Gas/Diarrhea and LC Ice creams?

MP - 15 Mar 2004 19:51 GMT Has anyone been having problems with gas and diarrhea with LC ice cream? Since eating more than my fair share of Breyer's LC mint chip I have been having a lot of belly grumbling (more like bubbling) and diarrhea. The gas part comes while the diarrhea is taking place. (I really hope no one is eating :). I haven't had any for a few days but them I have been sick with strep so I cant tell if something else is going on or if the antibiotics are perpetuating things. I am going to take some probiotics and hopefully things will clear but was curious to know if LC ice cream has some of the problems as the LC candies.

The problem is the sugar alcohols (look for words ending in 'tol' on the ingredient list)
So, unless you want to stink up the place, quit eating so much of it. :) It will also wreck weight loss if you eat too much.

Here's what roger is refering to:
Breyers LC Ice Cream
INGREDIENTS: Milk, Cream, Polydextrose, ****Sorbitol****, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Cocoa (Processed with Alkali) Glycerine, Mono and Diglycerides, Cellulose Gel, Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carob Bean Gum, Malt Powder, Salt, Polysorbate 80, Sucralose (Splenda Brand), Acesulfame Potassium.
I know the box says net 4g but it is really 7g. 10g-3g(fiber). Sorbitol is ingested and breaks down into glucose just like other carbs, just 2.6 calories per gram instead of 4 calories per gram. I know some people say it doesn't affect their carb count/weight loss, but I've yet to find a medical/nutritional page that claims that sugar alcohols are undigestable just like fiber. You do digest them, glucose is released from them just like all the other non-fiber carbs.

MP - 15 Mar 2004 20:28 GMT Upon reading your post I checked the ice cream container and there it read, sorbitol. Then, of course, I look up on the net and sorbitol is used as a laxative. I guess it certainly could be the cause of my issues. Might have to cut down on those portions if I find it to be the problem.

MP - 15 Mar 2004 21:23 GMT TY Roger. I did do a search and couldn't find any posts about my symptoms atleast. When I started the diet we didn't have these *low carb* options so I didn't have to worry about reading labels, everything came from the produce, meat and dairy dept. If you wanted low carb items you had to order them off the net whereas now they are readily available at the store. My excitement came with these new products when they introduced the ice creams. Now I realize that I have to be careful with it and see if the ice cream is infact the problem. I have been eating these ice cream steadily for about a month but I was also put on a new arthritis drug (but been on it before with no problems) about the same time.
Right now I am maintaining and luckily the ice cream doesn't stall weight loss nor does it increase the gain.
TY again for you input :)

Angle Subsided - 16 Mar 2004 05:48 GMT yep, I had some serious swamp-a.s after eating a few pieces of Russell Stover Candy and a small 3 ounce bowl of Breyer's Ice Cream. It's still worth it to have sweet things again. We just have to make sure not to have too much. Since I keep my carbs around 25 per day, I don't mind having 10 from swampass making sorbitol and malitol

Not necessarily, if the variety of sugar alcohol in the LC chocolate is not the same as that in the ice cream. For instance, lactitol will give me severe GI distress, while maltitol doesn't have that effect on me at all (it _does_ raise my blood sugar, though).

I wonder if "too much" maltitol would do that to me, and if so, how much would be "too much". A while back I was experimenting with sugar-alcohol-laden products to see how various ones affected me (the experiments involved 15-minute BG tests for several hours). My sample sizes contained 10 g each of a given type of sugar alcohol or glycerine; I'm not sure if I've ever had more than that at a time. At that dose, the lactitol gave me severe cramps that lasted half a day. The maltitol didn't have any GI effects on me, but they did raise by BG levels -- not quite as high as 10 g of regular sugar, but it stayed higher longer than with real sugar, so the area under the curve was about the same. (True to its hype, erythritol was the best for me -- no BG rise, no GI issues.)
SA's appear to be something that affects individuals quite differently, though.

Jenny - 15 Mar 2004 22:42 GMT Shandi,
I had to stop eating the Breyer's Carb Smart after they reformulated it this winter, for exactly that reason. Horrible gas every time I ate it.
The Silhouette Skinny Carb bars do NOT cause gas. (They're the people that make Skinny Cow low fat stuff) Stop & Shop just started carrying them this past week.

It's super easy, especially if you have one of those little Cuisinart ice cream makers with the bowls that you freeze in the freezer..
Basic Vanilla: 1.5 cup milk 1.5 cup cream 0.5 cup Splenda 1.0 tbsp Vanilla pinch of salt 1.0 tbsp of vegetable glycerine (add a little more to make ice cream "softer")
Mix it up and toss it in the Cuisinart ice cream maker.. and you'll have ice cream in about 30 minutes. No funky chemicals and/or gastrointestinal distress. Makes about 6 .5 cup servings.
Use the basic vanilla and add other stuff for variations:
butter pecan: melt 1 stick butter in skillet, add pinch of salt, chop 1 cup pecans and add to butter. cook over low heat until butter stops "foaming". drain off butter and let cool. add to ice cream mixture before putting in ice cream maker. The "pecan butter" is tasty on low carb pancakes! :9
creamsicle: add orange extract to taste.. :)
add various extracts: lemon, mint, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks.

The gas That's what happens if you eat more than your fair share. Sugar alcohols will do that. If you can't control your portions, don't buy sugarfree ice cream.

If you can teach yourself to accept tiny portions and take satisfaction in that--seems like good training for the rest of your life.
I don't know about "negligible" though. Depends upon your carb limits some. If i grabbed a pint of Hagen-daas Chocolate, 21g net per 1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons, or 2.625 carbs per tablespoon. A hollow scoop of a teaspoon can easily grab a tablespoon, or almost 2.6 carbs. 5.2 carbs in your serving. It is a dangerous thing to estimate since most people think the teaspoon and tablespoon from their tableware sets are heaping measures. Depending upon brand they ranged from 15 to 31 net carb per 1/2 cup, So a tbsp would range from 2 to 4g per. Again, if you measure of a tsp/tbsp is good and a little is all you need, I think this is a valid way to train yourself for the long run.

Surely eating a small spoon of regular ice cream beats pigging out on LC ice cream, thinking that you are doing great on your diet.
