If you have trouble "going" to the bathroom, what do you find helps? I
don't really want to take an over the counter remedy.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Wheat germ, wheat bran. Either or both. A couple tablespoons spread on
food or just eaten. Low carb and works like a champ and is natural

Almonds, spinach, and brocolli tend to help me.

I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

I never have this problem but I do eat alot of almonds or sunflower seeds in
the day, a total of 3 apples a week, vegetables most nights, cereal or
ezekiel bread several times a week ...

I never have had a BM problem. The only time I did was when I ate
red meat (I managed to get some grass-fed, hormone-free, free-range
ground beef) and lots of hard cheeses. I eat poultry and fin/scale
fish as my protein and get LOTS of green veggies, and some almonds,
without any problem whatsoever with bm.

I grind flax and have it as a cereal ( with splenda and carb countdown milk)
each night.. Helps A lot, especially when I have had a real low fiber day..
As always YMMV and this is JMO

I grind flax and have it on a salad or make flax pancakes. Sometimes I
make flax crackers.

I use flax, also. I make a cereal with it. Put it in hamburger, meatloaf,
stews, pizza, shakes. Anything I can hide it in.

Salads, fibrous lowcarb cooked veggies, nuts, flax meal, psyllium.
Avoid too much cheese, it tends to be binding.
It is, however, normal to go somewhat less often on lowcarb, as there
is less volume of waste to be processed. The medical definition of
constipation is painful or difficult elimination, not a lack of going
daily. Normal elimination varies from 3 times a day to 3 times a
week, and "daily regularity" was a phrase made up to sell laxative.

And of course, if all else fails, you can eat one of those candy bars with
malitol. <shudder!>

I found some sugarfree taffy that puts those candy bars to shame.
Ouch. Never again. Ever. I swear, I scared the dog.

I use psyllium, an orange-flavored sugar-free generic metamucil type from
Walmart.
It doesn't matter how much fiber I get from veggies or other sources, I have
to take the psyllium or I regret it the next day.
<squeamish warning>
My problem isn't with constipation, it is with the consistency
(peanut-buttery vs non-peanut-buttery) and the effect that consistency has
on hemorrhoids. I find that without the daily psyllium the hemmies are
screaming!

Is that where the expression "getting the lead <sp> out of your a.s" came

I've not had this problem. Some people are more prone to it than others it
seems. Make sure you're drinking enough water, eating enough fats and
getting enough fiber. If it's chronic, debilitating and doesn't respond to
regular remedies then it could possibly be thyroid related.

When I am really low carb, I go 4 or 5 days without a BM. That is
always A good reminder to eat more spinach and add a little sugar-free
fiber to the diet.
Bear - 08 Mar 2004 13:59 GMT
I started taking fiber *pills* and it solved the problem for me. Because I
also take Oxycodone 3 times a day, I developed a serious problem. The
fiberous foods weren't enough. I use the Costco brand. Very inexpensive.
