No.  Most people experiece a distinct improvemet in mental and emotional
outlook.  Many are able to get off of antidepressants fcor depression and
off SSRI's for panic, attacks.  The low-carb diet has been prescribed for
over a century for mental health, especially for hyperactivity in children
and for certain mainic-depressive disorders.  You can easily research this
on the internet.

OTOH, the benefits of low-carb don't occur overnight.  It generally takes
about 90 days to see the physical  benefits such as lower cholesterol,
triglycerides and blood pressure, so I assume that it would be the same for
the positive effects on mind and emotions to take hold.

I go through periods of being cranky.  Is it normal?  It is a mood, so sure
it is normal.  Does it happen on low carb?  Of course, everyone is cranky
now and again.  I sometimes feel cranky, because I don't want to think about
what I am eating all the time.  I mean, I want cake, beer and pizza, but I
can' have it.  That can make me a little cranky at times.  No big deal, it
will pass.  I usually feel better when I stay on the diet and get through
it.  It seems to make me stronger.

The two people I know who tried the South Beach Diet said they felt
very cranky - because they felt hungry and deprived.  None of the 5
people I know who are doing Atkins mentioned feeling cranky - but
almost all of them (and me) had headaches the first week - partly due
to caffeine withdrawal, no doubt.

Yep on the caffeine withdrawl. I am doing Atkins. I used to be cranky
big time before the diet. Took Xanax and Wellbutrin for depression and
anxiety. I no longer need them. My moods have stablilized. I am a
easier person to live with. I can handle myself and thoughts when
alone now.

I have heard the same with the South Beach Diet.  Hungry and deprived,
what a horrible feeling.
