Well, I complained vociferously yesterday about having had a
cruddy week and said I needed to do something about it.
This morning my wife and I packed up the family and drove
about an hour north to hike up around Amicalola Falls and
one of the Appalachian trail access points in North Georgia.
I'm not sure exactly how far we ended up walking but I do
know that one section was 1.5 miles up with a 1000 foot rise
in elevation, then back down again so we probably walked
double that distance...maybe 6 miles. The terrain for this
hike made for a bit more strenuous walking than I am
accustomed to but we were all able to do this without
issue...a sure sign of progress. My heart rate never got
above about 90 even at the steepest parts of the walk...6
months ago this would have put me on a stretcher.
When we got back down to the parking area the kids wanted to
play for a bit in the playground so, while watching them and
having a moment of personal madness, I walked over to a
chin-up bar and did three chin-ups. I haven't been able to
do a single chin-up in 15 years, much less three. More
progress!
So, I still had a cruddy week, but at least I feel good
about myself again.

Glad to hear you were able to have such a nice time with your family, not to
mention being physically up to it -- and THEN some! Sounds like you have some
MORE steam to let off, though. Maybe you should consider buying some time in a
batting cage :-)

Hmmm, I don't know about a batting cage. I was anxious to
see how my left elbow felt this morning after the
chin-ups...so far there is no pain so this is a good thing.
From your tagline it looks like you are down 3 more pounds
already this month. Way to go.

That's fantastic! I find walking outdoors to be a real rejuvenator.
This morning Dog and I saw a redwing blackbird (sure sign of spring in
these cold parts), a couple of robins, several woodpeckers, and
squirrel season is full-tilt on. Happy Dog.

I love this time of year. I prefer fishing over hunting
but, either way, it's looking good. We didn't see or hear
nearly as many songbirds as I expected, but there were a
couple of falcons in the area so that might explain it. We
are seeing a number of finches, woodpeckers and a couple
cardinals in our yard on a regular basis. The squirrels are
out in force.
Did I mention that I love this time of year? Have a
marvelous day.

JJ,
That sounds like such a beautiful place to hike! Northern Georgia is
gorgeous. I've seen pictures of Amicalola Falls, it is definitely a place
I'd like to visit. Did you take any pictures while there?
Going on hikes is one of the things I just love.
As overweight as I am now, I don't try the REALLY long or hard hikes, but
usually go for a 1.5 hour hike every other day (weather permitting). I live
in wooded hills near Denver, it is an area known as the "Black Forest".
There are hiking trails all over the place, so I am lucky to live in a place
that makes nature hikes so easy. There is also a state park 10 miles from
my home that I hike at often, pictures of it are here:

When I get down to goal I plan to start tackling the 14ers in Colorado.
Hiking and mountain climbing are so much fun!
