Anheuser-Busch strikes back against low-carb diet books

The error of their ways -
Anheuser-Busch Cos. is worried that low-carb diet books wrongly
dissuade people from drinking beer. In a new brochure, the brewer
counters what it says are the three most common "errors."

Low-carb diet books say -
Beer is high in sugar, particularly maltose.
Beer has a high glycemic index, and foods with high glycemic indexes
are not appropriate for low-carb diets.
Drinking beer will give you a beer belly.

A-B says -
During fermentation, yeast consumes the maltose, converting it into
alcohol.
Beer contains too few carbs to be tested for glycemic index. For
example, a person would have to drink more than seven Bud Lights in 15
minutes to consume the 50 grams necessary to measure the resulting
blood sugar. (hahaha-not!)

Consuming too many calories - and a genetic predisposition - are to
blame for a large gut.

From reading this you would think alcohol is calorie-free!

Alcolol has higer energy density than fat. It metabolises into acetaldehyde
then ketone bodies instead of glucose. So of course it is low GI, but high
in calories.

The same sort of consumer duping goes into advertising vegetable oil as
"cholesterol free". Vegetables don't contain cholerterol, but some contain
other types of fats.

I thought alcohol was 5 kcals per gram while fat is 9 kcals per gram?

alcohol is 7, fat is 9.

I think that the OP meant that alcohol had more energy per gram than
carbs.

Well, that much is true but he said fat which is 9 kcals per gram and
definitely more dense than alcohol.

yes, but why would anyone in their right mind want to drink bud light?

Bud Light is the #1-selling beer in the U.S.---not the #1-selling light
beer---the #1-selling beer, period. Go back to your sulphite-ridden wine.

yeah, that proves ... what?  that people are sheep.

bud light is crap.  just because lots of people drink it doesn't mean
that it's not crap.

Really.  And bad flavored water at that.  There are good, real beers available
if you're going to drink beer.  I don't see the point in poisoning the taste
buds, whether you're low-carbing or not.

I think all beer tastes like crap.  Does that mean I'm right?

I'd be willing to bet (too lazy to look it up) that McDonald's is the
#1-selling resturant in the US.  Doesn't make their food good though.

Wonderful. Must have missed me on ESPN2 and Fox News 2 weeks ago. Of course,
I don't post anything about the book anymore on this ng since it's populated
with some of the most bitter and unrelentingly opinionated group of people
I've ever run across.

I'd rather court the majority of LC dieters, through TV and radio
interviews, who understand the concept of the book rather than beat my head
against the wall with those who like to spend their days eating too many
Russell Stover chocolates and posting sarcastic comments.

Let the flaming begin...

I'm sorry I missed you. I don't watch much tv these days, but if I'd known
I'd have set the vcr.

Maybe just in hint tucked into a .sig file?

I thought that was what you *liked* about us.

I'll cop to the sarcasm but I haven't had a RS chocolate in I don't know
how long, could you tell me?

You'll need to pile up more wood, then.

LOL you must be talking about me.

Advertising is prohibited on this ng, but you knew that already.  You
just feel the rules shouldn't apply to you.  Jerk.  A person comes here
for support and answers, not to be marketed at.

> I'd rather court the majority of LC dieters,

Yeah, the idiots who think you *have* to do the shakes and bars to do
lowcarb. Oooo, I feel so *cut*.

Ah that would be the 'I get to keep guzzling beer diet!'   What's that
you say?  I'm not applying any common sense?  Well neither do your
so-called majority of lowcarbers.
How's that different than your miss-portrayal of ng participants having
too many Russel Stovers again?

rather than beat

You mean we don't just roll over and beg you to use us good and hard?
Aww, so sad for you that we are such a hard sell.  Bitter much?

How's that different than all those beer fiends who can't abide cutting
back on their beloved grain drink to get healthy?

> Let the flaming begin...

I think you started without us.  This is merely a rebuttal.  I'm sure ng
participants can look up the whole sordid history in google.

Only in your mind.  But then again, it gets sprained when it tries to

I don't think I have ever seen whole ones. I use the sliced ones with
broccoli. I can see DH rolling his eyes when I send him in search of
something else in the veggie department.

4 water chestnuts have 3.444 grams of carbs.

Indeed, you are correct.

http://money.cnn.com/2004/03/05/news/companies/mcdonalds.reut/

"Bud Light--the McDonald's of beer."

My favorite comment ever on American light beer (the beer in question
was Bud, Miller, or Michelob--can't remember which) was made by an
English friend of mine years ago.

The barmaid brought him a mug of light beer while his attention was
elsewhere.  When he turned back to his glass, he took a sip, looked at
it quizzically, and said, "Seems like I've drunk this once already!"
