I just heard a commercial on talk radio for an Eyewitness News
report for tonight.  It want something like 'forget the low carb fad
for losing weight, learn why a HIGH carb diet is right for you?'
Something like that anyway.

I don't get network TV.  I hope someone here will watch it and
report back.

I wonder who is behind the report ... the bread industry, the potato
or corn farmers... ?  Feh.

It may be the new study from MIT that CNN was reporting on this morning. It
says high carb foods eaten without any protein cause people to have a higher
level of mood enhancing chemicals.such as serotonin. They said if you eat ANY
protein with or near the time you eat the carbs it doesn't work. If they had
just asked any women who had ever eaten chocolate when she was depressed they
could have saved the cost of the study. Now I just eat low carb chocolate.

When asked Dr Gupta said he thought the benefits of high carb on your mood were
balanced out by the good feeling you get with the weight loss you'll get on low
carb. LOL

I used to eat very low fat and I can honestly say that high carb causes
depression.  After all that sugar rushes through your blood, you'll crash
and become depressed.  I'm way less depressed and have a much better mood
now than I did on low fat.

Have you ever read the Bob Arnot book (Dr. Bob Arnot's Revolutionary
Weight Control Program - 1997)?  I am new here (but not to Usenet) so I
don't know how much that book has been discussed.  But he delves
extensively into the relationship of depression, serotonin levels,
glycemic index and high/low carb.  It's truly fascinating.

I am new to low carbing--- hello all.  :)  Informative group!

Ah.  MIT.  Let's see... did this come out of the Brain and Cog Sci dept?
These would be the pushers who did Phen/Fen awhile back, headed by a
woman who so hates fat people that she can't help herself and must make
comments when seing one.

Sorry - just a little personal experience talking here.

According to the write-up they let people eat high carb foods until
they were full.  Those high carb foods include whole wheat items.
Uhmm, I never in my life remember stopping once I took a bite of
wheat containing food.  Chuckle, so much for it working for me!

I've read a fair amount about serotonin and melatonin and carb
intake recently.  They seem to have very long term impact on something.
Must read more ...

I investigated this and the only Eyewitness News program I could find is
WBNS, a NBC station located in Columbus, OH. Its's on channel ten in
that area. Don't know if it's national or not. Here is the link:
http://www.10tv.com It messes with my Webtv when I try to access it.
Hoping someone has better luck; Marty

It's probably about this University of Arkansas Study - I found these on an
"Eyewitness News" station (ABC affiliate) in the Raleigh/Durham area:

http://www.abclocal.go.com/wtvd/health/022004_NH_highcarbdiets.html
http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/news/012604_APnatl_weightlossstudy.html

But here's an article that's a rebuttal:

It is clear that this 'study' didn't even bother to evaluate the
reaction of insulin resistant individuals to the high carb diet.
Even with the calorie restriction percentage that was used individuals
like myself would gain fat.  The statement that low carb has no proof
to back it up is pure drivel.  These jokers actually think people are
stupid enough to believe that cutting out starch from your diet is bad
for you (BTW, this is not equivalent to increasing fat and meat
consumption by a similar number of calories; in fact low carb lets you
reduce caloric intake without any hunger).  I am happy with my average
weight loss of 2.5 pounds per week and the fact that it took 12 weeks
for the test subjects to lose less than 10 pounds on average indicates
that they had no obesity and insulin resistance issues to start with.
