What do you drink?

Peggy - 11 Mar 2004 22:10 GMT Before LC life I drank juice most of the time. Occasionally I would drink Slice, Mt Dew...or any other lemon/lime kind of pop. I liked tea too. I never drank just plain water.
Now, I can't have juice (too much sugar). Diet Pop really should be off the menu too though I do have at least one a day (usually Diet/caff. free Mt. Dew). Tea has caffeine. I do drink water, but it is so plain and I get tired of it real easy.
What can I drink? Sometimes I long for a big glass of juice...ANY kind.
Thanks in advance, Peggy

Occasionally I add to my water some stuff called RealLemon, which is concentrated lemon juice. I seem to remember making Kool Aid as a kid, and having to add your own sugar. I guess you could do that but add Splenda instead, right? I drink diet sodas about twice a week or so, they don't bother me.

I would drink a three liter a day, when they had three liters, all by myself. Hubby had some medical problems and the Dr told him to switch to Caffeine Free drinks. So now we get Caffeine Free Diet Coke. The wonder of all wonders is that I have maybe two glasses a week now. Yes, a week! If that. My mainstay in the drinks department is now flavored waters and good old filtered water from the tap. I never leave home without my flavored water and it's become an inside joke between me and my friends and family.
I never was much for fruit or fruit juice but I have noticed that I get cravings for pears or a good glass of orange juice once in a while.

I liked tea [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] >> Thanks in advance, >> Peggy Flavored waters and flavored seltzers. Coffe, tea. You could go the diet soda route. Diet Rite uses splenda, i think Fruit2O and some Arizona Iced Teas do now. ALl other will use Nutrasweet. These could be triggers for craving carbs. Even if the biology of the carb isn't there it is sweet and we can react just like when consuming sugars. (Pavlov's dog didn't need food in it's mouth to make him salivate as if it were already there)
After the first bad week--with headaches from giving up caffeine also--my desires for something else to drink reduced drastically. At first it was a BIG issue. By, i dunno, 3rd/4th week I just forgot about other drinks. I don't think about options other than water much.
Certain meals trigger habits. Breakfast makes me want orange juice or a fresh fruit mix (canteloupe/honeydew/grape/oranges/strwabery).
Anything chocolate flavored makes me want milk--which i loved and drank every day. And some mornings I would just like milk for a breakfast(no food). Now I use Hood's Carb Countdown "Milk" which is nice since I can also have some All-Bran cereal as a breakfast. Since having it in the house I do look forward to it more... a warning to me mentally.
Tropicana is coming out with Light-N-Healthy, which is 17carbs/cup. A half cup of orange juice on some mornings looks do-able.
>> 197/173/150 > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] >Caffeine Free Diet Coke. The wonder of all wonders is that I have maybe two >glasses a week now. Yes, a week! If that. That's my experience. I estimate I drank up to 1200 cals a day in glorified sugar waters. I hated diet colas because nutrasweet tastes nasty. I used induction to break any sugar or caffeine addictions. Just water. I don't like seltzer(though I've tried). No coffee or teas either. My first non-water drink was on day 28. I bought Diet Rite to try. I opened the 2 litre on Day 28 and finished it on Day 55 (4 weeks later, very flat). My brother showed up the next day and drank 3/4 of a new 2-litre that day. LOL.

Piedlourde - 12 Mar 2004 06:13 GMT Arizona Diet Green Iced Tea is made with sucralose and has VERY little caffeine. It's what I drink when I want something cold, liquid and sweet.
Otherwise, I chug water like it's a chore, and occasionally squirt some lemon or lime juice and a dash of Splenda into it. Quick lemonade, almost as easy as popping a can of diet soda and satisfies the sweet-drink urge. Or make up big pitchers of iced herbal tea (no caff) and sweeten it with something safe.
(Must get some liquid Splenda. Stupid maltodextrin.)

Crafting Mom - 11 Mar 2004 22:28 GMT My husband home roasts our own coffee beans, and I drink the resulting coffee. (For those who have never experienced such nirvana, ANY coffee you have ever drank in your life just is a different species of drink, seriously). I drink it either black or with cream (no sweetener).
Water of course.
Sometimes I drink mint, camomile, or Red Rose tea. But the coffee and water is daily. CM
Supergoof - 11 Mar 2004 23:05 GMT > What can I drink? Sometimes I long for a big glass of juice...ANY > kind. Lately I've been adding low-calorie lime concentrate to my water, which is very nice. I make it way weaker than the instructions say, otherwise it catches in my throat and tastes overpowering (I use about 1/8 instead of the 1/5 ratio they suggest).

They have no sugar; be careful not to pick up a flavored carbonated water or something called 'New York Seltzer' which has sugar. The flavor is subtle compared to fruit juice, but it's there. I like the lime and berry ones.
I exist mostly on water and wine, and maybe a cup of coffee per week.

I liked tea [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > What can I drink? Sometimes I long for a big glass of juice...ANY > kind. How long have you been on LC? I only ask because I have read that some people who start out not liking water grow to like it after a time. This may be because they are genuinely thirsty, and for some people water is really the only thing satisfying when one is thirsty. Anything flavored just makes one thirstier.
I have never had a problem drinking water - good, slightly cold water tastes absolutely fine to me, and since I've been on low-carb for a few months I have rarely wanted anything else. But occasionally I will take a glass of water, either regular or sparkling, and stir in a tiny bit of lemon juice and Splenda. It takes about a teaspoon of lemon juice and maybe a quarter packet of Splenda to turn a 12 oz. glass of water into a nice glass of lemonade.

Kalish - 12 Mar 2004 02:10 GMT >What can I drink? Sometimes I long for a big glass of juice...ANY >kind. Sugar-free TANG is pretty close to orange juice (and I never drank regular TANG). It's sweetened with aspartame, but I personally don't believe the occasional exposure to that ingredient would be disasterous.
Heather - 12 Mar 2004 05:42 GMT I used to hate the taste of water, bottled water specifically...but my tap water tastes great, and now I can drink up to 3L a day...
Along with this, coffee with cinnamon (on the grinds in the machine, this is so good) and caffiene free diet coke once in a while...
I n Canada the only pop we've got with Splenda is orange and pink Crush....which gets old quick...it's alright mixed with vanilla low carb shakes though...:)

For an aperitif, I drink 1 martini. with Vodka, again < 1 gram carbs.
The Atkins way of thinking is that alcohol assimilates much like carbos. I have not found this to be the case. Went from 168 to 140 and have kept t the weight off even during the holidays.

nah,, seriously. something I tried once (till I got lazy) was squeezing fresh limes, oranges, lemons or grapefruit and mixxing just enough juice with a glass of soda water to get the taste. it worked for me with nil effect.
yes, tea does have tannins and caffeine but I suspect no where near what coffee has of same. 1 sm. cup of coffee per day maybe,, and as much tea as I need - usually around 2.5 pints - and I am set.

jpatti - 27 Mar 2004 14:28 GMT I mostly drink coffee and water. Sometimes Crystal Light or diet soda, but mostly coffee and water.
Sometimes breakfast is a protein powder shake, thus drinkable, but that's more in the "food" category than the "beverage" category for me.
An occassional treat... diet root beer over ice with a splash of heavy cream - it tastes like a root beer float. Similar thing done with diet orange soda tastes like a creamsicle. These are more "desserts" than beverages though.
Damsel in dis Dress - 27 Mar 2004 20:13 GMT Oceans of water, flavored with a little vanilla (my urine has practically no color at all)
One can of diet soda per day.
If I'm thirsty for milk, I'll take a glug (about a tablespoon) of heavy cream, just for the flavor.
I plan on introducing Carb Countdown dairy beverage soon. If choosing betwen low-carb bread and low-carb milk, I'll take the milk any day. And it's much lower in carbs than the bread, to boot!
That's about it, unless you count the occasional Atkins or Keto shake (the powdered variety for breakfast.

Now I drink Fruit 2O, Crystal Light (not a lot of that because of the Aspartame; the bottles are actually made with Splenda, but I don't like the bottled stuff so much), Light Ocean Spray beverages (which are still pretty high-carb, so I will usually dilute them, the amount varying depending on how many g of carbs I can afford), and Fruit Refreshers (I love the cranberry one, but they are made with Aspartame, alas). I loved the Ice Botanicals, but they seem to have disappeared (some contain tea, so beware). MinuteMaid is venturing into the lowER-carb realm, but is still to high for me. I have just seen their Light & Healthy Orange Juice (or is it Orange Beverage) but have heard of some lime drink too, which would imply they also have lemonade. Since I would have to dilute the OJ (etc.?) A LOT, and it only comes in half gallons, I would end up throwing out most of it, so I have not tried it.

Fruit juice is quite carby! I should know, since I used to drink A LOT of it. Now I sometimes have maybe a quarter of a cup of real cranberry juice diluted with something that is zero carbs. As for, say, citrus fruits, it is better to eat some of the fruit than it is to juice it. For one thing, you need a lot of fruit to make a decent amount of juice--much more than one would normally eat.
