I've been of and on atkins (last year i lost a lot of weight, but put some back on so i'm going back on it... tomorrow!). My old man has recently started the diet, 'cos he's always been overweight (runs in the family) and he kept hearing about atkins on the TV so i lent him the book, and today he tells me "it's strange, for a while nothing happened, then i lost 4 kilos in a week". I had to explain that they call this a "whoosh". He's quite pleased about it, so i've decided to get back on it now my birthday's over and springtime's on its way! I have a question before i start hoarding up on meat, eggs and cheese: does anyone find it helps to keep a journal of what you've eaten, what you'll eat and what exercise you do? Is there any software designed for this, a bit like Microsoft Money only with food? ;-)

I guess the parts of the book(like phases 3 & 4) that talk about Atkins as a way of life and not a short bus ride to get on and off of didn't connect with you. If you don't learn to permanently adjust your eating to your body you will just gain weight back--sometimes very quickly and often get even heavier than when you started. Is there any software designed for this, a bit > like Microsoft Money only with food? ;-) Yes, I started out using Fitday.com, but found it tedious and it didn't some things I wanted, so I made my own Excel workbook. I still use Fitday, however, to gather the info I need. I have several worksheets in the workbook: Summary, Foods, Monthly Diary, Recipes, Stats, Exercise, and a monthly blank to start a new month with. The main page is each month (Mar04 at the moment). I record the basic info you find on food labels -- I used to include more, but decided I didn't need ALL the info, so now I track calories/fat/saturated fat/cholesterol/sodium/potassium/carbs/fiber/protein. That's the order you'll find on US food labels (except potassium, which is kind of hit & miss). The first numbers column is for carbs minus fiber. I gradually built up a worksheet for Foods and their accompanying nutritional info for various weights & measures, either from their labels or from Fitday. As each month ends, I move the Month page to a separate workbook where I archive the Diaries and start a new one. I've referenced the 2003 & 2004 archived diaries many times, usually when a question comes up here.
I find that keeping the diary (something I had NEVER done in 33 years of on-off dieting) makes a TREMENDOUS difference! I KNOW what's going into my body now. I know if I need to eat more or less protein, fat or just plain calories for the day (that doesn't necessarily mean I'll DO it, but at least I'm AWARE of it). I also note "fiber" and "fat" in my daily food log as part of the template to remind me that I need to either eat or take fiber and to take my vitamins. Once I do, I remove those reminders for the day.
My summary page is linked to the daily totals and it is very helpful to spot trends based on carbs and/or calories. The Stats page tracks my weight, total weight loss, and occasional measurements. I used to make a chart from it (just for the hell of it), but it bored me, so I stopped charting it (although I could easily make one at any time based on the gathered stats). On the Stats and Summary worksheets I color code days for PMS and periods, which has been VERY useful in spotting and keeping track of hormonal trends.
By making my own spreadsheets, I have control over the info I want to have and VERY good control over how I calculate things. I can easily link info among the different worksheets. For instance, the recipe page might have a list of ingredients for a meat sauce (not directions, just all the ingredients and their nutritional info). In the same worksheet, I'll have a recipe for Eggplant Lasagna, neatly linking the info for the meat sauce. On the Month worksheet, I can then easily link to the serving size line for the lasagna on the Recipe worksheet. Or maybe I'll make a HUGE pot of Turkey Vegetable Soup, most of which goes into the freezer. Two months later, I still have the serving size info on the soup and I also have a reminder of what went into it the last go-around. I always include the date of the most recent batch of whatever, especially if I have more than one version of it.
It took me a while to fine-tune the workbook and build up a database of foods, but at 9 months into it, I'm quite satisfied with it. I could get one of the programs offered here or commercially, but this way I get exactly the info *I* want.
About the only fudging I do with it is where Fitday and/or the USDA nutritional database doesn't break down into the quantity type I prefer. For instance, if a veggie is listed only in terms of cups (despite the fact that it does not easily FIT into a cup and doesn't specify whether it's mashed or loosely packed), but I want to measure it in ounces, I might start off measuring it by the cup or piece, but then weigh it to determine how many ounces go into that cup. THEN I have my OWN quantity-specific info to work with, which may or may not be accurate, but neither is measuring it by the cup if it doesn't easily fit.

DigitalVinyl - 14 Mar 2004 23:58 GMT Saffire, I've done the same thing in Excel. Being a big geek and using spreadsheet in so many different ways over the year this was normal. I create a sheet for each day, building meals and portions from a lookup database sheet. I also put notes of unusual activity levels. It sums everything and the totals come over to a daily sheet. Mine automatically graphs changes in weight loss vs calories--no discernable coorelation! Weight over time, weight loss vs. carbs. I also do a bunch of coorelation tests and various avrages and trending--I'm a numbers geek. I totally understand about having it exactly the way you want. I've thought about switching over to fitday, but this has become so easy. I started with the Atkins db and have increased to about 600 items. I downloaded the entire SR-16 (USDA-what Fitday uses). I haven't converted it yet, but I'm looking at doing that and adding it into my food db. Eventually I'll archive the daily sheets off so the spreadsheet stays a manageable size.

Great minds think alike :-) I'm just finishing up converting 425 CD's to mp3s (wait, I didn't do the classical stuff, so make that about 415 CDs). Actually, I HAVE converted them all, I'm just fine-tuning organization and ID3 tags now. Once that geek-bulb goes off over your head, there's really no stopping until you get it the way you want it :-)

I converted my CD collection(~475) this past year and I'm more than 60% done with all my vinyl (45s, 12" & LPs). I also obsessively tag music. I have everything in proper folders(over 54 GBs now) with a thumbnail of each cover in each album folder. I use I-Tunes now, I don't let it reorganize the folders(an option you have to uncheck before you use it), just let it build a db, ratings, playcounts. Really a well done product. WinAMP 5 is also very good and similar capability. There are a few 45s from my first vinyl conversions that I need to redo. The software I used to convert wasn't very good back then. I also instituted a backup strategy, complete with an offsite copy. I've got 13 years of professsional, personal, and valuale info on this PC.

It didn't occur to me to scan the covers -- oh great, now THAT idea's going to stew until I HAVE to do it :-) The LPs (about 300) are still in the garage and I haven't touched them since about 1988. Hmmmmm ....

I didn't scan the CD covers, just the LP ones so far. I grabbed the cd covers off the internet from shopping sites and only scanned a few that I couldn't find.
For LPs, if you have a digital camera, use a tripod and setup an easel/slanted table so that the camera can photograph it headon (little perspective distortion). put the LP cover on it and play with lighting in the room. Flash is bad usually because the covers reflect back. With that setup I phtographed two to three dozen LPs & liner notes before my memory card would fill up. I'd dump them to the PC and repeat. Then I just cropped the scans and on covers usually reduced resolution (I have a 5MP camera). It went much faster than I expected.
