I grew up in NYC, and we were always proud to have tap water that was among
the cleanest and most drinkable in the country. Despite my pride, though, I
didn't fully appreciate it until I spent significant amounts of time
elsewhere. The worst thing from a drinkability perspective (in my opinion)
is soft water. It tastes slimy and vile.

Must be the plumbing.
For those whose tap water is icky, I recommend trying one of the filter
products like Brita or Pur. I use a Brita tank; it holds more than a gallon
and does make the water taste delicious. There is a capital outlay - some
small cost for the tank and $4 every other month or so for the filters (how
long they last depends upon how frequently you refill it) - but in the end
it's far cheaper than bottled water and really makes a huge difference in
taste.
Also drinking water cold can mask some nasty tastes.
