Been On Atkins for approx. 4 months. Have lost 30 pounds and feel
great. Noticed, however, darkness in urine when I get dehydrated. Went
to Doctor for check up and urine test revealed "moderate" amount of
blood in urine. Checked prostate and said it was fine. Has ordered
test for Kidney stones. No other symptoms. I have read about possible
side effects on kidneys while on Atkins and wondered if anyone else
had experienced these same symptoms?

Are you on a statin drug?  Is it possible that you have an infection or a
stone?

You could have a small stone moving inside your kidney. There're so many
tiny capillaries, it's cutting a few but will remain painless until it
passes into the ureter. A quick and inexpensive x-ray will show if it's a
stone and I highly recommend knowing. The other alternative is bladder
problems. They can look inside your bladder (cystoscopy)  and see if the
blood is coming from there. It's a simple procedure that takes about 5
minutes (excluding prep time) in the doctor's office.

I was tested for gallstones last year.
I was told at the time that xrays do not show the majority of stones.
They used ultrasound to detect the stones.  It was pretty neat; as they
moved the ultrasound "wand" over my guts I was able to see it all on the
screen.

There can be a lot reasons for this. I would, however, quit atkins
until you find out for sure what the problem is. A lc diet, with it's
increase in protein will not *cause* kidney problems, but will
exacerbate any pre-existing ones. Did you check with your doc before
starting atkins, or any new diet fot that matter?

As one who just went through a kidney CAT scan and a bladder exam within the
last two weeks I can agree that both are very simple and painless
procedures, each one about 5 minutes tops - and well worth it for peace of
mind to help rule things out.
