On low carb snacks I see that sugar- alcohols carbs are not counted in the
net carbs. What are they and why aren't they counted ?

If I eat something with SA carbs, I count them.  It's the best possible way
to avoid getting stalled out since it is not generally known for sure
whether those types of carbs really act like carbs in the body (the claim is
that for some they do and for others they don't).  I don't like guessing
about weight loss.

Sugar alcohols are carbs, with calories etc. They are not counted
towards "net carbs" because "net carbs" has no legal meaning and
manufacturers of junk food can get away with this fraudulent
calculation.

Remember, low carb labeled junk food is still junk food.

If I remember correctly, Dr. Atkins said not to count sugar alcohols because
they do not provoke an insulin response in your body.  You do have the book,
right?

That is one of those things that is true for some, and not for others. Just
as so many things with this way of eating, it all comes down to your own
individual response to everything you eat. You just try things out and toss
what doesn't work for you and keep what does.
And not everyone is on Atkins..

It's nice to see that *somebody* gets it.

If you head on over to Google Groups and search the ASDLC archives for
"sugar alcohols," you will find the answer to your question and more -
much more.  Sugar alcohols are a topic that is discussed at length
here quite frequently.

http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/products.htm discusses the whole
"net carb" and sugar alcohol scam in some detail with pointers to scientific
write ups about how various sugar alcohols metabolize.

Short version:.  Maltitol is mostly sugar. Glycerin can be mostly sugar,
Lacitol is about half sugar, and Erythritol close to none.
