Why No Iron supplements?

Greetings Group,

Second time Lo-Carber here. First tried Lo-Carbing 5 years ago.  Fell
off the wagon.  : -(

Having much more success with it this time now that both I and DD have
changed over to the Lo-Carb WOE.

I've read Dr. Atkins' book and articles on the Atkins site and I've
noticed that while certain supplements are suggested/recommended, he
always cautioned against taking vitamins that contain Iron and Iron
supplements.

I have Sickle Cell trait which brings my blood iron down to extremely
low levels and have taken Iron supplements in the form of Ferrous
Fumurate for years.

Initially thought that perhaps Dr. Atkins stated 'no iron' because of
all the additional protein that was allowed in Lo-Carbing, so I tried
to go without the iron supplements for a week, but was totally wasted
and weakened.  Right now, I'm trying to go one day with a Iron pill
and one day without, and that seems to be working okay for me.

But I'd still like to know the reasoning behind the 'no iron' rule.
Can someone tell me why supplemental iron isn't allowed?

TIA,

Teri G.

I don't know, but it's likely related to the theory that iron in the blood
causes heart disease (a reason people theorize that men have more heart
disease than women).

According to the atkins center, you don't need to give your body more iron
because your getting enough of it with the foods you eat on the induction
list, as well as as you move thru the other stages of atkins.  I went to GNC
to get my vitamins.

I think I had read somewhere that it's because excessive iron can cause
constipation, which is already an issue for some low-carbers.

All of the advice you got was valid for someone that doesn't have low Iron.

If you have normal iron levels and combine the additional meat from the diet
with even more Iron it could cause serious problems. However, since you
stated that you have a condition that causes you to have low Iron to begin
with you should probably continue taking the suppliments. You might start
off with a lower dose and work your way up slowly only if you feel it is
necessary.

I am not a doctor, though. You should run this by a doctor. You might also
have him test your Iron levels regularly (although he probably is already
doing that) to make sure your not getting too much. Given your medical
condition, though, and the fact that going a week without suppliments left
you wiped out, that shouln't be a problem. You should still run it by a
doctor though. It's probably the type of question he would answer over the
phone without an office visit.

Teri,

There's accumulating evidence that associates high iron levels (specifically
ferritin) with the development of diabetes.  But you have something more
important to worry about and you should most definitely NOT make changes in
your diet which help the sickle cell based on reading a mass market book
with very poorly explained science behind it.

That is not to say that there is not good science behind low carbing, but it
isn't in the Atkins book.

But if your iron is low, diabetes from iron is not going to be a concern.

Normal people hoard iron within their bodies and it can easily build
up faster than is healthy.

So you're not normal and the normal reasons don't apply to you.

Building on this a bit because I didn't suggest a conclusion:

The advice to avoid iron supplements is for people with a normal iron
metabolism.  Since you don't have a normal iron metabolism that advice
does not apply to you, so ignore it.  Continue your usual iron
supplementation program from before.

Maybe because atkins doesn't sell them?
