Because it is my birthday [happy birthday to me :) ], I am
marking a series of milestones in weightloss and change of WOE.

First: I've lost a total of 55 pounds, which is well past
my usual 30-pounds-and-bail process for any previous diet, so
I think I can stop worrying that I won't see this through.

Second: I've lasted for eight months on this WOE, which is
well past my usual 3-months-and-bail process, so I think
I can say that I have made a solid change.

Third: I did achieve the below-300 goal for my birthday
[although I can't recommend the process I used (being ill),
however, my worry that it would all be regained once I
got well has turned out to be unfounded, so for a one-off
I'll take it and be thankful], so I am very encouraged
about future progress.

So.  What personal milestones have you achieved recently?

April.

Happy Birthday, and congratulations on the great job you've been doing on
the weight loss!

I consider every time I break a number divisible by 10 to be a milestone.
Having 100 pounds left to lose is a milestone I should reach any day now.
I just achieved an unrelated personal milestone 2 days ago, getting MCSD
certification in C#, SqlServer, and the Microsoft .Net Framework.
I'm proud of each milestone, and something milestone-related that makes me
feel great is to pick up some heavy weight and realize that I have lost that
much fat.

I've been looking at the pound blocks of butter in the grocery
store, and fifty-five of them is a substantial amount.  :)

Best wishes for your continued success!

My first milestone was returning to normal weight.

My next milestone will be maintaining my weight for a year.

One more milestone that I will work towards is a one armed pullup.

One armed pullup?  Are those possible?  Even when I was heavy into lifting
and was doing weighted wide grip pullups, I wouldn't have done a one-armed
pullup.  You don't hang right on one arm and your back muscles/scapula are
going to be totally out of whack.  It's going to be arm strength or
nothing for that.  How about 10 widegrip pullups instead?

definitely possible....maybe not worth it....also, pullups/chinups are a
light person's exercise. I see such as an indication of ability and skill,
not necessarily good health.

Obviously, light weight helps, but Iwas able to do one-two pullups
even when I was at my fattest 223 lbs.

Yes, they are possible, but require good amount of training.

They are not easy. I am not even sure if I will ever be able to do one.

I recently tried to see how far I was from being able to do a
1AP. I stood on a scale, pulled myself up with one arm, and had my
wife look at the scale. She said it showed only 20 lbs of weight. So,
if, hypothetically, my arm was stronger by the equivalent of 20 lbs,
I could pull myself off the scale a little bit.

There are some techniques for counteracting that, apparently.

That I already can do, if by "widegrip" you mean about shoulder width
grip. I have a pullup bar in the basement, which is simply a pipe
inserted between ceiling joists.

No longer buying clothes in the "plus-size" section was a nice one for me.
Getting to 150 something was a good one too, but getting below 150 will be
even nicer.

Heh heh.  I've been looking for job interview clothing lately, so I've been
spending more (unsuccessful) time in clothing stores.  I'll be wandering around
and suddenly find myself in the plus-size section and it's always a rush to
realize that they are too big for me now and I have to make a detour to the
"regular" section :-)

Have you ever noticed that most plus-size sections are called "Women's"?  They
have Junior's, Miss's and maybe Petite's -- then WOMEN'S.  What is this, a
"bountiful Mother Earth" euphemism?  Still, I suppose it's better than labeling
the departments as Skrawny, Mature, Squat, and Fat.

I think you mean Skrawny, Dumpy, Squat, and Fat - and I need
a section for the Dumpy Squat & Fat, though I am aiming for
the Skrawny Dumpy & Squat section.   :)

You're right -- Dumpy (and/or frumpy) sounds MUCH better.

I'm with ya on the 1 armed pull-up deal.  I have the same goal.   I do
heavy weight training 5 days a week, and do regular pullups twice a
week, and every time i do my pull-ups i try a one armed one...not even
close right now but sooner or later it's gonna happen!  mark my words!
As a kid i was always big, and could never do a single pullup.  I
even went to college on a wrestling scholarship, and even then with
some pretty intense training i could't do a single one!   About 6
months ago i did my first pull-up ever! now i'm at the point where i
can do about 8 when i come down to full extension, not bad for a 250lb
guy, but i'd like to be able to do 20...  but if it's the last thing i
do i'm gonna get one of those dang one armed pull-ups!

I also have each 10 lbs as a milestone......It's cause for rejoicing.

My first major milestone was reaching 150--it was my original 'minimal' goal, but even more, fitting certain sized waistbands. I bought some things when we were in the states (mostly used) and then stored them by waistband size...(skirts specifically) I first could fit into the 32" ones, then the 31", the 30" and now the 29" and the ones that are on the "bigger 28--like 28.5". My ultimate goal is to fit into the 28" as that is what size I wore when I got married. Maybe I can get even smaller, but I was a good size when I got married and didn't feel fat. I'm within a few pounds of that now.  I'd like to wear a normal size 10 (including straight but not necessarily 'pencil' skirts).....including pants, but I'll need to lose another 15 lbs, after I reach my goal in order to do that, I think.  I'll take a look when I get another 10 lbs. off.

Happy Birthday!

For me, getting past the 3rd month was also a significant
milestone.

My first goal and milestone reached was a specific weight,
220 pounds, for personal reasons.

My second goal and milestone reached was 195 pounds by a
specific date, February 27, 2004.  It is hard for me to
explain why that specific weight, but the date was my 21st
anniversary.  Once I realized how effective this WOE was
going to be for me for weight loss, I believe that having
this specific goal is what allowed me to be successful so
far.  I don't mean for this to sound like a self-fulfilling
goal or a circular argument, just that visualizing this
allowed me to stay on track and not deviate from the program
(there is a $64 word I should use here to better describe
what I mean than self-fulfilling but, and I apologize, but I
can't recall it at the moment)

Though I still have more weight to lose, and will be working
in the gym to build up a bit of muscle mass in my upper
body, most of my goals from here on out will be purely time
based: I intend to be able to say after 1 year, 2 years, 3
years++ that I have not only lost the weight but kept it
off.

Finally, and this is a story I have repeated a couple of
times, but I cannot adequately express how powerful it has
been as a motivator.  My youngest daughter hugged me around
the waist a while back and was so excited that she could
reach all the way around me that she started bragging about
it to her friends.  This has since turned into a milestone
of its own.  We went through the stages where she could just
touch her fingertips, then curl her fingers together, then
fully grip her hands together.  Now she can' wait--her
words--to be able to use one hand to grasp the wrist of the
other arm.  We're getting close to that now...and I get lots
of hugs every day.

Congratulations April!!!
We started about the same time, I remember seeing you posting and loved your
"Put the cat out" thing! I'm so happy for you!

I have recently made it into the 270's ... I don't recall the last time I
was at this point! I've lost 54 lbs and can buy clothes at regular stores
now and coworkers are finally brave enough to mention how much better I
look!

I never ever made anything even 2 weeks before this! For the first time ever
I have hope of being a "normal" size!

I'm glad you're in this with me!

Keep up the good work!

Yes we did.  I noticed you, too.  I confess to having been
envious that you made it below the 300's before me - but I'm
all better now.    :)

My next personal milestone will be 265 - because that is the
weight I was when I met my husband.  However, buying clothes
in regular stores is a long time in the future for me - that's
okay, they're too expensive anyway (sour grapes, sour grapes).

Yes, me too.  I don't have that I-can-hardly-wait-to-get-off-
this-diet-and-have-some-REAL-food feeling as in other diets
before.  I do think people are right to say lowcarb eating
should be called a WOE rather than a diet.

Me, too & thank you & you, too!

Thank you!

I don't really have a good answer from my parents, but my
grandfather always said it was because I was named *after*
March.

Bah dah booooom!

Sorry.  :)   That tells you all you need to know about
*my* family.   :)

That's a good one.  My husband had this bumper sticker on his
ancient van when I met him:

Any day above ground is a good one.
