Tonight I bought some low carb tortillas to go with dinner and when it came
time to eat, I didn't want any. It's like the bread I bought. It's been
sitting there for a week +. I had one slice. It just has no appeal. It
sounds good in the store but when it comes time for the meal I'm just not
interested. The Hebrew National kosher dogs were good though. And only 1
carb each.

They don't taste that good, IMHO.  Low carb breads suck, pretty much.

I found some I could tolerate, but I can't say that I actually prefer
them to the real thing.

There is a low carb bread we have found that isn't too bad.  It is "Country
Kitchen" whole wheat low carb bread.   I get it in Walmart and also in
Hannaford markets.   That and the Wasa crackers are our only breads.

I can. Especically when the real thing leads back down the road to weight
regain by stimulating cravings and alternatives don't.  LC breads like
Sami's are just great.

Mmmm. Hotdogs. DH brought home some Nathan's that are all beef and 1
carb. I, too, have tortillas wasting in the fridge and more in the
freezer. Maybe someday they will be appealing or you will come up with
a wonderful dish for us to try.

Wonder if there is ANY way we could fake King Ranch Chicken with those LC
'tillas?  I LOVE King Ranch Chicken.  Let's see....the ingredients are .....

Embrace that feeling and love it to death! Oh - and could you send
some of it this way? The day I don't want bread I will know I have
conquered the mountain. It's a slow climb - but I feel it coming.

Just so as not to waste the rest of the tortillas, try heating them
(toasting, actually) in a frying pan with just a little bit of olive
oil. My wife does that and they seem to come out more nearly edible.

Then maybe wrap it around one of those hotdogs with some good
baseball-park type yellow mustard.

Oops. You may want to hold off on that thanks. I just read some of
today's batch of followups and realize that you didn't mention a brand.
We use Tortilla Factory (Herb and Garlic variant), which tastes fairly
not bad right out of the package. If you've got something soy-based all
bets are off.

LOL... Just this morning I threw away half a package of LC tortillas that
have been sitting in my freezer for months. They had absolutely no appeal,
and I got tired of looking at them. No more of the low-carb fake foods for
me (actually, I had no problem with the taste - I just don't want all the
processed "stuff" any more).

Bear I have done that a few times.  The taste is bitter due to the soy.   I
spent $3.50 or so for a loaf of Atkins bread and it was just not tasty.   I
have thrown out two loaves and a bag of Atkins bagels too.

I find I still like my Wasa crackers best, because they are real, whole
grain, low carb, high fiber and they taste the best.   I like the sourdough
rye ones the best.

I haven't tried Wasa crackers, but I can recommend Cheeter's Low Carb
crackers.  They are harder than I'd prefer, but after 9 months of not
eating a high-carb cracker, they were a welcome addition to my diet.  I
smear some cream cheese on them and then spread just a tiny spoonful of
black caviar on top.  Delicious decadence.

My sister-in-law gave me a few boxes that she found in a store in Nassau
County, NY.  But I couldn't find any in the stores I frequent in
Manhattan, so I ordered them from Netrition.com.

Winn-Dixie carries some great new low carb, only 3g net carbs per,
tortillas called the La Tortilla Factory.  They come in flavors, my
favorite if garlic herb, and the are a lot better than Atkins
tortillas they aren't dry and bitter.  They're great for sandwiches,
mini-pizzas(my fav) and lots of other stuff.  I find I usually prefer
other low carb brand breads and things to Atkins.

I am beginning to agree with you on that.   But the catch is that in recent
tests only the Atkins products were absolutely on the money as for the
actual carbs in them vs. the labels.

I tried the Atkins Advantage vanilla shakes and they were twice as big (but
more watery )as the Advant-Edge ones and the Advant-Edge tasted better and
were thicker.

Hey Evelyn-
I was wondering about those bagels. Too bad. I like the idea of the Wasa. I
didn't know they mad a sourdough rye. That sounds good. I'll give them a
try. Thanks

I dont use too many packaged  LC products as they tend to
sabatoge this WOE- but a dear friend gave me a "basket"
of LC products as a present recently ( nice idea ) -

the kick of this - I put the LC bread & tortillas out for the
birds to eat and they WOULD NOT eat  them! -

Not sure - but probably because the base of many low-carb breads is
soya. Birds just ain't into it.

Almost all the so called low carb breads I have tasted look perfectly like a
normal loaf of bread but they tasted bitter and unpalatable.  I am sure it
is the soy.   I find anything containing soy flour to be bitter and nasty
tasting.

You'll thank me. :-)   They are really good, but you still have to watch the
carbs and not go crazy with them.   I think they are 7 grams of carb and you
get to deduct the fiber, so they are really low.

I don't particularly care for the other kinds, especially the one they call
"fiber rye" which nearly could break your teeth trying to chew it, but the
sourdough rye tastes like a good rye bread does.    I used them for a diet
crutch for years, but now with the low carb diets being all the rage they
are getting hard to find.

My usual source is in the grocery store near the melba toast, but when they
are cleaned out (often these days) I get them from the german pork store, a
place which is no longer a no-no for me since I am on this diet.   Homemade
german liverwurst and cold cuts, delicious ground lamb patties (great for
lunch or dinner on the foreman grill) and hot dogs and kilbasy to die
for.....

Mmmm... I like Wasa too. And Ak-mak (though they do contain honey). And
lately I've been buying that round crisp-bread - I don't remember the
name and I don't have any left to look at the label, but I think they're
Swedish or Danish? They come in big "wheels" - a big round, flat cracker
with a hole in the middle. Yummy!

Maybe you're losing your taste for bread. I'm "gradually" low-carbing,
but now I find that the moment I think of a sandwich, I think of a
sandwich wrapped in lettuce - or between two Portabella mushrooms - I
can't imagine doing it any other way!!

Dinner last night was chicken with roasted mushrooms. Fiance ate
potatoes. I didn't even want the potatoes... I was picking the
mushrooms off his plate!
