologist and quickly. The numbness pattern you describe would
not suggest diabetic neuropathy even if you had high blood sugars.

Sounds like you want to blame LC for any ailment you have. I doubt
that LC has caused this problem. Nevertheless, go off your LC and see
if the symptoms disappear.
Seriously, I'd have a MRI scan, specifically for tumors in the
brain.

That's the first time you've made any sense. Congratulations.

Someone on my forum claimed to have gained 30 lbs in 3 months eating
800-1000 calories/day.
In the FFID universe, 800 cal can magically cause weight gain.
